Oxbridge Aspirants 2022...Part 2...applications submitted now the tense wait!

Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

DS applied for Oxford History. Also applied UCL, LSE, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

His college have been less than helpful so I’m in a bit of a panic that they won’t submit it or enter him for the HAT before the deadline. Do they get a confirmation email when the school submit? The internal deadline was over 2 weeks ago and I just want it to be in.

DeadlineLooming · 11/10/2021 21:26

Sorry for ambushing this wonderful thread. I'm all over Mumsnet like a rash tonight. I'm reposting this from a thread I've just started on Scotsnet. And I've also posted it on another thread in Education. Apologies to those who are sick of seeing it! BUT if you can help me I will be so grateful! In one of my many other name changes @piggywaspushed was very helpful when I was being talked down to on a thread about Personal Statements. Here's what I put on Scotsnet and in Further Education:

Sorry for the slightly panicked title and what's going to a bit of a long one. I'm going to put this in Education as well but I know there are some good Scottish teachers on here like Lidl and...( struggles to remember names of any more but know s that there are LOADS!)

I'm a serial namechanger and have been on here for years and know that @aurea has a child at Oxford and she's been very helpful in the past.

So my dilemma. My son is applying to Oxford and the deadline (as many of you on THIS thread will know!) for entries is October 15th at 6pm. Miraculously he put his UCAS in last Thursday 7th October with all his other 4 options so he was feeling well ahead of the game. He wants to study PPE and needs to take a Thinking Skills Assessment test. These are usually held at registered centres and some of these are schools. His state secondary in Glasgow is not a test centre so he's been told that he and the handful of other Oxbridge entrants will be doing their various entrance tests at Glasgow's 'presenting centre organised through St Roch's Secondary'.

I'd been reading everywhere things on the official Cambridge TSA site like:

"Please note that school error will not be taken into consideration if the deadline for registering for these tests is missed, so make sure you check that you have been registered and have your candidate entry number before the 15 October deadline"

So I have been asking my DS if he has proof of registration and/or a candidate number for a few weeks and he's asked his teachers and says he's had lots of reassurance that everything is in order. That it's going to be happening at St Rochs, not to worry etc... But nothing in writing and after reading the above, I thought, I would really like to have that candidate number in my possession.

Friday was an Inset day at my son's school and now it's half term but I managed to speak to a pastoral care teacher on the phone who has been dealing with my son's UCAS application and explained what I wanted. She spoke to a teacher who apparently had put all the applications in to the test centre and more reassuring noises were made.

I followed up the phone call with an email to the Head teacher who kindly emailed me back (she's lovely) and said that this year is slightly different in Glasgow as they have a presenting centre organised through St Roch's Secondary. She also said that they "had written confirmation in an email that DS and our entries from XX school have been received by the centre." She said they had sent an email to the Centre asking for specific details but had not got a reply yet (this was Friday afternoon). Nothing came through today but it is only Monday.

I am now getting a bit anxious. I phoned up a TSA information line this morning (the first thing they asked for was my candidate number!) and gave them my son's details but they could not find any record of him but then they couldn't find any record of St Rochs being a test centre either - they only had one Glasgow test centre and that was near George Square in Glasgow.

Does anyone here know whether St Rochs is a test centre and if I can even get hold of them during half term? Is there only one St Rochs Secondary in Glasgow? More generally (for those of you who don't live in Scotland), is it common for Head Teachers to be checking their school emails regularly during a Half Term? If I can't get through to the school, what should I do next? What would you do next in my shoes? I don't know any of the teachers personally so can't make a cheeky phone call.

I just want to say that the school have been wonderful in supporting my son through his application. They've really worked hard and put in the time with him. Which is just as well as he didn't get any mentoring through schemes for State school pupils like Clydeside, even though he applied. And we put our names down for schemes like Scotland for Oxford and didn't hear anything back either. We didn't hear about UNIQ until it was too late - that's the pandemic for you. But he's spent so much time watching helpful videos on Oxford Uni's website and working really hard to get his reference up to scratch. It's a really aspirational punt on his part that came out of the blue for us (who went to dodgy Polytechnics many, many moons ago!) I'd hate for it to be scuppered by an admin error.

It might all be fine of course and I'm panicking unneccessarily but I just want to have his candidate number and know that all is present and correct. I can't imagine what he would do if he didn't even get as far as taking the TSA test after all the work he's put it.

And again, the school have been brilliant but they don't have many kids apply to Oxbridge - three or four a year and some years less? They've obviously done it before but they have never had anyone apply for PPE before so they might not have done the TSA route?

If you've read this far, thank you. If you can help in anyway, thanks even more Smile

And for those of you on this Oxbridge aspirants thread, rest assured I will be back once I get this sorted to share this crazy process with you all. And I will engage properly and not just barge in like this!

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2021 21:48

Hi. Don't panic! And thanks for your kind words. Reading between the lines it sounds like St Rochs ( where I did work experience many moons ago!) is somehow in charge but not actually the test centre?

Is there anyone to phone at the Oxford college? Could your DS try student room in case any other Glasgow applicants are in the same boat?

DeadlineLooming · 11/10/2021 22:30

Ah piggy thanks for replying - that's a good idea about The Student Room - might put a post on there tonight. I'm thinking, it's only Monday, we can fix it if there's an issue. I might just see if I can get hold of the Headteacher at my son's school and failing that see if anyone picks up the phone at St Roch's. I'm a bit wary of approaching the Oxford College just in case I'm getting in a pickle over nothing and it reflects badly on my son in Grin I'm also paranoid that my tinkering might break something!

goodbyestranger · 11/10/2021 22:39

Yes absolutely do not phone the college yourself, leave that to your DS. I don't think the college will be able to help much in any event.

A quick google suggests that there's a test centre on St Vincents Place but the phone number is clearly dud (missing a digit).

My feeling is that school seems to have it in hand just fine and that you're panicking for no good reason. I don't think any of my DC were ever given a candidate number ahead of time for their Oxford tests; they were just asked to fill in a request in September and left the school to it. That said, their school was a test centre and I don't think there was any history of messing up, so they would have just assumed it was all good. But be careful, your panic will be very, very evident to your DS, and that can't be helpful.

goodbyestranger · 11/10/2021 22:42

Not great that your DS didn't hear back from Oxford for Scotland though.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 12/10/2021 10:05

DD just had email from UCAS to confirm her college has submitted her application...now the tense wait. DD has applied to Clare college, I cannot see dates for interview but presuming mid December.

Does anybody know when Cambridge are likely to send out interview invites? I think I read somewhere that they do interview a high proportion of applicants so heres hoping she makes it that far Smile

woulducouldushouldu · 12/10/2021 10:07

UCAS sent on Friday - Egyptology at Oxford. Will know by early November if got through the first round as they will request 2 pieces of work (no exam for us so she will get a break over half term)

kitnkaboodle · 12/10/2021 10:29

@DeadlineLooming the tests are set and administered by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing (yes, the Oxford ones too - the name is confusing). They have a website. Perhaps ask them - they should certainly be at work this week! I guess they're the ones who issue the candidate numbers

goodbyestranger · 12/10/2021 10:42

CosmicComfort there are dozens and dozens of families with several siblings at Oxford. I'd say a subsequent sibling has an advantage on the whole, all other things being equal.

goodbyestranger · 12/10/2021 10:43

Mainly because they've seen their older sibling being perfectly unexceptional at home, so they think well if she or he can get in, standard isn't all its cracked up to be.

Aurea · 12/10/2021 12:34

@deadlinelooming

Sorry if this is not very helpful, but my DS had to organise and book the admissions test himself at a private school 20 miles away from home. His school was not at all involved in organising the test.

I think it's worth chasing with Cambridge Admissions testing as it's better to be safe than sorry.

Did you receive any feedback on the lack of assistance from Oxford from Scotland and the Clydeside project as I have a second DC hoping to apply for comp sci for 2023 from Scotland. He was hoping to have assistance from them.

I hope things work out for your DC. Keep us posted......Smile

Piggywaspushed · 12/10/2021 12:56

In DS's acknowledgement for Selwyn, they said interview invitations go out in November/early December. Rather a large window!

SandyBayley · 12/10/2021 13:02

I already know the Oxford medicine dates as they're published. 10-15 December.

Does anyone know when Bath might start giving out offers?

Does anyone know when Bath might start giving out offers?
I was reading on TSR some got offers as early as November but others not until mid Jan. DD has just submitted her form and Bath is her top choice after Cambridge, heres hoping for a speedy response!

Oxford History is 7-10 December for first interviews and 14/15 for second

Ok panic over. The TSA helpline woman who was fantastic, emailed me today saying they’d found the centre and my son’s registration number. Thank goodness. I have the proof in my sweaty hands. Feel stupid for getting in a panic. I did hide my worry from my son and he knows I’m very particular about never ‘assuming’ anything and needing evidence.

It’s not actually that long to the test is it? Poor DS is head down in old TSA papers.

For those asking about the Clydeside and Oxford for Scotland projects. I don’t know what happened really. We registered our interest months ago via emails. The School tried getting him in touch with Clydeside too. I’m just wondering whether the infrastructure wasn’t there this year because of all the COVID disruption. He did contact a friend of a friend and pick their brain a little but mainly he just looked at the Oxford University website and a load of YouTube videos.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I’ll slink away now… Smile

SandyBayley · 12/10/2021 19:27

That's good news @DeadlineLooming - good to check!

goodbyestranger · 12/10/2021 19:41

Don't feel stupid DeadlineLooming. But try to keep cool from now on or at least carry on with the hiding of not keeping cool! Very best of luck to your DS. PPE is a very good subject for a Scot at the moment I'd have thought!

Hey,

We're in Glasgow too. Sorry I didn't see this thread until now. My son has applied for Oxford for Maths (Manfield). His state school have been great- all sent on Thursday and he's had confirmation back from all universities (St Andrew's/ Glasgow/ Strathclyde/ Edinburgh) too. His Oxford confirmation has a link to register for the MAT. We've not followed the link yet but aim to do it tomorrow when home from few days away. He already knows the MAT is the 3rd of November in St Roch's. There was no panic as they told him once application received he'd have further info. Also, I'm a teacher and teach just up the road from St Roch's so know the situation.

We were the same as you- no response from Oxford for Scotland or Clydeside. We watched many, many videos on Oxford's site and scoured The Student Room and UCAS sites. The wonderful Mumsnetters gave me amazing ideas and advice as I started a thread for help.

I'm glad your mind's at rest now. This is all new to us- the application to Oxford idea came from DS- we both attended uni in Scotland, so very different.

We can only support them and see how it goes. Not many state schoolers from Glasgow apply so I'll be thinking of you. I have one of my own students applying for physics for Cambridge so that's 3 I'm cheering on.Smile

Is your DS S5 or S6? DS is S6 so already has his results- sitting Advanced Highers obviously this year. Even though he got amazing results it all still hinges on the MAT, which is scary I think.

I think it's subject dependent but my friend's DC got an offer from Bath in April! (First choice so a very long anxious wait). I hope your DC hear sooner but it's not automatically bad news if it's later.
