Leeds accommodation when should we hear?

First dc off to Leeds in September but I am unclear when we will hear about where he has been given accommodation. He went for cheap and cheerful halls so my big fear is one of the pricey fancy catered ones being allocated which would seriously be hard to afford. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about when we might here and how likely he is to get his actual choice.

Dd went to Leeds but it was her insurance so she had to wait a week or more to hear where she had been allocated.

I would accept whatever is allocated & then apply to move if he is not happy with it - vacancies do come up.

Viciouslybashed · 12/08/2021 12:21

Thank you for your reply. I worry if we accept expensive place he will get too used to it 😂

I've got a son going to Leeds too, @Viciouslybashed. He found the accommodation decision really hard and put down a self-catered hall, in between in cost terms.

As far as I could see most of the expensive halls are generally very oversubscribed so hoping it's unlikely students who don't want them will be reallocated there. DS wrote in the space for additional information that he couldn't afford anything over £x though I don't know if they'll pay attention to that.

You definitely only get one offer, though, take it or leave it, so could try and change later, as @Decorhate said, if you need to.

I'm a bit worried about how overcrowded it all might be, as it sounds as if Leeds may have been taken by surprise by the numbers making their offer grades. It's not usual for them not to enter clearing or adjustment, is it, and apparently they were completely inflexible about missed grades too.

If it's the same as last year, Leeds send out allocations in batches. DS didn't hear until the end of August.

Bakewellisntjustacake · 13/08/2021 06:05

Leeds are so over subscribed this year it might be a while. They're offering £10,000 cash to defer for a year

Kiduknot · 13/08/2021 06:12

Still waiting for ours too. It’s strange when others know exactly where they are going immediately.

I really hope we don’t have to wait till the end of august 😲

LoonvanBoon · 13/08/2021 11:21

@Bakewellisntjustacake, sadly my son isn't doing law or business. He's keen to get going but would totally defer for £10000 and free accommodation Grin

Viciouslybashed · 13/08/2021 11:24

That 10k would be amazing but my son not doing the right course either. I'm just ridiculously impatient then it seems re accommodation, but it is indeed v confusing that other people are all sorted.

DS was in the same situation last tear, it was frustrating but actually made little difference. At the end of the day, they'll take what they're allocated and make the best of it. And still take the same massive carload of unnecessary stuff.

One thing that was helpful was to go to the official halls Facebook page, which in DS's case led everyone to a WhatsApp group, where they all found and got to know their flatmates.

Howdyc · 19/08/2021 12:20

Anyone else not heard yet? Dd knows a lot of people who know where they’re going so is getting a bit nervy

Sunbelievable · 19/08/2021 13:25

@Howdyc have you still not heard? If nothing by lunchtime, I'd phone!

Kiduknot · 19/08/2021 15:50

Ds hasn’t heard yet from his uni. Getting impatient

Howdyc · 19/08/2021 16:14

@Sunbelievable nope haven’t heard but apparently it could be until 10 September. Did your dc get what they wanted? Trying to work out whether it’s the case that dd missed out on her first choice

fluffytdog · 19/08/2021 16:45

Dd is also off to Leeds and waiting to hear back. She's said from the Facebook groups it seems like they're sending out offers in batches for each hall. A lot of central village today. Just a waiting game I think!

LoonvanBoon · 19/08/2021 16:51

My son (DT1) heard on Tuesday and he's been fortunate to get his chosen accommodation (not one of the most oversubscribed ones). We were actually in IKEA when he got the news so it was quite handy as we knew what size bedding we needed. Grin

Sunbelievable · 19/08/2021 17:56

@Howdyc I think they are in batches, so hopefully you'll hear, but yes Dd did get her first choice. She had to accept with four days so theoretically that's why there are waves ?

ShaunaTheSheep · 20/08/2021 09:03

It was batches last year- I remember watching as everyone was getting offers, including DSs first choice Sad.

All his hall's offers went out the same day, and hundreds of them joined a WhatsApp group someone linked on the Facebook page. By lunchtime he'd found flat mates, and they all booked the same moving in day. Been together ever since, and all house sharing this coming year.

PS it wasn't the best of halls so they all bonded over this and determined to make it the best!

Howdyc · 20/08/2021 12:02

@ShaunaTheSheep that’s great to hear- nothing like silver fish infestations to bring people together

akissbeforebed · 20/08/2021 16:38

DD got hers about an hour ago. I think there are still quite a lot who haven't heard yet. Someone on one of her chats said they'd been told it could be the end of August. They're sending out notifications in random batches so as not to crash their systems apparently.

bucksfizzed · 20/08/2021 16:46

My dd just heard, got Lupton (not first choice) but she's finding the group chats and determined to make the best of it. Hope bathroom situation not too bad, flat of 5, one bathroom eek !

Howdyc · 20/08/2021 17:27

@bucksfizzed same situation over here! She was prepared for it though as applying to James Baillie was a risk

ShaunaTheSheep · 20/08/2021 17:50

Lol. In this case it was location - although with lockdowns and online teaching they didn't have to get to campus Smile

bucksfizzed · 20/08/2021 17:50

@Howdyc I suspect many of them will be in the same boat, it seems so oversubscribed this year. Apparently shared bathrooms get cleaned so that's one plus. Hope your daughter not too disappointed... Now off to research what we need to buy. No idea if kitchens have basic utensils eg sieves, tin openers?

Howdyc · 20/08/2021 18:25

@bucksfizzed from what I’ve heard you get a kettle but nothing else- more than happy to be corrected though
