Apologies if I've done this wrong! I seemed to have filled up the last thread, hopefully the abbreviated title is ok!

chopc · 17/06/2021 09:03

So some of us have been corresponding on this thread for almost a year or is it more? Not sure about anyone else but I have images of some of the posters ........... I will share my thoughts if everyone agrees to take it with a pinch of salt and not get offended .............

chopc · 17/06/2021 09:04

Images as in in my mind ....... no idea what you look like

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/06/2021 09:33

Go for it chopc - I am not offended by anything, ever Grin.

I know we have all moved on, but I have been following the Telegraphs analysis of offers to Oxbridge colleges this week, they have generated tables for all colleges, and highlighted the top ten schools for offers, for each. In summary the same top two or three elite schools continue to over-represented, and also one or two selected grammars, and London state schools, and increasingly offers are also being made to under-represented groups. This would seem to indicate, as we have often suspected, that the largest group of schools in the middle will be the ones missing out on the offers.

I'm happy with that. I absolutely adore sheep Grin.

@BigWoollyJumpers

That article is behind a paywall, are you allowed to cut and paste ?

chopc · 17/06/2021 19:41

Peeps you can now book vaccinations for all over 18's through the nhs booking app

MidLifeCrisis007 · 17/06/2021 20:08

That's wonderful to hear.

On a related note, many of our vaccine centres are screaming out for volunteers. If you have a few hours to spare each week (shifts are typically 3-6 hours depending on the individual centre), please do sign up to help on the GoodSam app.

It's really fulfilling and sociable, even if some of the jobs are a little mundane. We are only going to escape this shit show when nearly all of us are vaccinated, so please do help accelerate the process if you have a few hours to spare each week!

LoonvanBoon · 17/06/2021 20:21

Thank you, @chopc! The site's still saying 21+ but is indeed letting my two book 1st and 2nd jabs (2nd ones mid September) as I write. Smile

chopc · 17/06/2021 20:33

@LoonvanBoon if you choose a different location there may be earlier appointments

LoonvanBoon · 17/06/2021 21:01

Oh I thought that was quite good for the 2nd jabs, @chopc, so they'll be double jabbed before university starts. The 1st ones are in a couple of weeks. Is there a smaller gap between 1st and 2nd where you are?

@BigWoollyJumpers I also read that article. It angers me when you know that the dice are still weighted, it is like the odds are 5-1 but for you they are 8-1.

Ds2 is in year 10, he is unsure if he will do the whole Oxbridge route and he is academically higher than Ds1 was at this stage.

In good news we have just booked both Ds1's jabs, he is still asleep and thanks to BigWoolly for the heads up as we were watching for it. It is still saying 21 and over but we put his NHS number in and both jabs are booked, June and August at our doctors, it offered us another venue too. He will wake up to an email saying you are booked in Grin

Ds had 20% of his final grade based on previous assessment work and they took the top 5 results from that. They have now come back and said that if your mock grade was higher they will substitute an assessment grade for that one.

Ds and I are also on the final season of Lost (no spoilers please) it has been at times a slog but we are determined to see it to the end. Dh and I had to quit watching Lost when Ds2 was born as he was a very poorly baby but now a very healthy 15 year old. Ds has a whole list of films to watch together but we are prioritising Lost. We did watch Amelie the other day.

Is anyone else watching anything with their children?

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 18/06/2021 06:44

I meant for Ds being in a Northern state sixth form, the odds are massively stacked against him.

chopc · 18/06/2021 07:22

I think the odds will be in favour @OnTheBenchOfDoom due to widening participation ?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/06/2021 07:25

I'm not sure the dice are so unfairly weighted in favour of certain schools. According to a previous Mumsnet thread, Westminster looks for a CAT test score of around 135+ at 11, which they suggest is the top 2% academically. Surely a non selective (state or private) school would expect a more normal CAT score distribution with only the odd student with that level (ie 135 or above) of intelligence.

Some might say Westminster is hard done by by not getting 90% of its students into Oxbridge. They are all EXCEPTIONALLY bright kids!

chopc · 18/06/2021 07:27

@LoonvanBoon I think gap is now 8weeks. If we were going to same places it would have been in sept but I put a diff location in and got Aug

chopc · 18/06/2021 07:31

Yep I second @MidLifeCrisis007

Like in life, entry to Oxbridge is unfortunately not just on merit, due to the quotas etc . I used to think if you were good enough and better than the rest, you will get in. However I think there are so many other factors too so .........

chopc · 18/06/2021 07:50

@OnTheBenchOfDoom the only thing we follow together at the moment is the football...... the household is still busy .....
Maybe we will start another series once the other two also finishes school for the year
