New thread for us, lots of lovely support whilst we wait. Some of our lovely DC now have interview dates whilst the rest of us hold our breath and try not to hassle our teens into checking their SPAM folders at least several times per day Grin.

Sorry @Startoftheyear2021 - didn't mean to hit post! So, after all the waffle what I mean is good luck to your DD. She'll get something that works for her, and I hope that after a short period of being disappointed, she rallies and cracks on.

Best wishes, and thanks for sharing.

Puffalicious · 17/11/2021 17:27
@Puffalicious ha ha we have both posted this on the same thread. Whit's fur ye, ll no go by ye'. Cultural education for the rest of you 😂.
So we have! My mammy always said it and it's very true. Another I keep saying to myself is 'Dinnae fash yersel" if I get too worked up about all of this! Cultural education indeed!

Sorry to hear your news @Startoftheyear2021 but I am sure that your DD has some other brilliant choices available to her.

No news here from Oxford but DS has an interview with Imperial (Comp Sci) - anyone else?

Dinnae fash yersel is one I do know and use. The other one I did not know! The shame.

Startoftheyear2021 · 17/11/2021 18:23

Thanks for all your lovely messages. It's a bit tough on her as others are hearing they have an interview but I am sure she'll thrive elsewhere.
Good luck all! I'll lurk as I'm invested in your DC's outcomes but won't post 😀

@SandyBayley Thought you might know the answer to this. The IB results come out before A level results - is this an advantage in terms of choosing accommodation? Because the IB students can accept offers earlier? Or do all students (deferred students and all students with whatever qualifications) have to wait?

Thisisconfusing · 17/11/2021 19:32

Joining you all too if I may. DT both applying to Oxford and imperial; and then 3 different ones each. One for chemistry , one for biology. A big surprise that there was not entrance test for their courses . Does that mean they will interview more than courses where they have tested ? They both have offers elsewhere, one has an interview at Imperial, the other’s course at imperial doesn’t interview . I’m assuming we might hear next week . So trying to be fairly relaxed about it . Applying for masters so offers will be higher .

SandyBayley · 17/11/2021 19:48

@Horace123 - DS1 did A levels so I don't know. I think some universities might allocate accommodation earlier to IB students but most do it when all the results are in. Did you see the last exam is 20 May 😊

Not my child but one if DD's friends got an Oxford biochemistry interview today so things are moving...

ofteninaspin · 17/11/2021 20:04

@Thisisconfusing, good luck to your DC with their applications.
According to the Oxford admissions stats for Biology for 2018 to 2020, on average just over half were invited to interview and 17% were made offers.
I have a DD in fourth year of the MBiol.

ofteninaspin · 17/11/2021 20:05

In 2018, DD was invited to interview at the end of November and interviews were a week later.

Horace123 · 17/11/2021 20:06

@SandyBayley thanks. Yes, timetable is on the fridge already and results day blocked out for celebrations.

How exciting that interview news is starting.

SandyBayley · 17/11/2021 20:09

5 July! I might book the day off now 😊 @Horace123

ProggyMat · 17/11/2021 20:43

@Startoftheyear2021 sorry to read that your DD has not been invited for an interview.
For me,I ascribe to the notion that ‘what’s to be will be’ and would rather, in regard to my child, that if ‘it’s not be be’ that they don’t have to ‘jump through any more hoops’ - if that makes sense?
@Horace123 I’m shite at PMs but drop me a message…

goodbyestranger · 17/11/2021 21:23

Biochem has no aptitude test, so always earlier.

fishingeagle · 17/11/2021 23:06

@Startoftheyear2021I’m so sorry to hear that. I strongly suspect we might well get similar news here any day now. It takes courage to aim high when the most likely outcome of any application is a rejection. I wish your DD every success elsewhere.

Thisisconfusing · 17/11/2021 23:50

Thanks @Ofteninaspin that is very useful to know .

Horace123 · 18/11/2021 05:50

@ProggyMat I've sent you a test message - I'm a bit shite too so let me know if you get it.

pantjog · 18/11/2021 08:02

Sorry to hear the disappointing news @Startoftheyear2021.

TheresACrackInEverything · 18/11/2021 08:52

@Malbecfan

Just popping in to say that *@Chilldonaldchill*'s description of pooling is what happened to DD. She was interviewed by a central C college. Because her 1st interview was at 9 and we live in Devon, she was offered overnight accommodation. I drove her and stayed in a B&B. She had a 2nd interview there at 10:30ish and was free to go by 11:30. We were back in E Devon by 4pm!

The next thing she heard was a letter from a different college on offer day. We went to visit that college in February half term and she decided to accept following that visit.

At the end of her 1st year, her then DoS (Director of Studies) who is also an admissions tutor chatted to her and said how pleased he was that he picked her out of the pool. Since then, every year, he repeats this. She is now a PhD student doing some work for him at the same college. After her graduation, as we were walking to dinner with her, BF and BF's DP, he was cycling along, screeched to a halt and after ascertaining we were indeed her DP, told us what a good pick she was from the pool!

That's such a lovely story.
XmasEveshopper · 18/11/2021 09:03

@Startoftheyear2021 sorry to hear that and I hope she soon has a raft of other offers. Do you think there is a problem with Oxbridge and the IB? I wonder sometimes how well it's understood and whether the grades offered are comparable to A level offers. I have a younger DC who's considering IB and I worry whether it could affect their chances when applying for science or medical courses.

SandyBayley · 18/11/2021 09:05

I don't think there is a problem with the IB. DD's school offers both IB and A Levels and both sets of candidates do well in terms of offers.

TomelettewithGreggs · 18/11/2021 09:12

Am having a hard time with the wait today. I woudn't usually, but my older DD is not doing well at uni for a variety of unfixable pandemic related reasons, so I really want a "win" and an easy time for DS. A win not necessarily meaning Oxbridge but at least his 2nd or 3rd choice uni.

nolanscrack · 18/11/2021 09:34

I dont think that there is a problem with IB,the problem was that the candidates predicted grades were lower than the standard offer,so the application was always going to be weaker than other applicants.
