Good to catch up on everyone's news. Good luck to your dd @sammyjoanne and congrats to those with results! Ds came home for 24 hours to bring back some stuff from his flat. He's gone back for extrav and last few days of partying before home on Thursday and we head off on a family holiday. The year has flown by! He's not mentioned exam results or anything, I'm not sure when they come out for second years. I'm presuming with the marking boycott the third year exams etc take priority.

sammyjoanne · 27/06/2023 17:46

Hi update on Lancaster gradiing in physics. Shes had a meeting with the head of dept and shes not going to know classification until 'late' summer. How lates late I have absolutely no idea, but she will get her results for 5 out of the 9 exams 13th of July.
She said if shes got like 50's in the 5 results shes getting 13th July, then she knows shes not getting in 4th year and going to either take a year out and go for an MSC at manchester or royal holloway which takes in 2:2 (theres some others but these have the better particle course).
Or if shes got like 60's 70's then shes she is going to sit tight and wait for her other results, which she knows shes done quite well on at least 3 of them thats boycotted. So will sit tight and will see.

Crossing fingers @sammyjoanne .

My dd missed her Mbio cut of by less than 1 percent even though her combined Yr1 and 2 gave her 62.5 percent.

It looks like she gets all her results next week...hope its enough to continue with planned Masters ...she worked so hard last Yr and has completely turned herself around from the anxious/depressed state she was in at the start of yr3....no matter what im proud of her but would be nice to have some certainty.

Hope your DS enjoys his last few days too @specialted .

QuintanaRoo · 27/06/2023 21:17

Dd has got her last mark back and is gutted. She was on track for a 1st. Grade is 55% which takes her down to a 2:1. She was hoping to go to Cambridge for her Masters but this is now unlikely.

there were major issues on the course as they literally forgot to teach two modules in year 3. They didn’t realise until Dd asked what was going on. Then had to cram a terms worth of teaching for two modules into about 7 weeks….when they were meant to be concentrating on their final project.

dd spearheaded a big official complaint and named one lecturer in particular. Got the SU involved, had a meeting with the deputy pro vice chancellor .

it’s this lecturer who has marked her final piece of work. She has an email from another lecturer saying her last piece of work is worth at least 70% but saying there’s nothing she can do as it’s not her module and she can’t mark it. Dd is devastated. She really feels this lecturer has victimised her ruined her life. But the university general policy is that you can’t appeal a grade. The lecturer has got a colleague who is his mate to second mark it. So he’s covered all bases. If it wasn’t for this email from the other lecturer I’d barely believe it,

Daisysway · 27/06/2023 21:37

@QuintanaRoo.....that's awful ...i learned early on in education not to bark because it always seems to backfire (even when barking is the right thing to do ). Im amazed at how one module can really blow the overall marks....

Im sure Cambridge would still consider a 2:1...especially if module marks are all high except 1.

We live near to Cambridge and im hoping my dd will eventually work at one of the Cambridge Biomed companies.

QuintanaRoo · 28/06/2023 06:39

Cambridge say they’ll only consider high 2:1 and it looks like this grade will drag her down to 64%

Daisysway · 28/06/2023 07:22

I was shocked last year when just one exam pulled my dds grade down despite the remaining exams being good...

Can she put a submission into Cambridge detailing the issues with the modules that were overlooked with evidence to support this? There is nothing to loose by putting in a submission.

SandyIrvin · 28/06/2023 07:54

How much weight did the module where she got 55% carry? At DDs uni each module is only 1/12 (except the dissertation which is 1/6) of the final grade (you can't discount any modules from final 2 years). Your DDs drop could only be explained if that module had a very large weight.

Have the marks been ratified by Board of Examiners? They might look into that mark (how did others do?). Particularly if they are not marking blindlly and more strangely first marker can choose the 2nd marker. Check the unis criteria for appeal. You usually can't appeal on the basis that you think you should have got a higher mark but you might be able to appeal on another criteria eg strike disruption etc or you could appeal saying you believe you are being punished for whistle blowing. See if SU will support her. Could you ask for that module to be remarked by others not involved in the complaint.

aibutohavethisusername · 28/06/2023 17:27

DD gets her results back next Thursday, she is gutted as she hasn’t had one mark back and it was the one mark she needed.

she thinks she’ll get 59.7% but we shall wait and see.

QuintanaRoo · 28/06/2023 18:14

Thanks. I don’t know how many credits the module was worth but she’s adamant she’s now at 63% and needs 65% for Cambridge. She’s been at the SU today and they feel confident she has grounds for appeal and are helping her. It’s not been through an exam board yet.

I’ve also told Dd to email the deputy pro vice chancellor as she had a meeting with her about the course issues a good few weeks ago and one of the things that she brought up in this meeting was that she didn’t want this lecturer marking her work as she was whistle blowing about him but now he’s marked it.

another lecturer has also given Dd a statement saying that she believes this lecturer is biased against Dd and has made unnecessary, negative remarks about her. Sounds like some of the comments are in writing via email.

I guess, but it’s so competitive anyway I think this will really lower her chances.

Daisysway · 28/06/2023 18:37

Cambridge look for students with passion and applying and fighting for a place shows passion. Is she close to a lecturer that would explain about the issues with teaching of those forgotten modules and really support an application...Hopefully they look at the full applications rather than just results....i think their masters start in January?

Maybe show the breakdown the Yr1, Yr2 results and if it is a Jan start can she get any lab work experience?

I love Cambridge and it has so much to offer students ...its a lovely small city.

QuintanaRoo · 28/06/2023 22:16

Certainly worth a shot. She was also seriously ill before Xmas and nearly died but battled on so maybe they’d take that into consideration.

QuintanaRoo · 28/06/2023 22:18

She has to do a year in industry before the masters so will hopefully get a job asap and then start her masters in a year. It’s actually part 2 architecture, not sure if it starts in January with the other postgraduate stuff

Toffeesgirl · 05/07/2023 15:48

Can't remember which username I was using last time I was here but DS got his results today and has got himself a First 😄(Warwick).

Im so, so proud of him - he has worked so hard despite a stressful 3 years. He's still awaiting one essay back but Warwick have said the classification cant go down after marking.

Good luck to everyone still waiting and onwards to first jobs....

Fantastic news!

DD gets her result tomorrow.

Eve · 05/07/2023 19:46

Good luck and congratulations on the degree results.

DS is heading back after his placement year for final year in September.

he had a breakdown 2nd term in 2nd year & didn’t hand in work or attend exams & I only found out about it in the summer.

whilst working he has completed the essays and exams & is now waiting for results. Only issue is some are capped & will really drag his degree grade down so we need to appeal the capping. Not sure it will be successful though.

sammyjoanne · 05/07/2023 20:18

@Eve I totally understand. DD went through an awful time in year 2. She did the work, but was getting 60's in her coursework, and exams was answering 70 % of the questions, so she was borderline on a 2:2. she really felt she did better this year then the boycott happened.

I really hope he is successful on the capping.
Congrats to all the students thats got results 😊

Congrats to those receiving their degree results!
@Eve ds also struggled in second year , it sounds like lots have. I hope your ds enjoys his final year and gets some leeway on his results.

Daisysway · 05/07/2023 21:24

Dd had her results today pleased with the 2:1, one paper not marked which may have brought her overall mark slightly down ...but she had an awful yr 2 too and a bad start to yr3 with her gran passing away so hopefully her masters course will now be okay.

Daisysway · 05/07/2023 21:26

Well done and good luck to all the dc waiting for their results.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 06/07/2023 09:56

Well done to @Toffeesgirl DD and @Daisysway DD. My DS gets his results by tomorrow in Manchester, but it should be a 2:1 unless he's had a disaster. Good luck today @aibutohavethisusername and I hope @Eve 's DS gets what he needs.

Good luck to all awaiting results! 🍀

aibutohavethisusername · 06/07/2023 11:57

Effected by the marking strike, Additional Results day – Thursday 27 July.

aibutohavethisusername · 06/07/2023 12:08

I am so frustrated on her behalf.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 06/07/2023 17:02

I’m sorry, aibu, how annoying! I should add that my DS will either get his results tomorrow or an email confirming they’ll be late, but the maths dept don’t seem to have gone on strike much, so we’re hopeful. 🤞
