Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Hi
Glad I found this thread. I never realised this year of my daughter preparing and now waiting for an offer - hopefully!!! It's so nerve wrecking!
When do offers get made. Every morning we look to see if an e mail is there and as yet nothing...
AHHHHHH

bimkom · 20/02/2022 20:41

@Woodshole - one of the many (if not the worst) of the intensely frustrating and difficult thing about applying to medical school is that every single medical school does it differently! They have different rules for how they select for interviews, they have different criteria post interview, and they then send out offers in different ways.
Some (like Oxford and Cambridge) send out all on the same day, and they tell you what day it is, and then you know. Most others drip feed them out, some quicker than others, some over more extended periods than others.
Did you DD get interviews at all four of the medical schools she applied for? Which ones were they? If you tell us that, then somebody on this thread will know what their pattern of offering is.

GladysGeorgina · 20/02/2022 21:30

DS has had a KMMS interview. He’s taking a year out working in a GP surgery at the moment. A-level results AAB so KMMS was his only option. He loved the campus and facilities and has his heart set on medicine. The first batch of offers came out on 4th Feb and he didn’t get one. My understanding is that there will be further offers. Do any of you know any more? The wait seems endless……..

Cirques · 20/02/2022 21:46

@GladysGeorgina I just had a quick look at The Student Room to see what was being said about offers from KMMS. A poster is saying that they were told at interview that batches could be coming out until May. This is the link to the thread that you might find useful [https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7080375&page=53]

Woodshole · 21/02/2022 07:39

Thanks.
Heart set on Cardiff. I think they were interviewing up until the start of
February. She is revising for her mock examinations next week. It would be great to know one way or another soon....

bimkom · 21/02/2022 08:05

@Woodshole - according to this TSR thread - which is specifically for those applying to Cardiff Medicine - www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7035436&page=83
that last year offers came out mid-March. As you can also see from the thread, at least as of five days ago, there were people still interviewing at Cardiff (and there were some with technical problems that sounded like it might need rearranging) - and since they seem to be one of the medical schools that don't send out offers until they have finished interviewing (which is true of most, but not all, some send out to their best performers before interviews finish), it doesn't sound imminent - although of course that could be wrong. Other medical schools people are expecting sooner, I think, although one can never be sure.

Woodshole · 21/02/2022 10:13

Thank you bimkom. Really appreciate this message and the Cardiff the link to Cardiff uni thread. Mid - March! Wowzers.
We need to try to not think about it and just focus on the A levels.

The whole process has been a massive learning experience. The support and advice here is really reassuring.
Woodshole.

BabbleBee · 21/02/2022 12:49

Can I ask for more advice please?

DD received her HYMS offer, as you know. She’s had the detailed email and her base would be York, which was her preference. The accommodation choices seem to be first come, first served and if this is the only offer she gets she doesn’t want to miss out on making HYMS her firm and getting the accommodation she’d prefer.

She’s been interviewed by Birmingham, no feedback yet but would chose HYMS over them. She hasn’t heard anything from Keele, which is her first choice out of the three.

So the dilemma is - does she wait for Keele and risk HYMS accommodation, or does she firm HYMS now. I think she should wait, but she knows how competitive and popular Keele is and doesn’t feel confident she’ll get in.

I think she should wait but she’s agreed that I can ask the wise people here for an outsider opinion!

bimkom · 21/02/2022 13:03

Hi @BabbleBee - no idea, but might be worth keeping an eye on this thread at TSR, which is for HYMS offer holders - www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7171015&page=3 - if you haven't found it already. Some of the other offer holders on there are wondering the same thing. Also ecolier (who is a consultant, but helps out on TSR) seems very knowledgeable about HYMS - he might know about York accommodatoin.

Monkey2001 · 21/02/2022 16:57

@BabbleBee she could ask Keele. They have been very slow this year because I think they had a big jump in applications and they have to assess R&R forms for all applicants. Last time I looked at the TSR thread they had not managed to review all forms yet. If she calls them they can at least tell her whether her fonrm has been reviewed yet and when she can hope to hear from then.

The accommodation scramble isn't as bad as people think - my niece got into York through Clearing (2019) and she was fine.

OP posts:
BabbleBee · 21/02/2022 17:00

@Monkey2001 she spoke to them 2 or 3 weeks ago and was told they had at least another 600 applications to go through. I think she said they’d had over 3000 applications this year!

I keep forgetting TSR, I don’t find it that easy to navigate so don’t think to look there.

bimkom · 21/02/2022 17:23

@BabbleBee Just thinking about your DDs dilemma some more. It seems to me that if we think of worst case scenarios, the worst case scenario if she firmed York late, is one year of not such great accommodation (because it is not accommodation for five years, just one). And the worst case scenario if she firmed early is a) either she could have got Keele and had a completely different and possibly better experience, and b) for sure she will never know, and that means that she will always be wondering.
It does seem to me, in such circumstances, that it is worth risking the not such great accommodation for the first year (out of five). And besides which, it does seem very clear that there is a lot of shake up in the first few months, with a lot of people (maybe fewer medical students, but for accommodation, she is competing with the entire university) deciding to drop out or move home, or don't get the grades - so even if she got awful accommodation initially, there might well be options to shift before starting or mid year, so it might well not even be the whole year.

Monkey2001 · 22/02/2022 12:21

@BabbleBee this is the Keele 2022 thread
www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7089693&page=79

I agree with Bimkom that it is not worth making the decision just for first year accommodation, which may well not be a problem anyway. There are still loads of other subjects waiting for Durham, Bath, Bristol, so it may be a false sense of panic. At least if she gets a Keele interview now, she should be able to have a nerves free interview as she has second choice in the bag!

OP posts:
BabbleBee · 22/02/2022 12:25

Thank you both. You’ve echoed my thoughts- I’ve said she should wait so that she could make an informed choice and she will not be the only one in this position.

Dagbonunion · 24/02/2022 11:58

Has there been any more good news, still waiting for sgul, Brighton and Barts, its a tough process

Monkey2001 · 24/02/2022 12:25

SGUL has started, there are a few offer holders on TSR. Plymouth are all out - don't we have a Plymouth applicant on here? UEA seems to be powering through.

Sheffield would have done it last week in a normal year, but will be 7-11 March this year. Last year Newcastle started 26/2, so they might start soon.

OP posts:
LaLaFlottes · 24/02/2022 12:47

One of DD’s friends who was unsuccessful last year received an offer from SGUL and is thrilled!

Still waiting for outcome for two others, including her favourite but she’s delighted to have a place.

Clarissabella · 24/02/2022 13:43

I'm new here, but saw you asked about Plymouth. My daughter was thrilled to receive an offer from Plymouth yesterday. They had 2500 applicants this year, up about 1000 from last year. It seems they made 400ish offers two years ago; 300ish offers last year; and exactly 161 offers this year in addition to a reserve list of 95 for 150 UK places. We are still waiting to hear from Lancaster, which should be next month. She loves both of these medical schools and would be thrilled to go to either.

Monkey2001 · 24/02/2022 13:54

Ooh, lovely to see the offers coming in, well done @Clarissabella DD and @LaLaFlottes friend. I particularly like to see gap year applicants succeeding after a tough time last year.

Plymouth are being so cautious!

OP posts:
LaLaFlottes · 24/02/2022 14:09

Thank you @Monkey2001 yes I agree about gap year applicants - DD’s friend has worked for a year and applied again and she’s in! So pleased and it shows it’s worth waiting and trying again.

notnowbernadette · 24/02/2022 19:22

My DS has an offer from Keele but I think they are just doing a small number of offers at a time so there are probably lots to come

kackle · 24/02/2022 21:50

Sitting here waiting for UEA. They have issued out offers over last couple of days.

Not heard from other 3 yet after interviews. Newcastle, Edinburgh and Notts

I wouldn't worry about accommodation at York. My friends d's stayed in halls all of her degree. She should wait until all.offers are in and then decide which to firm.
kackle · 25/02/2022 22:31

Edinburgh offer received. Relieved and very happy
