Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

I was going to suggest looking on TSR. Are there many options available on Extra?

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 12/03/2023 15:27

@ Aurea Thank you! I empathise; it’s been nail-biting. I’m also really not sure if Scottish unis will find ds’s application awkward as he’s Scottish but at a school in England doing A Levels. Oh well, we’ll soon see.

@Buttermilk72 So sorry for the stress this must be causing your son. I have been telling my ds (predicted 4 x A stars at A Level and same in EPQ) that it’s just numbers. Ds was rejected after interview by Cambridge. We know of lots of similar applicants not getting in to great courses. The Imperial student room thread is an eye opener. Every candidate being rejected (usually not even with an interview) sounds like an absolute star 🤷🏽‍♀️ Lots of the applicants couldn’t have done anything more. Fingers crossed for you and your ds.

Buttermilk72 · 12/03/2023 15:35

@Tree543 unless you have no offers or reject all the remaining ones, you can’t see what’s on UCAS Extra. My son contacted Bath university who said they have some Maths/economics courses available but he would have to go through Extra, which isn’t a surprise. Problem is it still does mean you would get a place… they just have some available… at the moment

Buttermilk72 · 12/03/2023 15:41

@FriendlyLaundryMonster My son decided not to apply for Oxford again this year.. he didn’t get an interview despite getting marks in the HAT and TSA that would have done in previous years…

I thought you could search if you filter the 'courses by vacancies.' I'm not sure whether what is on Ucas is available in real time i guess you would need to go direct to the Unis. It does seem a big gamble to withdraw from the remaining applications in case there is nothing suitable on Extra.

KittyMcKitty · 12/03/2023 16:02

Just my opinion but I would not withdraw from those he hasn’t heard from. Economics is very competitive and those courses in Extra May essentially just be fishing to see if they can get better applicants then those they have on hold.

Did he get any feedback from those who rejected him? If not it may be useful to ask for feedback from this years rejections in case it’s a problem with the PS or something?

I hope he gets an offer soon.

OP posts:
Buttermilk72 · 12/03/2023 16:14

@KittyMcKitty feedback was that he wasn’t as competitive as other applicants. His head of sixth form rang Bristol to try and get further feedback and that it was a very competitive course said a lot of applicants had a set of full 9’s at GCSE to go with the 4 A stars. My son got 9888888887 at GCSE, which is again difficult as they didn’t actually sit them..

KittyMcKitty · 12/03/2023 16:22

im sorry that’s really tough and you would hope his achieved a level grades would trump those with predicted. Sadly for the uni’s he’s applied for many applicants will have higher gcse grades. Bristol do use GCSEs in their ranking. I have a dc at Manchester and I think they look at GCSEs but to a lesser extent. My dd is fortunate to have an offer from Durham (v different subject) and was told they didn’t take GCSEs into account.

Unfortunately this years applicant pool is going to look very similar to last years. I would be inclined to hold out to hear from Manchester - they are unlikely to make you wait as long as LSE and Durham and depending on whether they offer take a view on it then. Would he consider Uni’s which are lower ranked as it’s a tough list he applied for this year and last!

My son only has one offer, from his insurance choice. Waiting to hear from Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol and Exeter for A&F.

Has found it particularly frustrating that 2 of those are offering the course in Extra - he enquired with Admissions about it and was told they were looking for more international applicants.

Hopefully, will get offers soon but if does have to go through this again I think he'd be dropping 2 of those above for 2 slightly less popular/faster to respond.

WendyWebersdrugget · 12/03/2023 16:50

It’s definitely tougher now than when my eldest applied. I’m so sorry for your DS @Buttermilk72 it must be so stressful for him and you. DS2 currently has two offers but one is not in the subject he applied for and he is on hold for Bristol (suspect it’s a no). One rejection already in. However, he has got an offer he really wants and is fine if that’s the only one.

Buttermilk72 · 12/03/2023 17:00

@WendyWebersdrugget My other son (DS2.. is that second son?) who has also applied this year as they are only 18 months apart was on hold at Bristol for mechanical engineering but last week they said they couldn’t give him a place on that course but gave him a list of others he could apply to and he subsequently got an offer for the alternative course.. so they offers are still coming. As long as your son has one offer… and one he is happy with, that’s great news 😀

WendyWebersdrugget · 12/03/2023 17:28

Yes, we’re not complaining! I’ll be interested to see if Bristol suggests something different but he’s likely to stick with Southampton I think.

DS got a rejection from UCL tonight for Economics. He now has 3 rejections, feel so bad for him. His one offer is from Newcastle and still waiting on Leeds. There seems to be some good courses at Bath on UCAS extra. Does anyone have any experience of the process?

lovefizzycolabottles · 13/03/2023 21:02

@cmcc22 gosh really sorry about UCL economics. Lots of rejections on TSR for people with brilliant grades. DD still waiting to hear. Hope someone can advise on Bath and Extra.

Thanks. Yip. He is one of those with great grades. He is in the middle of mock exams and it's done nothing for his motivation or confidence. Hoping there might be another route for him

@cmcc22 - if he hasn't done so already, it's worth looking at the courses directly, on the 2023 pages, not 2024, on Bath's website.

My DS looked at a couple of Extra courses listed for Durham on UCAS and found they were only open to EU and International applicants.

Unfortunately UCAS extra is only for people with no offers. If you're holding an offer you're simply not eligible to apply.

Newcastle is a great university though. Its the first choice of most of the kids at my DS's selective independent school due to the good mix of academic regard and social scene.

WendyWebersdrugget · 14/03/2023 07:34

@cmcc22 really sorry to hear this - not expecting a UCL offer here, either but it’s such a shame when your DS has such great predicted grades and wanted that course. Definitely worth checking what else is available. Good luck!

bguthb90 · 14/03/2023 07:50

@Era - you probably know this already, but you can apply via Extra if you decline any offers/withdraw from any outstanding applications.

Yes sorry, I assumed the poster's DC wasn't going to withdraw from a RG offer on the off chance that they might get a better offer through Extra.

A quick skim through though shows there are still higher ranked places accepting applications through Extra, notably Lancaster, Loughborough and Birmingham.

NotDonna · 14/03/2023 08:38

Sorry to hear about UCL and your DS @cmcc22 - would he risk withdrawing from Leeds and Newcastle and doing extra? He’s still in with a good chance at Leeds but if he’s really not keen on either then…

NotDonna · 14/03/2023 08:41

@era genuine question… are all three, Lancaster, Loughborough, Birmingham higher ranked for economics than Newcastle and Leeds?

NotDonna · 14/03/2023 08:49

@bguthb90 has your DS applied for the apprenticeships with the Big4? Or smaller firms like Grant Thornton, Mazars etc., Or the investment banks, like JP Morgan? He may be too late but some have a rolling application process.

All three are ranked more highly for economics than Newcastle in most of the lists and more highly than both Newcastle and Leeds in the general rankings lists too.

Leeds is ranked more highly than Newcastle for economics. Newcastle sits towards the very bottom of the Russell Group universities.

Thanks. He's going to try and contact Bath admissions and see if they would give him a verbal offer before withdrawing. Based on past history Leeds could take another few weeks to offer. He's really not keen on Newcastle. So based on a conversation with admissions we will weigh it up
