Thanks for the ongoing tips. Particularly re interviews. (I lost you for a bit. Kept thinking the old one hadn't been updated on my "threads I'm on" and forgot it had reached its limit!)

Could I just check our thinking on dd's unis? She had an underwhelming UCAT but very good academics (I know they all do). We are Scottish so Scottish uni preferable. She had put Cardiff down for her 4th as she does loads of extra curricular stuff and we must have inferred that they like that at some point. She was never that keen on being that far away though so changed it to Liverpool.

Am thinking it may be a 2 year process for her anyway because of her UCAT, but also thinking maybe Liverpool an ok choice for her as she may have a shot at an interview, at least? I think she has 'submitted' her UCAS now to her school for checking/reference so not sure she can change anything now anyway but is this thinking ok, do you reckon? On Monkey's updated spreadsheet, the UCAT cut-off for Liverpool looks much higher than the FOI request info I looked out - one of which didn't contain Widening Participation data.

Just to be clear you DO need to enter the early deadline choices by 15th October, the advice was that you can submit to school for them to do their bits and add the final choices on 14/15 October.

Monkey2001 · 01/10/2022 20:46

@BungledBundle we pick up our data from real applicants on TSR. It could be wrong, but you can look through the thread to see the profiles of people who were rejected last year. Thresholds can be distorted by all sorts of things, but our conclusion was that the majority of applicants with UCAT score below 2620 were rejected. I don't know whether you have told us her UCAT, but if below 2600 the best options are probably Keele and Sunderland. Or maybe the gap year will be good, I think Scottish students are younger than their English counterparts, will she be 18? It is sometimes an issue.

BungledBundle · 01/10/2022 21:21

Thanks, @Monkey2001 . It seems it's a bit of a risk then. I will relay to dd. Yes, although one of the older ones in her year, she will still only just have turned18, whereas a September birthday English student could be 19. A year "off" could be good in all sorts of ways but I think they feel they are missing out with all their mates heading off. In my day it was the other way round and lots of people tried to have a year off if they could manage it! Thanks again for all the help and pointers.

@BungledBundle you can change your choices up to 14 days after submitting to UCAS. There's a form somewhere on website. If it's just gone to school they can send it back v easily for any amendments. But don't do anything in haste.

Monkey2001 · 02/10/2022 10:31

..... but for early entry subjects it also has to be before 15th Oct. If you submit to UCAS 5th Oct, change 15th Oct it is fine. If you submit 5th Oct, UCAS will let you change 16th Oct, but it will be auto rejected by the medical school. It is very easy to add choices between school submitting to UCAS and 15th October though. 5th choice can be added any time up to the January deadline, or later.

We added Sports Science in June and got offer next day. Our reason was that DS was on the waiting list for Newcastle, so there was a chance of an offer, but if he applied for accommodation after a certain date he would be unlikely to get a top choice, so he applied for Sports Science to get an accommodation application in and withdrew after results day.

Good morning all,
I was looking at student satisfaction table for medical schools. How much attention we should give to this ? Is this rating driven by the curriculum mainly? Is Nottingham low because of the extra pressure of having to do 2 degree in 5 years?

Nothing to add right now but wanted to post so that I can keep an eye on the thread!!

mumsneedwine · 02/10/2022 12:50

@Cratos Nottingham is low due to some stonkingly bad admin errors during vivid. They seem to have sorted their issues out now🤞🤞. They've also listened to student feedback and tweaked the course. The extra degree isn't too much more stress, although you don't get much of a break after 3rd year.

@mumsneedwine thank you very much for clarification .

Sorry for the same message appearing so many times. Mumsnet gave me an error message several times about their server problems. I couldn't access it to check. I have no idea how this has happened.

Monkey2001 · 02/10/2022 13:25

We are on to checking choral scholarships now. If DS1 had known that Sheffield offered £2,800 for a choral scholarship I think he might have wanted to audition before making his decision, although in his year he was offered a £1,000 centenary excellence scholarship from Leicester (with no extra work) and that did not tip the decision. UEA scholarship is £2,000 + free accommodation, but singing commitments every day, so really not possible for a medic unless super organised.

mumsneedwine · 02/10/2022 14:50

@Monkey2001 DD has friends who have sports scholarships and they train 6 days a week. Somehow fit it in around studying and placements. Think they make allowances for when they are in a hospital over an hour away.

Thethingswedoforlove · 02/10/2022 16:52

@Cratos you have been looking really hard at those satisfaction tables haven’t you 🤣🤣🤣

Cratos · 02/10/2022 18:49

@Thethingswedoforlove
😜😂😂
I don't know what I am doing anymore. I just need to see this application process to be over.

mumsneedwine · 02/10/2022 18:50

@Cratos don't focus on student satisfaction too much. One admissions tutor of a very nice Uni told me one year there's dropped to 50%. They asked the students why. And it was because the new seats in the lecture theatre were uncomfortable 🥴

opoponax · 02/10/2022 20:00

DD is still trying to decide between Notts and Edinburgh. School has given her a grace period to decide while they check everything else. Edinburgh has an open day next Saturday but I'm not sure she'll get there with the train strikes and resulting crazy flight prices. Anyone out there with any experience of Edinburgh, particularly as an RUK applicant?
