@simbobs good luck to your DS for tomorrow and hope you manage to find some way to communicate with him beforehand.

simbobs · 12/06/2022 19:33

@LouisCatorze thanks. X

icanbewhatiwant · 13/06/2022 09:06

Ds is moving all his stuff back this week. He's bringing one load today or tomorrow. (He has a car and is 40 mins away) then the final load at the end of the week. He's off to stay with a friend in London Sunday, then to America on Monday. His contract on his house ends before he comes back from America. Hence having to move out this week. He's all excited about going to America, but reality will hit him when he gets back from America. He's really going to miss university life. Especially with nothing else planned.

LouisCatorze · 16/06/2022 16:54

Hope everyone's keeping cool in the heat?

How is everyone and the young people?

Holding steady for finals results. Good luck to them all.

How did your DS get on on Monday @simbobs . Hoping the university was able to be flexible and take on board your DS's points in a way that will bring about a positive outcome for him?

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 17:10

Following my above message. Ds1 has tested positive for covid today. So his much awaited trip to America may not go ahead 😟

RampantIvy · 16/06/2022 17:15

Oh no Sad
Can it be postponed?

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 17:27

@RampantIvy I don't think so. All paid for. Someone on our UEA thread said covid tests no longer a requirement for USA. But they were sent a list of places to test.

VanCleefArpels · 16/06/2022 18:04

As of last Sunday no test required for entry if fully vaccinated

www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements

when is he off? If not obviously ill (ie any more than a usual summer cold) if it were my child I’d say go given the importance of the event. But I understand my moral compass may be set slightly differently to others’

VanCleefArpels · 16/06/2022 18:06

I would add that according to DD no one is testing any more despite lots of sniffles and coughs going around the place. They are treating it like freshers flu but at the other end!

simbobs · 16/06/2022 18:16

Oh no, @icanbewhatiwant , what a shame for your DS. I think he should just go if not actually unwell, taking extra precautions with masks and sanitising, of course.

@LouisCatorze , he thought the meeting went quite well and the person he saw felt she had a better understanding of the circumstances. However, she isn't the one with the authority to make decisions so he has been told to appeal his case with the help of the Students Union. I am not sure whether he has done anything yet, but is working now. We are away in an area with virtually no phone signal, so unable to do much. This is so time critical now as the deadline for finance application is looming. I read don't know whether it is all too late and it feels quite stressful. On top of that he has to move out of his house and into the new one in 2 weeks. I can see a couple of trips are on the cards.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 18:32

@VanCleefArpels his app won't show his vaccines. It says he needs to verify his identity which will take up to 7 days.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 18:32

@simbobs he only has a sore throat but needs a negative covid test Sunday.

bigTillyMint · 16/06/2022 18:33

Oh no @icanbewhatiwant When is he due to go? Tomorrow?
I agree - v v few testing now.

@simbobs, good his meeting went well, but still having to appeal his case sounds gruelling

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 18:47

@bigTillyMint flying out Monday. Covid test booked for Sunday.

VanCleefArpels · 16/06/2022 18:47

@icanbewhatiwant the app is not the only way to verify vaccinations. Call 119 and ask to have the vax cert emailed

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 18:48

@VanCleefArpels ok I'll tell him. Thanks.

VanCleefArpels · 16/06/2022 18:48

dirs he need the negative test for a purpose other than entering the country?

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 18:50

Though Ds is saying the airline want them tested. But he did book several weeks ago.

minesawine · 17/06/2022 09:53

Good news! My DS has been offered a role with Virgin Airlines in Heathrow Airport. Very different to his original plans of working in the city in Corporate Finance or Banking, but halfway through his course he decided that he didnt want to go down that route and I have been waiting (and just a little nagging) for him to decide what he wants to do instead.

Its going to be so strange (but lovely) having him back home as I didnt see him that often over the last 3 years, and we will have to learn to live together as 2 adults, rather than mother and son.

Its also a bid sad that his days as a relaxed, free, uncomplicated student are now over and the world of work, responsibility and adulthood will soon start.

Exciting times ahead 😁

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 11:01

That's great news @minesawine . Congratulations!

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 12:38

If you don't mind me asking, when did you DS apply for graduate roles and how many weeks/months did he take to get to this point? Just trying to judge when I should start getting worried for DS who only started applying for jobs at the end of May seems an age ago now

VanCleefArpels · 17/06/2022 12:51

@LouisCatorze I wouldn’t worry too much. There’s too many openings for people looking for work at the moment. They will all find something, even if it’s not “the” job it will be “a” job. If you live anywhere near an airport then seriously they will bite his hand off!!

bigTillyMint · 17/06/2022 12:52

That’s great @minesawine!

@LouisCatorze, my DD started applying to grad schemes before Christmas. DS was applying for law internships from then too. Both gruelling processes. I’m pretty sure general grad jobs come up all the time?

VanCleefArpels · 17/06/2022 12:56

@bigTillyMint my DD’s job not a “grad job” as such. It was a job in the field she wanted advertised on Indeed - the salary was what revealed it as an entry level position

minesawine · 17/06/2022 13:15

My DS started looking for graduate roles around December. There are still lots available now. I agree it doesnt need to be a graduate role they apply for, and they should just apply for roles they are interested in
