Well done to your DS @minesawine . It is a strange time when you enter that adult world, and very different. So few of my DC friends seem prepared to do it, preferring to stay in academia or take jobs with less responsibility.

ifonly4 · 17/06/2022 16:43

simbobs hope you DS hears something soon, and it's good news!

minesawine that such good news.

DD still loving her year abroad. She's hoping to share with a friend next year and they're keeping their eyes open for suitable accommodation. Had a bit of upset recently. She had too much to drink and ended up in intensive care - it was touch and go if she pulled through. Her friends drank the same amount, but were able to phone for an ambulance and then find their way to the hospital. She's ok now, and drinking water when out!

bigTillyMint · 17/06/2022 16:56

@ifonly4, is she sure she wasn’t spiked? DD was spiked aged 17 and it was very scary. She hasn’t been back to the club since.

Benjispruce4 · 18/06/2022 07:50

Hello everyone, this thread dropped off my radar for a bit.
Well done to your son @minesawineI hope he has a bright future ahead and in an exciting area it seems.
@RampantIvy Your poor DD get a migraine during exam. She’s done so well to cope and get through.
@ifonly4 that must’ve been very worrying. Glad she’s ok.
DD is enjoying all the fun that end of term brings to uni. Lots of events/balls/festivals. She had some fantastic news yesterday that she’s won a prize for her dissertation, having been unanimously chosen by a panel from her subject department. We are so incredibly proud of her as you can imagine. Graduation on 28th. No job apart from her ongoing part time, wfh job. Hopefully that will tide her over until she decides which route to take. DD2 has one A level exam left and they seem to have gone ok. 🤞🏻

RampantIvy · 18/06/2022 08:03

Well done to your DD @Benjispruce4. We are visiting DD today to bring some of her stuff back. She has been making the most of her free time with trips out - to Flamingoland and to Manchester to see Harry Styles. She is off to Leeds for the day tomorrow to meet a friend.

The summer "ball" was a fiasco. They had paid £35 for two drinks and some inedible food in a bar that was supposed to bring Ibiza to Newcastle. They left early and went elsewhere. The TripAdvisor reviews aren't very complimentary either.

Well done to those who have found employment. DD needs some time to improve mentally and physically, and just didn't have the headspace to look for work. She is hoping to stay in Newcastle for the time being.

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 09:03

@ifonly4 how awful for your DD. Glad to hear that she's emerged the other side after being so very poorl. I guess it's enough to put one off alcohol for life.

Well done to your DD @Benjispruce4 . You must be very proud.

DS seems to be keeping quiet about his dissertation which I don't take as a good sign. Hmm.

@RampantIvy have heard of other cases of poor value 'balls'. What a pity, particularly when I imagine they will have all got very dressed up.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2022 09:12

Has his dissertation been handed in @LouisCatorze?

They haven't released the marks for DD's course. They expect to hear around the 5th of July.

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 09:35

Yes, about six weeks to two months ago he submitted it @RampantIvy . He was having a 'wobble' about how well (or not) he thought he'd done a week or so ago but I thought it was just the equivalent of post-exam nerves. Maybe he was preparing us? I loved doing dissertations (a real opportunity to focus on what most interests one), so I was quite surprised he'd found it a challenge.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2022 09:50

DD's cohort handed theirs in before Easter but they won't get to hear about their marks until July, so it is likely that your DS hasn't heard either.

Benjispruce4 · 18/06/2022 10:16

DD hasn’t had a mark yet either, the prize is a separate accolade. I think she hears next week.

VanCleefArpels · 18/06/2022 10:22

Not just formal balls that are a bit of a disappointment- DD’s Uni does an end of year festival type thing on campus (lots of green space to use) which was £40 but apparently the food offering was limited and expensive and the headline music act turned up late and did a couple of numbers and pushed off. Hey ho!

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 12:00

Wow @Benjispruce4 well done to your DD! My DSs graduation is the 1st at 9am and we are going to the grad dinner the night before - what could possibly go wrong?!

What a shame about rubbish balls/festivals. DS has really enjoyed his AFAIK. Not cheap though!

DS submitted his diss ages ago, but no mark yet. He thinks it might be Monday? 😬

VanCleefArpels · 18/06/2022 13:01

My graduation was the morning after the Graduation dinner in my College where we were plied (plied!!!) with copious free wine and port. I don’t think I could have felt any more unwell than I did for the graduation ceremony (for which my parents flew in from overseas, grandparents travelled etc etc) not helped by the fact it was a boiling hot day 🤢🥴😂

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 13:52

@VanCleefArpels I can almost feel your hangover across the passage of time – ouch!

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 14:05

This is what I’m worrying about @VanCleefArpels!

VanCleefArpels · 18/06/2022 14:24

@LouisCatorze the pale face and wan smile in the photos is a constant reminder 😂

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 14:33

Ha!

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 15:55

Maybe we won’t get the photos…. 😂

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 15:59

Throwing up at your graduation ceremony would definitely be something that everyone would remember and you'd always be reminded of at uni reunions. Best avoided if possible!

Benjispruce4 · 18/06/2022 16:41

Oh dear how awful that must’ve felt @VanCleefArpels .
DD’s graduation meal is the evening of the ceremony thankfully but we have to drive home that night(4hrs) as I’ve only been given one day off school.😒So it will probably be me driving as DH has the next day off.

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 16:55

Oh no @Benjispruce4 I have 2 days off for DSs as it will take 5-6 hrs to drive up there and we have to be there before 9am. But then we are staying another night and coming back the Sunday. However, similar arrangement for DDs MSc graduation on the Tuesday!

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 16:58

I suppose DSs graduation pics will match his matriculation pics 😂
I just don’t want to feel ill!

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 17:40

@bigTillyMint top tip. I went out with some friends last night. We have a bit of a history of overdoing the drinking. Only we're not getting any younger and clearly can't do the whole heavy drinking and feeling okay the next day thing any more nor want the horrendous hangover. So we started with water and then alternated wine and water all evening. We had four glasses each. Absolutely fine this morning.

LouisCatorze · 18/06/2022 17:42

Four glasses of wine that is.

DS still doesn't drink alcohol at all.

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2022 17:52

There’s free fizz and wine at the grad dinner then cheap bar after…. Will have to pace myself 😂
