@Monkey2001 it's Glasgow dentistry that @beneathhereyes is talking about.

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2022 16:49

Doh, missed that it was dentistry. I can't help, I know nothing!

Cratos · 23/09/2022 17:24

@Monkey2001
Hi, you mentioned that extra UCAS scores are important for Barts on the last thread. Would those be additional A levels, As levels, GCSEs & EPQs ? Thanks

beneathhereyes · 23/09/2022 17:32

@Monkey2001 Im the one who should be apologising, intruding onto the medicine board, but I know you are all seasoned experts here! Competing for 14 places.... it sort of puts you off before you've even started 😒

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2022 17:34

@Cratos not GCSEs, but AS, extra A levels, EPQ and music/drama/etc grade 6+

mumsneedwine · 24/09/2022 11:54

@beneathhereyes Scotland is tough for dentistry as well as medicine. If he has safer options in England I'd stick to those. But Glasgow is a fab Uni and does take more RUK than other Scottish ones so worth a punt if he loves it.

mumsneedwine · 24/09/2022 11:55

@beneathhereyes apologies. SHE !!

coffeeandbiscuittime · 24/09/2022 21:43

Hi all - I thought I would join again for this year. DD got A in bio, A in Physics and a B in chem so she has to resit Chem.
She has done her UCAT and got 3080 band 2.

For those that don't know my DD got 3 interviews last year and cried in each one.

She has now got a job for this year. Not quite decided which unis to apply to. She still likes Sheffield, Liverpool and Newcastle but as Newcastle and Liverpool want an A star that may be aspirational.

Good luck to all , it's a hard year for parents and students .

Hello @coffeeandbiscuittime welcome to the 2023 thread. Great UCAT score, that must have been a comfort after a disappointing results day. So many find Chemistry the worst. DS has someone in his Chemistry class who had a Cardiff offer and missed an A by 1 mark!i Wth grade stats set to go back to 2019 levels this year, it is definitely worth trying to play it safe.

I assume your DD does not have any mixed race which makes her eligible for Newcastle Partners? Stupid (but useful) rule which would take her from needing an A* to being eligible for unconditional offer! I would avoid Liverpool as they have a terrible offer to interview ratio as well as needing the A star.

Has she been through them all to see which ones would be happy with an A?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 26/09/2022 20:54

Thanks @Monkey2001 and @HunkyDory69 .
I looked at WP - she does not meet any of the criteria.
She is working as a student tutor - just started - big learning curve but hopefully it will give her confidence.
Just trying to work out which Uni's to apply to now. Quite a few either don't accept resits or want the whole 3 resat.
How is your DS enjoying his jib@Monkey2001 ?

mumsneedwine · 26/09/2022 20:58

@coffeeandbiscuittime fab UCAT. Most Unis accept resits now and I'm not aware of any that need all 3 done. Often they ask for an A star not an A. Where are you looking ?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 26/09/2022 21:32

HYMS and Sunderland both state they need the Alevels in one sitting. She is going to email them to clarify this though.
Her school were shocked at her result as she never got less than an A and was predicted an A star in chem but I think she concentrated on physics and biology and didn't think she would 'fail' chem. oh well it's all part of resilience! We do need to find a chemistry tutor though as she is having to do it independently.
It does make me laugh that she is now tutoring in sciences to help the COVID fall out but her year got nothing.
Glad to see you are still around @mumsneedwine and so glad your kids got in. How many have you got this year!?

mumsneedwine · 26/09/2022 21:47

@coffeeandbiscuittime with her UCAT she can avoid them !! She has plenty of choices with her stats.
We have sooooo many this year, so been a bit busy. More dentists than ever before (think they've worked out it pays better). And several vets who live in tower blocks 😂.
Frantically writing references and getting UCAS sorted but I'm still here.

justjuggling · 26/09/2022 21:48

Evening all! Anyone going to visit Plymouth or ARU on Saturday?

Monkey2001 · 26/09/2022 22:39

@coffeeandbiscuittime DS is LOVING his job, thanks for asking. On Friday he rang the lung function tests himself, no supervision and even had a registrar shadowing him! The other team members are all lovely and he is grateful that his tests do not inflict any pain on the patients, he goes past other rooms where people are taking blood or doing other unpleasant things and is very happy to be where he is!

Did your DD get her papers back to check there were no mistakes? I assume she did. It is worth looking at GANFYD's resit thread, but most accept resits now, and quite a few will only expect an A - www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6649138. I think Bristol and Sheffield might be obvious good choices. Nottingham/Lincoln depend on GCSE grades, the band 2 probably makes Nottingham risky, but Lincoln fine.

HYMS says -

A levels (or equivalent) should normally be completed within a two-year period of study, however, applications are welcome if you achieved at least BBB at a first sitting and are taking one additional year to achieve AAA or equivalent.

So definitely worth getting confirmation that an offer would just be conditional on an A in Chemistry.

PinkKind · 27/09/2022 19:27

Hello All! You learned people!! So my DS got a score of 2750 but SJ band 3. He has 9 GCSE's at grade 7. Shortlisting uni's but am interested in UCLAN. We live in the north west but does anyone have any experience of it? Ds college say they have never had an applicant accepted there. Any ideas?

Monkey2001 · 27/09/2022 19:56

There was someone who got a UCLAN offer on a previous thread, may have been 2020 - will see if I can find it. May not be that helpful as I think he chose to go to Sheffield. 2750 is a good score, I think ARU might be a good option as I don't think they use SJT other than eliminating B4. Edge Hill is closer to you, Exeter would be ok if predicted 3A*, Liverpool, Plymouth. Southampton and Sheffield are both possible, but a little risky, we are not really expecting UCAT cut offs to go up again this year.

opoponax · 27/09/2022 19:56

Sorry I don't know anything about UCLAN other than what is on Monkey's table (only 15 UK places, no UCAT/BMAT, only for local NW applicants and SJT is not used. What about ARU, UCAT looks fine and they only reject band 4. Also, Liverpool looks okay but bear in mind rubbish interview to offer ratio around 25%. Plymouth looks fine on the UCAT and SJT not used. He is bang on the Southampton cut-off last year so that one might be a bit risky. Sunderland looks okay too and they only reject band 4. UAE also fine on the UCAT. He would miss out on some points at the MMI interview station on SJT THOUGH.

My DD got a very similar UCAT score and she’s thinking UEA and ARU plus two BMAT choices.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 27/09/2022 22:11

Hi@PinkKind - I sent a query to edge hill - ormskirt- this is the reply I got. If I moved my child to my home town Bury she might be ok!
Hope this helps you - I know it's not UCLAN but it's close by and it gives a NW option.

We make an adjustment to the UCAT threshold on A100 for those who meet specific widening participation criteria, but these are linked to the school attended for GCSE being non-selective and non-fee paying and then meeting further criteria linked to other measures.

We don’t score the GCSE and A-level grades but details of our entry criteria and selection process www.edgehill.ac.uk/course/medicine/

We also offer the Medicine with Foundation Year route with lower A-level entry. The entry requirements for this are linked to postcode and schooling. It doesn’t matter if the school for GCSEs was in the East Midlands, but we would need to check where she has lived for the year prior to applying. If this was also in the East Midlands she unfortunately wouldn’t be eligible for this route, even if the other criteria were met.

PinkKind · 27/09/2022 22:54

Thank you soo much guys!! UCLAN is off the list then!!
coffeeandbiscuittime
Bury is my borough so will be taking a closer look at EdgeHill!! Thanks again!!

Cratos · 27/09/2022 23:03

My DS is taking UCAT tomorrow and we were looking at the Ucat website. It says he may need to wear a mask and he may need proof of vaccine depending on his test centre. Is this still the case in the UK ? Thanks

I don't think so, nothing mentioned at our test centre.
Good luck!
