Oxbridge Aspirants 2022...Part 2...applications submitted now the tense wait!

Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Another tandem applicant here elgie. I'd prefer DD to stay in UK but can understand her reasons for applying US, however things have changed last few years on volume everywhere so she'll not be surprised if no offer is forthcoming. Also subject to some financial aid support so even less likely.

nolanscrack · 02/11/2021 10:48

Lots of tandem applicants and a fair number of boys who should be strong Oxbridge candidates not even bothering with an application and just doing US applications,it seems clear that the push at the school by elite US universities is working.

MareofBeasttown · 02/11/2021 11:26

DS taken the day off school to study for his Cambridge ECAA test tomorrow.

cosmiccat · 02/11/2021 12:59

Is it just me or is the whole Oxbridge/Uni application process just one big list of acronyms. My DD is doing TMUA on Thursday but even with her subject of maths I have heard so many different acronyms. I think I have finally got my head round it all. Of course, it doesn't help that much of my info comes from DD who can be a typical teen in her dismissive 'everyone knows this' shrug.

Piggywaspushed · 02/11/2021 13:41

It is like they speak in code at Oxbridge....

margegunderson · 02/11/2021 14:13

Education is general is acronym-heavy. Not just Oxbridge.

cosmiccat · 02/11/2021 15:44

Ironically I work in education but not HE, so maybe its just I haven't learn this new set of acronyms.

Piggywaspushed · 02/11/2021 17:13

I don't think it's just the acronyms though marge. I know teaching has millions but one way Oxbridge maintains an air of exclusivity (which they are, after all trying to work on dispelling) is having esoteric language for things. They don't call kitchens kitchens for example! Some people love these traditions; others find them intimidating. Top public schools can be the same. (cf Boris insisting everyone calls table tennis whiff whaff!)

Puffalicious · 02/11/2021 19:11

MAT tomorrow. Anyone else more on edge than their DC?Confused

DS is off to his dad's as he's within walking distance to the test centre and we're the other side of the city. With COP madness we were nervous about travel issues. (Joe Biden definitely passed me today in his 85 car entourage! He waved and said hiGrin).

I hated saying goodbye tonight. All they can do is their best. Good luck all

Fingers crossed those essays do the job Eightytwenty

Geamhradh · 02/11/2021 21:22

Good luck to the MAT babes tomorrow. 🍀🤞

@Eightytwenty, you're ahead of us- DD just has last one to finish. Panicking about cover sheet as that says "must be an original essay in no way modified" etc. Yet Admissions have (of course) told her she can (and must!) a) translate b) invent an essay specifically to submit.

I'll give them an Oxbridge acronym- FFS seems apt. Grin

margegunderson · 02/11/2021 21:22

Agree that Oxbridge loves its archaic terms - buttery, anyone? Good luck to the MAT crew and the rest of the ATs tomorrow - the first formal exam for this cohort, isn't it?

I was just looking back at last year's thread to see how we all were. I thought I was probably annoyingly mellow, which proved to be the case, but made up for it later by going to panicky pieces over the interviews. Anyway, good luck and a fair wind to all this week's ATters.

Good luck everyone! DD didn't have to do an exam but I remember lots of her friends doing them at this stage. We've learned a huge amount of new terms in a very short space of time - buttery is one of them. Plodge is my current favourite...
VikingNorthUtsire · 03/11/2021 06:01

Good luck to all doing the MAT and other entrance tests today. DS also has an online test for Imperial tomorrow - anyone else?
