Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Bitsbots - sorry to hear your news. Xx

We are hanging on waiting for Newcastle

GANFYD · 12/03/2022 12:59
@GANFYD you never post drivel 😊. Can you sort out the F1 fiasco please - I really shouldn't follow #medtwitter. Not good for my blood pressure.
@mumsneedwine
There was a quote or two in the trade rags about that made my blood boil, so I stopped reading before I got too involved 😂😂

bitsbots · 12/03/2022 12:59

@BabbleBee*@GANFYD@coffeeandbiscuittime@KingscoteStaff@HoneyMobster @speedyhedgehog*
Thank you very much for your kind words and information sharing, DS today looks fine, doing his oboe & piano lessons and revision as usual. I'm also feeling much better after a sleepless night. It's great to have you all going through this together, what a year!

KingscoteStaff · 12/03/2022 13:44

@bitsbots And to think when quite a few of us were together on the 2015 Secondary Transfer thread, we thought THAT was stressful!

BunnyRuddington · 12/03/2022 15:43

coffeeandbiscuittime Sheffield ran over a little bit last year. There was one poster on last year's thread whose DC got their offer a little later but it was still a yes. That was us. They started sending out offers on the Tuesday, and by the weekend it seemed like absolutely everybody except us had received either an offer, rejection or waitlist, and we had heard nothing. We spent the weekend steeling ourselves for a rejection, and then on Monday at 6pm an offer showed up. To stay we were astonished was a major understatement.
So Sheffield were definitely still sending offers a full week after the first batch

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that @opoponax & @bimkom.

We had read that Sheffield were sending out emails between the 7th & 11th. DS has had 3 rejections so far so this is his final hope for this year and he's still not heard. Really hoping that it's not a rejection after he's had to wait for those extra days.

speedyhedgehog · 12/03/2022 23:29

DS just showed me the email he got from Sheffield and its not a straight rejection. He's waitlisted. Like others i've seen online he felt not good enough for an offer and that it was done. He felt a bit more positive today that he is still in with a chance and ready to have a chat about it. This year is so so hard. I wish there was an easier way than keeping so many of them in limbo still.

Monkey2001 · 13/03/2022 16:13

@speedyhedgehog I think we have to reassure them that there will be more offers to waitlist people than ever before!

Have Sheffield said anything about the number of offers they have made this year? Plymouth made 161 offers for 150 places, with 95 on reserve list, and I think they will all end up getting offers as I have seen several people post that they have offers from preferred choices.

I wish they would all be as transparent as Plymouth, they told people their score, the number of offers they had made, the cut off score, the scores on the reserve list and the number of people on reserve list. A shining example of transparency, unlike Newcastle!!

We are desperately waiting and hanging on for Newcastle.

Wonder if anyone with a Newcastle offer will decline it ? 🙏🙏🙏

Energytearo · 13/03/2022 18:55

Does anyone know if any candidates who had BMAT technical issues have been offered interviews anywhere? My DC was rejected before interview from Oxford and is still waiting to hear if she has an interview or rejection from Leeds. She was really disadvantaged in the test and her score was low as a result. I’m watching this carefully as she wasn’t offered a resit as she finished the test with glitches and a 2 hour break in the middle.

speedyhedgehog · 13/03/2022 22:18

@monkey2001 I don't think Sheffield have finished sending decisions yet. There seems to be quite a few applicants still waiting on TSR (poor kids they were all expecting to hear by Friday). Maybe after they have released all decisions they will release some stats 🙏🤞
@tearo my ds didn't sit bmat so I haven't followed the progress of offers at any bmat unis. Hope someone will be along soon with some info.

mumsneedwine · 13/03/2022 22:26

@Energytearo some of mine who had BMAT issues have had interviews at Cambridge and Brighton. All still waiting to hear anything from Leeds. Few offers so far from Exeter, Sheffield and Newcastle. Hurry up Unis !!!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 14/03/2022 07:44

Do Leeds drag their heals like this every year? It really doesn't do them any favours.

I'm so glad DD didn't apply there! (Mind you, DS is at Durham and they are just as hopeless when it comes to admissions).

Monkey2001 · 14/03/2022 09:11

Leeds was the last to respond to DS1 back in 2019. But when they did respond they sent you a decision and a link to a document showing where your score was in the cohort, broken down to deciles, which was encouraging as he only just missed the cut.

There are a few others being super slow this year, King's are saying May.

OP posts:
MidLifeCrisis007 · 14/03/2022 10:50

My DD interviewed with St Andrews in November and they are still interviewing this week. Given they interview so few comparatively speaking, it's bonkers. She's been waiting for 4 months!

There's so much collateral damage caused by these slower unis. Students won't firm and insure to get the wait lists moving until they've heard from all their choices so Kings is really adding a lot of stress to the cohort who should be focussing on their A levels in May and June!

I'm another who thinks Plymouth deserve a big thumbs up.

HoneyMobster · 14/03/2022 11:06

I think it's true the whole system can only move at the pace of the slowest universities to offer. DD will probably release Newcastle but won't do it until she has something else to insure with. If Leeds had got their act together then that Newcastle place could go to @kackle or @Monkey2001 DCs. I hope it does!

Bless you. Its just one big game of roulette isn't it

Weve just had a Nottingham rejection this morning

HoneyMobster · 14/03/2022 11:16

Shame @kackle but you do have Edinburgh? Which a lot of people would dearly love...

I know and we are so so privileged as most kids would love to study there

DC had Newcastle as their number one choice but these things happen for a reason I gues.

kackle · 14/03/2022 13:46

*guess

Monkey2001 · 14/03/2022 14:00

Sorry to hear about Nottingham @kackle. Have you or your DC tried to get any info out of Newcastle? The more people contact them, the more they will realise the impact of their non-transparency. I think we all understand what they are trying to achieve, but given that communication and empathy are key criteria they want from applicants, they could do with a bit themselves!

OP posts:
BabbleBee · 14/03/2022 14:28

The wait is agonising, especially when other unis are going at pace.

We are desperately seeking tutors for DD. I’m really not sure now if she’s going to get the A Level grades she needs… just one worry to replace another as it gets solved.

kackle · 14/03/2022 14:34

We have tried ringing them. I work for NHS, literally round the corner from the uni and tried that angle. They wouldn't say anything at all.

Like you, more transparency is required as I don't see the point in keeping fingers crossed for waitlist place if you are at position 250 or similar

KingscoteStaff · 14/03/2022 22:53

I can't remember if there's anyone else on here waiting for Barts? They seem to be dribbling offers out in a bizarre order.

kackle · 15/03/2022 07:40
