Warwick Uni (less face to face than last year!)

For those students applying in 2022. Really think twice about applying to Warwick University for any of the Bioscience Courses.

My dd just going into year 2 and she's got less f2f teaching than last year! Only 50 percent of her tutorials are f2f this term, all lectures are online and she only has 6 LABS all year.

There apparent excuse is they have a larger in take this year so more tutorials.

Shocking behaviour from a top 10 University.

Oh dear I have a young cousin about to start biochemistry. I won’t tell him this. Sigh.

Mombie2021 · 15/09/2021 18:59

It’s the same at my University, a Top 20.

I’m 35. I’ve suspended my studies. It’s not good enough. I’m not doing my final year in Microbiology sat at home on my arse, with all lectures online, and half the lab time that I had in my first year.

Oblomov21 · 15/09/2021 19:03

Not surprised. Think it's shocking.

Mombie2021 · 15/09/2021 19:03

I had no lab time last year.

We have a huge BSL2 lab so giving us none last year and half of what we had in our first year (and a quarter of what we should have in final year) when we have lab skills to learn is just unbelievable.

moch · 15/09/2021 19:05

When is someone in authority e.g education sec going to step in and say something? why are all those in authority i.e Universities minister, education sec, bojo all silent about this, what are we missing? across the country and the sector every thing else has opened up and almost back to normal. Why are universities, oh! and GP surgeries different?

Mombie2021 · 15/09/2021 19:12

I don’t know.

If I wanted a Bioscience degree with no lab time/skills attached, I’d have gone for OU.

There’s just no excuses. I have to send my DC to school every day but I can’t sit in a lecture theatre or go to labs? Urgh.

Cleebope2 · 15/09/2021 19:17

Does anyone know how students can ask for fee reimbursements for last year’s pathetic offerings? DD emailed for money refund in February but was told no because online was such ‘high quality’ teaching. Is it worth asking again? Surely paying consumers have a right to demand refunds but how?

Daisysway · 15/09/2021 19:55

Let's face it most students opt for Warwick because of the standard of "education" on the courses... Warwick doesn't offer anything else in terms of a beautiful city or wonderful nightlife... My daughter was wooed by the lovely lecture halls etc. she hasn't been in one yet!

Its Shameful... I hope the students demonstrate this really needs to get in the public eye. The first year's can rent strike but the poor 2nd and 3rd years have already committed to their rental houses.

I went there 3 years ago to do science & it's very much a research-led University. They're not that keen on UG education...

Claraboochuffing · 15/09/2021 20:07

@moch i agree why universities and gps.......why?

Mombie2021 · 15/09/2021 20:13

@Daisysway the brand new BSL2 lab and emphasis on actual lab time/skills is what my heart fell for over the local RG Uni when it came to my degree. I’ve not stepped foot in it since February 2020 and there’s no guarantee that I’d be in it in February 2022 when I would be scheduled to be Angry

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 18/09/2021 16:52

Apparently Warwick came top of the Times uni tables for teaching quality!

Daisysway · 18/09/2021 18:36

Haha well they may well find they will be a lot lower down the table this year. To be fair Warwick (life sciences) did work reasonably hard last year to offer a decent covid education. However, they have already upset the 2nd year cohort with their f2f timetables this forthcoming year so they will certainly come tumbling down on those courses.

I am assuming universities have to run online classes due to the huge numbers of international students who cannot come to the UK. If universities offer online lectures they can still collect the fees from international students. I don’t mind being told that is not the case.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 12:14

.

AvocadoPlant · 19/09/2021 15:42

DD just started at Exeter and has all F2F seminars and tutorials, so it’s not all unis.

LookdeepintotheParka · 21/09/2021 19:07

ALL our teaching is f2f this year so yes, as the pp said this is not all unis.

rydercup · 22/09/2021 02:40

My son at Exeter ad mostly f2f too...there’s even been plenty of rather large induction lectures. I’m about to start at Nottingham...doing a masters and it’s very much a mixture of online and f2f there. Suits me though as a mature student living at home.

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 22/09/2021 07:25

Most international students can come to the UK. Some have to quarantine and either have to travel early or miss the first couple of weeks of in-person teaching.

Universities will be running some things online because they don't have rooms big enough to accommodate the whole cohort at a safe distance (partly owing to overecruitment as a result of another A-Level results fiasco, partly just because they have previously recruited as many students as they could physically fit into the available space). Anything that is delivered face-to-face should also have back-up-plans for when large numbers of students are unable to attend because they have to self-isolate when a flat/housemate tests positive. Students will (justifiably) complain if teaching goes ahead face-to-face when a quarter of them aren't able to attend. There is no chance whatsoever that we will get to Christmas - or even the end of October - without a hefty proportion of students being required to stay at home. If we cram students into lecture theatres when there's no reason to do so, this will happen more quickly. Already 10% of school students are unable to attend school, just 2-3 weeks into term. University students living in halls of residence and student flats/houses will have a more rapid spread.

pourmeanotherglass · 22/09/2021 07:58

Looks like this varies between subjects. DD is doing joint honours ar Warwick, and will have more F2F for philosophy than for maths.

SirSamuelVimes · 22/09/2021 08:04

Yet another reason to stay the hell away from Warwick then. In addition to this www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/education/2021/apr/02/warwick-university-students-stage-sit-in-over-sexual-abuse

By the end of this term, at least in England, all of them will have had the opportunity to get themselves into the 'fully vaccinated' category, though.

Or are some universities imposing rules different from the national ones re self-isolation?

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 22/09/2021 08:29

Yes, they will have had the opportunity. But many are resistant to taking it up. And if they haven't started yet they won't be fully vaccinated until December.

Newgirls · 22/09/2021 08:41

Using international students as an excuse doesn’t wash. At my dd uni they have flown in weeks ago, quarantined etc they were very keen to get here. Has Warwick said what % of students have to be online? Might be worth asking. I think it far more likely they are over-full with U.K. students due to the a level debacle so can’t fit them all in.

Newgirls · 22/09/2021 08:42

Vaccination is very high among uni students. We got an email saying it was 75% have had two jab and 95% have had one and that was 3 weeks ago (Scottish uni).
