Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

@kackle think Mexican stand-off describes it well. Who blinks first. Once it starts rolling I think they'll be lots of movement as places become free. But until decisions have to be made on June 9th it's stalemate 🤬

notmedicmum · 21/03/2022 12:57

We finally have an offer! From Southampton, which was the top choice after Oxford. So relieved! Offer is AAA which should be achievable as predicted grades are AAA.

I really do think the fact that this was DD’s third interview and that it was panel format helped. MMIs just didn’t work for DD.

Monkey2001 · 21/03/2022 13:09

Woohoo @notmedicmum! Great news. My DS also thought panel was better, I think on line MMIs are not good!

Thank you! @Monkey2001 Where did your DS have a panel interview? DD tells me that most of the interviews for med school are MMI. Agree that virtual MMIs suck!
jenthehen · 21/03/2022 13:41

Still waiting here, 2 rejections and waiting to hear from Liverpool (after an interview) and we’ve heard nothing from Leeds. The resilience of these students is incredible.

opoponax · 21/03/2022 15:07

@notmedicmum that is just brilliant news and congratulations to your DD. You both sounded so stoical about the unfairness of the BMAT tech scuppering her Oxford chance. I am delighted that Southampton has come through for her.

Thank you @opoponax. You have a good memory!
Frustratingly the BMAT score would have been good enough for all the other non Oxbridge BMAT unis, just not high enough for Oxford. I think she would have had a reasonable chance if she’d got an interview at Oxford. In hindsight, BMAT score could have been higher if the school had actually completed subject curricula during lockdown (I only found out recently that they didn’t cover some of the harder topics at all) and if she’d taken a 3rd science A level as well as the 2 she is taking plus maths. But doing 4 A levels plus an EPQ would have been tricky……
But we have one offer so far (one other to hear from) and that’s the most important thing.

opoponax · 21/03/2022 17:04

Absolutely, at the end of the day, one offer is all that's needed and it changes everything. Hope you are celebrating this evening Star

notmedicmum · 21/03/2022 17:31

We will be celebrating at the weekend StarStarStar!

kackle · 21/03/2022 17:47

Great news @notmedicmum xx

Haffdonga · 21/03/2022 18:03

Many congratulations Notmedicmum and dd!
I think you're going to have to change your user name soon and drop the Not 😉

coffeeandbiscuittime · 21/03/2022 20:44

Congrats @notmedicmum and any one else who's DC have offers.
I have spent a glorious weekend walking in the Lakes- with DD looking after the 13 yr old at home ( very good neighbours and gparents nearby) - so if Sheffield isn't to be then she can be a taxi service and childminder for a year 🤣.

notmedicmum · 21/03/2022 21:34

Grin @Haffdonga, although it refers to me having absolutely no clue about the whole medicine application process. Thank you everyone for all your support, help and advice.
Monkey2001 · 22/03/2022 12:05

@notmedicmum Newcastle was a panel of 2. I hope that next year (feels likely!) they will all be F2F which will be better for DS.

Manchester offer received today. Waiting on outcome of UEA and Nottingham interviews and Kings interview next week.

KingscoteStaff · 22/03/2022 19:17

That’s great news @Thecatinthehat123 - which is favourite at the moment?

Thecatinthehat123 · 22/03/2022 20:03

UEA would be the dream as it’s only up the road so no accommodation costs, Manchester is the furthest from home but what an opportunity! To say I have an excited DD is an understatement.

Monkey2001 · 22/03/2022 20:55

Congratulations @Thecatinthehat123! I thought UEA offers were out, are they doing batches?

Both my DC really didn't want to stay close to home, it is quite a different university experience.

Congratulations *@Thecatinthehat123*! I thought UEA offers were out, are they doing batches?

From what I can see from TSR, UEA are running one of these unofficial wait lists at the moment. ie some offers are out, some rejections (I think) are out, and there are a bunch of people that have been effectively put on hold, even if they haven't been notified that they are on hold. Newcastle have officially told you that, but there are a bunch of other universities that seem to have the same tactic but have not admitted it. While others have officially said there is a waitlist. BTW, I saw on TSR today that a handful of people from the Sunderland waitlist have just received offers (although there are others that are still waiting).
bimkom · 22/03/2022 21:46

My DS too emphatically did not want London as he didn't want to be close to home.

opoponax · 22/03/2022 22:20

My DS was clear from the start about not wanting to apply to any London med schools as it was home and all felt too familiar. My DD is taking the same view so far.

Energytearo · 24/03/2022 17:05

My DD was rejected from Leeds today (3rd pre-interview rejection) due to her academic scores (13 A GCSEs and AAAA predicted grades). Doesn't make any sense to me. What more do they expect? Leeds communications has been appalling. There has been no transparency at all. And we are encouraged not to respond.

BabbleBee · 24/03/2022 18:03

Wow @Energytearo that’s crazy! What else is there other than grades like that?

DD had Keele interview (finally!) today. She went into it quite relaxed as she’d be happy to take the HYMS offer. Going up to York for offer holder day this weekend!

HoneyMobster · 24/03/2022 18:10

Sorry to hear that @Energytearo - what was her BMAT? Isn't Leeds a mix of GCSEs and BMAT for interview selection?

Energytearo · 24/03/2022 18:25

@HoneyMobster

Sorry to hear that *@Energytearo* - what was her BMAT? Isn't Leeds a mix of GCSEs and BMAT for interview selection?
Yes, she had tech issues for her BMAT and lost 15 mins (all evidenced by the school) and a Welsh Gov MAT programme and Education Minister wrote to all the BMAT unis. Her score was low 4.0, 3.6, 3A so she thought she'd be rejected on her BMAT not her academics. We will write and follow up. I really feel for this year's prospective students and us as parents!!)
