Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Son has completed all interviews now so just waiting now. He is so pleased they are over and he can concentrate on a levels fully. Really hoping for an offer as realistically it's going to be tough. Thinking of you all in the stressful process!! I think it shows great strength of character from our children (and us!). Really appreciate the advice given on here. Good luck everyone.

Solarlantern · 05/02/2022 11:06

Still waiting here - DS finished his interviews a couple of weeks ago and while happy to have had 4 interviews this year after 4 pre-interview rejections last year (shows the difference applying more strategically can make!) just wants to hear either way. Not helped by the Nottingham emails re required vaccinations that came out yesterday with a footer saying the email had been sent out to offer holders! Luckily he was in work so by the time he read it he'd also got the subsequent Notts email apologising for the mistake..

ugifletzet · 05/02/2022 12:26

I haven't got an aspiring DC, I've applied myself for the graduate entry course. If I get on I'll be 35 when I start. My nerves feel tighter than piano wires waiting to hear. Are there any other career changer applicants on here?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 05/02/2022 18:51

@ugifletzet good luck and well done for having the courage to change career.

Monkey2001 · 06/02/2022 09:43

Hello and welcome @ugifletzet. Where are you waiting to hear from? Often mature students are not able to be as flexible about location as school leavers, so don't apply for 4, but you will have experience and hopefully confidence from your post graduate experiences. Good luck!

Thank you @coffeeandbiscuittime and @Monkey2001. I've applied to Newcastle. The thought of having to take the UCAT again isn't appealing, so I hope they have pity on me and let me in! I have lots of relevant experience, but I feel that I didn't express myself as well as I could have done in the interview. It felt like a game show - such rapid-fire questions. Last year GEM applicants apparently started to hear back from mid-Feb so hopefully I don't have long to wait! I can't imagine doing this as a school leaver. Your DCs are made of tougher stuff than I was at that age.

opoponax · 06/02/2022 15:02

@ugifletzet GEM is a different ball game altogether. Well done for getting through to interview. Fingers crossed for an offer for you. Newcastle is fab.

kackle · 07/02/2022 21:26

Is anyone else starting to get really anxious on behalf of your DC? So worried my DC wont get an offer

notnowbernadette · 07/02/2022 21:58

I am concerned that ds could have a very long drawn out wait to find out where he stands. Most of his friends hold University offers now and he has no idea if he's going to University this year.

bitsbots · 07/02/2022 22:23

I'm thinking I might die 10 years earlier if I have to go through the whole process with my DC AGAIN...

Monkey2001 · 07/02/2022 23:04

The wait feels very long. On TSR someone shared a post from Sunderland University about a meeting the Medical Schools Council are having with the Office for Students on Friday. Apparently it will influence the number of excess offers the medical schools make.

This time in 2020 DS1 had his first offer and got all of them by the end of half term, the poor 2022 cohort have at least a month more to wait. Sigh....

Completely agree. DD is the only one in her friendship group applying to medicine. The others are all happily planning ahead - where they’ll be, trips away etc and she doesn’t feel she can do so. It’s tough but hopefully worth it in the end!
Monkey2001 · 08/02/2022 09:09

I think most of Durham, Warwick and Edinburgh are still waiting and DS's GF is still waiting for Nottingham. Luckily (for now) one of DS's best friends is also a medic and there are several at school waiting together.

What about the medic applicants still waiting for interviews/offers while their friends are choosing accommodation!!

BunnyRuddington · 08/02/2022 09:45

I saw that last night too Mumsneedwine and my heart just sank. The 3 Unis DS has had interviews with have tended to send out offers before half term over the last few years. Now with Sunderland saying theirs will be late February I can't see that happening.

speedyhedgehog · 08/02/2022 10:59

This time round will definitely be more drawn out. DD 2 years ago was done and dusted before the end of January. It is proving a much longer road for DS. I just hope he gets an offer 🤞🤞🤞

opoponax · 08/02/2022 12:25

Last year was quite drawn out too though. DS got his first offer from Newcastle at beginning of March and his last one from Manchester mid April.

speedyhedgehog · 08/02/2022 12:34

Yes I agree last year was tougher too. I thought it was bad enough when DD was going through it. 🥵

Haffdonga · 08/02/2022 18:07

Oh yes.

DS has just done his 4th interview feeling absolutely shit with a (non Covid) virus but he chose not to tell the interviewers or rearrange. He says he waffled a lot of light-headed nonsense. After his first 2 weren't great and the 3rd was an internet freezing fiasco he's suddenly feeling that he's blown it for this year.

Doesn't help that all friends and family keep telling him Oh you'll definitely get a place because the NHS are crying out for doctors!

Wish it was that easy! Anyhow Wine to you all who are waiting.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 08/02/2022 22:12

@Haffdonga - that's so funny.... and so true. The great British public are so blissfully unaware of the hoops that have to be jumped through to get into Med School..... and out the other side!

opoponax · 08/02/2022 22:28

Last year at this time I remember thinking that if one more person says "Of course DS will get a place, he's so clever" I will scream in their face. They are ALL clever!

HoneyMobster · 09/02/2022 20:33

Looks like Bristol cut off has settled at 2870 although some 2860 students have been invited to interview and some have been rejected. Much confusion on TSR...

And a Bristol offer reported!

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2022 20:44

@HoneyMobster congrats 🥳. Assume Bristol offer is yours. Fab place. Youngest doing vet med there and loves it.

HoneyMobster · 09/02/2022 20:46

No, not my DD! Still waiting for her interview 😂 It's on 21/02. Just reporting an offer seen on TSR 😉 @mumsneedwine

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2022 21:00

@HoneyMobster that's a shame. Hopefully one for you v soon. I think lots will start coming next week after the meeting on Friday 🤞🤞
