Thought I would start a new thread as its likely to fill up quick now.

So here we are after many months of applications, assessments and interviews. The wait is finally over for those with DC who have applied to Oxford. Those with Cambridge applicants have another 2 weeks to wait until the 25th Jan (bummer!!)

You have all been a lovely bunch to share this journey with and I wish your dc nothing but the BEST OF LUCK for tomorrow (and the 25th). Flowers

I agree about the role of the parent and their background making a significant difference. Both my husband and I were at Oxbridge - and privately educated - and I can see even in my DCs state schools (one grammar, one comprehensive ) that those with graduate professional parents often even unwittingly able to provide confidence / aspiration / cultural opportunities to their children. From an early age our DC saw going to a top Uni as normal / expected. Social mobility is really poor in the UK and the decreasing funding for schools doesn't help.

My DS, a fresher at O, says O is very southern- we are from way north. Looking at these admissions statistics it is not very surprising as ~40% of applicants are from London and the SE. And the proportion of those offered does match to some extend proportion of young people getting AAA. www.ox.ac.uk/about/facts-and-figures/admissions-statistics/undergraduate-students/current/nation-region
If you look at the bottom you can drill down to each School via region, local authority or constituency - quite interesting.

DS has just had a Durham offer for engineering - think he's now stressing because all of his offers so far (Bristol, Imperial and Durham) are A*AA and he's not really left himself an insurance choice, in case of a meltdown during the exams.....

Juja · 12/01/2022 18:50

@Panicmode1congratulations to DS on his offer from Durham, plus Imperial and Bristol - what a great selection.... though I can see they are all high as you say; he doesn't by any chance have a spare space on his UCAS form as the deadline hasn't passed yet. Or perhaps try and find out if any of these offer any flexibility on results day - Durham I'v heard usually doesn't...

PermanentTemporary · 12/01/2022 19:19

@Panicmode1 - if in the worst case scenario he drops a grade or two and none of them will flex (that really is worst case), I have no doubt that as he's going for Engineering he would be an amazing clearing candidate. He should perhaps have a look around and consider where he might want to try for in that situation, or he might prefer to go for a post results application and get some work experience?

SandyBayley · 12/01/2022 19:19

Excellent news @Panicmode1 - 3 very good choices. I'd echo what @Juja says about Durham, very unlikely to be flexible if an offer is missed.

Panicmode1 · 12/01/2022 19:20

Thanks @Juja - no spare spaces on the form; he's got an interview at Loughborough in Feb (postponed as the date given was the same day as his Cambridge interview) but he doesn't think they will offer much lower than Bristol in any case.

He's predicted 4 A*s so he should be fine in theory, but he does a lot of extra curricular stuff too, and I think the nerves and stress and time pressure, AND the run up to mocks are getting to him!

Panicmode1 · 12/01/2022 19:22

Thanks @PermanentTemporary and @SandyBayley - he's not v good at taking advice from anyone, least of all his olds! But will gently suggest thinking about options in case of the need for a Plan B.

DD has had incredibly lovely support from her teachers over the last few days. I've been really touched at how many of them have gone out of their way to speak to her and help her think about what she might do next. It almost feels like too many possibilities! She also got her official EPQ result email today and her ARSM certificate so I think she's feeling a bit better.

Fingers crossed for an offer from somewhere else now!

SirVixofVixHall · 13/01/2022 22:04

Dd got an offer from UCL yesterday, so she has offers from everywhere she applied to now.
Her Oxford offer is AAA is that a decent offer ?

PermanentTemporary · 13/01/2022 23:13

Fab on both counts SirVix! If ds gets a C offer it will probably be AAA.

Notonetojudge · 13/01/2022 23:14

@Panicmode1 would he consider dropping one to concentrate on the other 3 grades? My ds was originally doing 5 but dropped maths and further maths. He had 5 A* after his first year, and is set for an ‘easy’ set of exams as only needs 3 x As for his Oxford offer.

Has also had offers from UCL, Edinburgh, st Andrews and Bristol, so doing 3 doesn’t seem to have disadvantaged him.

Stockpot · 13/01/2022 23:16

That sounds like a great offer! I presume most Oxbridge offers will include at least one A*.

Panicmode1 · 14/01/2022 06:08

@NotOneToJudge he may drop DT, but his offer for Imperial is design engineering and so he thinks he ought to stick with 4.

I don't know why he is surprised by the offers, and I'm sure C will be higher if he were to get an offer. He's perfectly capable of achieving 4 A* but I think the reality of the required work rate between now and all of his exciting summer plans, is starting to hit home!

Panicmode1 · 14/01/2022 06:09

Congrats to your DD @SirVixofVixHall!

SirVixofVixHall · 14/01/2022 07:08

Thank’you I will tell her. We have had a horrendous year as a family due to the shocking death of a young family member. Dd has also had additional massive stresses, including a health issue.
We are all so sad and grieving that it is hard to take in this really good news. She took an hour to believe that the offer was real.
I had been very sanguine about the whole thing when she sent in her UCAS and then suddenly started to really worry about it, I just wanted to protect her from any more sadness . I was so focused on preparing her emotionally for not getting an offer that I hadn’t really thought beyond that, and she has done the same. I have found the mutual support on this thread really helpful and I feel very invested in all your amazing teenagers and their lives opening up now, wherever they go on to.
I wish all of them a happy and fulfilling time. If I could I would hand round cake and champagne to all of us.

An excellent set of offers to hopefully go a little way to offsetting what sounds like a horrible year. Well done to her SirVix

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2022 09:09

Oxford gives standard offers. I don't know what subject SixVix's DD applied for but anything such as History/ English/ Law the standard offer is AAA. Cambridge varies in its offers but not Oxford.

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2022 09:13

Does anyone know how Eton fared this year? Better than last? I realise I may well not get an answer on this thread but you know, just curious. I expect Westminster was fine as usual but interested in any swings elsewhere, if anyone is prepared to say.

nolanscrack · 14/01/2022 09:26

Yes,people know how Eton got on this year, thanks for asking.

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2022 09:29

Oh dear, not good again?

Yes, a very different approach Eightytwenty. The AAA as standard for most humanities puts most offerees in quite a relaxed position. Over the years I've seen a few get too relaxed! But the stress of some of the Cambridge offers beggars belief, and that's before you get onto STEP.

nolanscrack · 14/01/2022 09:51

Never understand why some people have such an unhealthy obsession with a school they have no connection with..I"m sure that like all schools the information will be available in time for random members of the public..
