Best University History course for a state educated London boy?

Son would like to feel at home on a course with fellow students from a mix of backgrounds where he won't feel out of place for not having a private or grammar education. Oxbridge is already ruled out in his head for obvious reasons.

So where else is less rarified but absolutely top notch for teaching history?

Advice/opinions very welcome.

Have a look at Liverpool. Very up to date modules to choose from and not all exam. Might not be " top notch" but wide ranging and lots of history/ culture in the city too.

Sorry OP, but your post on behalf of your son sounds ridiculous.

If he only wants to meet “people like him” (whatever that means) he won’t get far in life.

There is a whole world out there. A few kids from fee-paying schools in the UK are the least of his worries, frankly. What would he do if he was on a corridor with - gasp - Chinese students or similar? Run home, ‘wah wah, they’re different to me and went to different types of schools...’ what will he do when he enters the job market? Will he conduct a survey on his colleagues school backgrounds and leave if it doesn’t suit him? I hope not. There are allsorts at Oxbridge. It’s 2021. Get a grip.

Also my DC went to selective London independents. In a year group of say 200, maybe 20 odd would go to Oxbridge. So what about the others? Obviously, far more go “elsewhere” and could well be sharing a room or corridor or seminar with your son at Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and just about anywhere you can think of. What is the difference?

Personally i would be very wary of Liverpool over the debacle last summer about grades and the dire industrial relations situation there.

This thread just makes me so cross, i may have posted on it earlier I can't remember but honestly it still makes me cross. University is about diving in , meeting different people, I understand its daunting but the inverted snobbery is depressing
