Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

@Sunshine4Ever2 I think it makes sense in this respect. Durham is a small city; the university are building more student accommodation but basically they are very tough on results day - like sometimes won't budge for a single mark tough - in part because they simply cannot buy in much accommodation to house first years. UCL might be more flexible on results day as they can offer to London students who will probably live at home and have more options in terms of renting from the private sector. I have no direct experience of UCL but I have heard this argument made by an Oxford admissions tutor in favour of applying to at least one big city, and as a partial explanation of what's going on this year at Durham and St As. Great dilemma to have though, congratulations to your boy!

Stockpot · 13/04/2022 18:24

@fishingeagle, that’s interesting but Edinburgh and the LSE have many DC still waiting.

fishingeagle · 13/04/2022 21:18

@Stockpot Yes I can't see it applying to LSE, on whom we are still waiting! I think they want to stay small and exclusive. And I would have no idea how flexible Edinburgh might be - my instinct is that they are making very high offers to whittle down numbers on results day in the manner of Cambridge but I hope I'm wrong!

andshesoff · 13/04/2022 22:10

I think LSE is predominantly a postgrad institution (in terms of the student body). I’ve heard this put forward as a reason as to why their undergrad communication leaves something to be desired (both in terms of applicants and undergrad students once there). Just what people were saying a few years ago when my eldest applied. They were just as slow then by the way. Sounds like nothing has changed. I got the impression it was admin chaos, coupled with the fact they don’t give a damn, rather than anything intentional. Hope people hear soon and good luck!

Stockpot · 17/04/2022 21:02

DD offered LSE today. Strange it went out on Easter Sunday. I think she is set on St As, but it is nice to have a real choice. Still waiting for Edinburgh.

Oldowl · 17/04/2022 21:59

@Stockpot Congratulations to your DD!! There were lots of LSE offers today. I am pleased your DD has finally heard. A nice Easter surprise!

Stockpot · 17/04/2022 22:02

Thanks @oldowl! I hope everyone’s outstanding unis get back to them soon. So we can start fretting over A-levels!

Puffalicious · 18/04/2022 00:53

Well done Stockpot and miniStockpot.

doubleshotcappuccino · 18/04/2022 07:27

Well done Famille Stockpots! Another offer from LSE here ..

CaliforniaDrumming · 18/04/2022 07:37

Congratulations Stockpot and DoubleCappucino. Are these offers for Economics?

On another matter, have all your UCL bound DC begun applying for housing yet? DS is incredibly busy preparing for A levels and claims to have no time to sort this. I honestly don't want to look at it myself.

Startoftheyear2022 · 18/04/2022 07:55

I'm off to visit Glasgow with my DD tomorrow - has anyone any tips on which bits to visit to get a sense of the university? It's just a self-arranged trip, not a formal offer holders day.

Geamhradh · 18/04/2022 08:30

Catching up with you all after our whirlwind visit.

We are still just waiting on St. Andrews. Seems absurd really, and it's clear she's not going to get an offer now but the email she received did say "all offers will be made by the end of March". Anyway, apart from the non UK places which dd is still applying to, I have a feeling I shall be spending more time in the Premier Inn in Bath which is, on reflection, fine by me! We mooched around the city before flying off and it truly is beautiful.

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango, DD said her only regret at the Offers Day was that she didn't get to speak to many other prospective students- when we arrived we jumped onto the end of a tour and then realised the large Italian cohort in the group all knew each other and had come together, then she was put into a group with a "Mansplaining good looking guy" and then in a subsequent activity with a very very shy girl who was then spirited away by her parents.

I did say to her that Mumsnet may be able to help with having a chat to at least one other offer holder Wink I didn't see any lorry drivers called Dave masquerading as student Mums at the event, and I'm guessing neither did you, so we can vouch for each other as being normal human beings. I may PM you!

Re: the inaccuracy of predictions- In the 80s I know I was a sore disappointment to my school. I was their star pupil and came out with BBCC. I do remember a comment along the lines of "not even one A?" yet I was THE ONLY person in my year to go to university that same year. (Interestingly, one of mine was history and that was one of the Cs whereas the teacher was convinced it would be an A)

@nativityplayreject, welcome aboard.
@kitnkaboodle, sorry to hear about the rejection from Imperial, fingers crossed for your other choices.
@ACloseMatch- hope your dd is feeling OK now.
@stockpot- congratulations to dd!

@Startoftheyear2022 if travelling by subway then from Hillhead walk along Byres Rd and then up University Avenue to see the main buildings.
To get a feel of the area - back to Byres Rd, have a wander along Ashton Lane (runs parallel and behind the subway) and then up to Great Western Rd to Botanic Gardens.

You can als go through the cloisters and down to Kelvin grove Park and Argyll St.
Have a great day.

Eightytwenty · 18/04/2022 10:14

How weird to get offers over Easter weekend. But great news @Stockpot and @doubleshotcappuccino.

doubleshotcappuccino · 18/04/2022 10:42

Thank you ! And thanks for all the support this thread has offered .

Definitely this.

Also walk along Kelvin Way to go to Kelvingrove Park/ Kelvingrove Art Gallery area. Eusebi's Deli on Gibson Street is fabulous for a quick bite/ amazing cake.

If you have time you could also walk along Great Western Road, very studenty and you get a great feel for the area. If you do, highly recommended a small eatery Morning Glory - food is unreal and not expensive.

Let us know if you need anything else. Have a great day, it really is a great city.

Love the west end of Glasgow. Takes me back to my 13 year old self, browsing records in the arcade.

@doubleshotcappuccino a friends son is waiting for IR for LSE. Was that the last one you were waiting for?

I used to do that too! We probably brushed shoulders although I was usually flipping through the big posters!!

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Hillhead Library on Byres Road. And eating at the Ubiquitous Chip with my dad when I was a bit older.

Startoftheyear2022 · 18/04/2022 12:20

Thanks so much @Puffalicious and @readsalotgirl63! I will follow your suggestions and create ways to ensure we visit all the eating ones, even though we're only visiting for a short time! I'm looking forward to it 😀

Eightytwenty · 18/04/2022 13:30

@Puffalicious yes to the library and holiday clubs. Also Saturday morning cinema at the Grosvenor for BFG? films. And pizza at Di Maggios which was on the lane behind our house.

Puffalicious · 18/04/2022 18:02

I wasn't actually West End, touch further out, but my sister- 12 years older- took me to the West End in her old mini for some mooching and cafe culture all the time. I thought I was sooooo cool Grin.

Piggywaspushed · 18/04/2022 18:13

I was originally Great Western Road, then out to the seaside, and then back again but to Knightswood. I used to walk all the way from Knightswood , through Partick and on to Kelvingrove. Not sure I'd have a teenage girl do that now! And I definitely can't walk that far nowadays!

Piggywaspushed · 18/04/2022 18:15

We had an old Mini too! It probably was actually not an old Mini at the time. My sister parked it on one of those vertical hills and the handbrake failed. We came out of whatever nightclub we had been in and found it ten minutes later at the bottom of the hill... my dad was furious.
