Durham 2022 applicants

New thread for those applying to Durham for 2022. What time of year do Durham usually make offers please and do they interview? DS applied early and we are new to all this but are wondering if he has now missed the deadline for ranking Colleges (unlike most of his friends applying who managed not to miss this and did this early on) as he can’t now see this option in the portal or if he hasn’t missed it then is their a deadline for doing this please? I know in previous years college rankings may have been irrelevant. Thanks

Some people have already have offers but generally they are infamous for making late offers although there is usually a flurry after/around Oxbridge offer dates too. There is also a difference between faculties too.

SJ1975 · 29/12/2021 17:21

My DS is also waiting to hear from Durham. From reading other threads, I believe they have previously given out some contextual offers before Christmas but most people don't hear anything until January and February, sometimes as late as March. This year I have only heard of international offers so far, so I'm guessing they are being cautious because they were oversubscribed in a number of subjects this year. My DS other offers but is very keen on Durham so it's frustrating that they offer so late.

JemimaMuddledUp · 29/12/2021 17:25

I thought they weren't allowed to make offers until the application deadline next month? This is what we were told when I asked whether it was worth applying early (DS is not applying to Oxbridge so the deadline is in January).

SJ1975 · 29/12/2021 17:25

I read on The Student Room that the college ranking form was taken down from the applicant portal because they didn't want applicants to fill it in until offers are made. My DS did fill it in but I think it can be changed until shortly before college allocations are made.

NinaProudman2022 · 29/12/2021 18:24

Thats reassuring @SJ1975 maybe he hasn’t missed the 🛶 re ranking his college preferences yet. Thanks 😊

Was this a specific department at Durham that told you that? It may be an internal rule there, but isn't universally applicable. Universities receiving applications through UCAS have to give equal consideration to all on-time applicants, but there is no UCAS-imposed regulation preventing them from making offers prior to the relevant deadline.
OnTheBenchOfDoom · 30/12/2021 12:35

@JemimaMuddledUp where did you hear that? Hopefully from a specific department who may well do this but this is not universal across the board. Ds is in his first year at Durham, he did have a contextual offer from Durham in the November but only qualifies on POLAR postcode. He had 3 other university offers before the end of November none of which were contextual.

Durham is known for very late offers, they also do not like being an insurance choice so it does seem that they wait until the Oxbridge offers are out by mid-January before starting to make offers.

Durham's contextual offer is one grade down so instead of A*AA it was AAA however it also came with a put us as your first choice and we will accept AAB. They are not alone in doing this, other universities do it too and drop the grades much lower.

Ds was only interviewed for Cambridge, none of the others.

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/12/2021 12:48

I was told this by DS' school when I asked whether it was worth him applying in the autumn as he knew where he wanted to apply and obviously with places like Durham there will be lots of applicants applying early as they are also applying to Oxbridge.

Oh well, too late to worry about it now.

Longtimenewsee · 30/12/2021 13:07

Dd ( 1st year Durham) also had a contextual offer in the November. Science subject

nonotmyne · 30/12/2021 13:59

My DS isn't expecting to hear until the end of January. He got an email from Durham on Dec 4th saying ...

"Your application is important to us, and we haven't forgotten about it. We can reassure you that not having heard yet in no way means you are less likely to get an offer!
We're working on applications received before the 26 January so please don't worry if it takes a while for you to hear back. As soon as we have made a decision, you will see this in UCAS Hub.
We appreciate this might be a bit frustrating, but we do this to give everyone the opportunity to be made an offer of a place, regardless of whether they applied early, or just before the deadline. Our application process is outlined in What happens to your application?
Thanks for your patience. If you need to get in touch with us please see our FAQs or contact us via Ask Us."

UCL have sent similar emails.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 31/12/2021 09:12

@nonotmyne it is a standard response considering 76,940 students got their applications in before 15th October 2021 deadline. 53,270 of them applied to 5 universities. Info on UCAS website. So universities will start sifting those rather than wait until the end when they are all in. Everyone ends up in the pile some just earlier than others.

@JemimaMuddledUp lots of sixth forms prioritise getting the Oxbridge applicants done first due to that early deadline so I can see why you were told that. Yes they have to give equal consideration however if they really want a student then they will offer early. Ds confirmed Durham as his first choice after rejection from Cambridge (top choice obviously) which was mid January, so before the entry deadline.

Warwick said end of March for the vast majority but some as late as May.

JemimaMuddledUp · 31/12/2021 10:43

@OnTheBenchOfDoom I think only one pupil applied to Oxbridge, so it probably wasn't prioritising that. Maybe they misinterpreted the equal priority rule - the head of the sixth form explicitly said that universities weren't allowed to look at applications before the January deadline, so it was pointless applying early.

As I say, too late to worry about it now.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 31/12/2021 21:03

@JemimaMuddledUp early entry deadline is also for medicine, veterinary and dentistry not just Oxbridge. I think a lot of sixth forms don't necessarily have the best advice. I learned more on here (MN) than anywhere else. We couldn't do open days due to lockdown so couldn't access department admissions people in person.

Ds had just started sixth form (state sixth form in the North) and was selected by a Cambridge outreach program designed to guide them as to what Cambridge is looking for. I read the Oxbridge aspirants threads on here to find out more as at no point had anyone told Ds he was Oxbridge material despite his GCSE grades. Sixth form couldn't give us any information as it is Cambridge people who come into the sixth form.

This meant I found it by November of year 12 what he should be doing in terms of supercurriculars for his personal statement. Also there are freedom of information requests which showed how many offers were made by universities in which months. It is on the website What Do They Know. I cannot find those links now and we are in a weird year just like Ds was last year. However, it shows offers are made way before January deadline, not huge amounts but they do offer. Obviously the vast majority are offered after January but the pile starts early.

I know you are saying too late and clearly it is but if you have younger children or someone asks you about applications to uni you may advise them to just get their application in. On this higher education board there are parents who have had 3 or 5 or 8 children go through the university application process who tell of their experience generously on here. There is a long running Durham thread for applicants, current students and alumni too. A wealth of information on there too. I hate text as there is no tone but I am truly trying to be helpful.

NCTDN · 01/01/2022 22:20

The only place DD has not yet had an offer from is Durham but we were expecting that. It would be great to get one that says put us first and your offer is lower...

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 02/01/2022 17:23

My DD had an offer from Durham Mid-February last year, it was the last of her 5 offers. From memory she then ranked her college options within a couple of weeks. I hope this helps.

DS was selected for something similar (Seren Network) but they didn't tell him anything about anywhere other than Oxford or Cambridge.

I know the deadline is earlier for some subjects too, as well as Oxbridge, but I don't think anyone applied for them either. It is a small school with a very small sixth form so everyone knows everyone.

DS is my second child to go to university so I'm fairly familiar with the process, or at least I thought I was! Maybe he won't end up with a place in Durham at this stage, but there are bigger things to worry about I guess. It is pointless advising anyone else to get theirs in early as the school won't have written references until January and they can't go without those.

Acuppaandcake · 22/01/2022 12:03

My son received an offer from Durham on Wednesday for Geography Bsc - I think this department must be one of the earliest. Offer holder days are towards the end of March but bookings for them aren't open yet.
He heard from Newcastle on the same day - so that's all of his in now.

Benjispruce5 · 23/01/2022 17:33

DD is in 3rd year at Durham. I think she heard in March!! No interview. They are always late.

Ams2900 · 01/02/2022 20:48

Daughter waiting to hear / gap year so grades already … Oxford a no ,3 other offers butDurham her top … can’t stop refreshing her emails

mich101 · 01/02/2022 22:13

Son got Durham offer yesterday for Engineering. Standard offer, home student A*AA. E-mail today with link and log in to rank accommodation, hope this helps

Fruitygal · 04/02/2022 21:10

Does anyone know if biological science is a late offer one - can only find a single person with an offer so far this year and they were someone who already had their grades from last year.

mmzz · 07/02/2022 13:49

May I join? DS2 is waiting to hear from Durham and DS1 is in his second year there.

I looked back and DS1 got his Durham offer this week two years ago, but the difference was nobody was taking account of covid back then. Now the UCAS dates are different - the universities used to effectively have until the end of March to decide but this year they have until 19/5.

I am telling myself and DS2 to just be patient and wait but that is easier said than done!

Elowil · 07/02/2022 14:30

We're also only waiting for Durham now for Spanish and History. Didn't get into Cambridge and already holding offers from Exeter, Warwick and Kings College London. It's so nerve wracking 😬. Durham now DDs preference due to collegiate system. Really hope she gets an offer after the disappointment of the Cambridge rejection.

mmzz · 07/02/2022 15:37

DS1 loves Durham. The college system is good but he also prefers the independence of living out than when he was in college accommodation. He likes the way everything is in walking distance, and most people live far from home, so its like living in a student bubble.

He says that people maybe mentioned their Oxbridge attempts in Fresher's week, but no one ever talks about it now. (He was an Oxford-reject).

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet:
