Anyone's DC not heard from all their choices? Is this normal?

DS applied in November. Got 4x offers v quickly but still waiting for offer/rejection from his no.1 choice. They emailed him in November asking him about his choice of subjects which he replied to. Then they emailed again asking if he was a "private" student (standard email to everyone apparently). Again he replied. I know they have until May to send out offers but seems a long time especially when it is holding up his firm/insurance choices.

Just wondered if this is the case for others?

@KittyMcKitty mine pulled out of Bristol 2 weeks ago. Knew he didn’t want the politics and social policy, the IR was the priority so accepted another RG uni. Think it was the right thing for him

KittyMcKitty · 02/04/2021 17:17

@Vierty pleased your ds sorted. Mine says he wouldn’t have taken Pol & soc Pol above his existing offers so we’ll wait and see whether Phil & Pol offer - he’s “only” predicted AAA so I imagine he’s very much bottom of the pile! If they don’t offer (and maybe even if they do) then he’s keen on the offers he has - the Manchester Phil & Pol looks to offer a great deal of flexibility. We shall see 😀

llytigrepden · 03/04/2021 13:01

Still no news for DS. Not hearing is building up false hope (for me not him - he's given up hoping) I fear. Would just be nice to know either way.

Wimbledon
Edinburgh

DC still waiting. But Edinburgh sent email to say "sorry for the wait" Smile
Knew Scottish universities sometimes take longer so expecting to wait.

Why would an RG University reduce their offer twice for a course?
Not many applying for that course?
Ds1 got offered a grade lower than specified (AAB) then another grade lower (ABB) if he firmed...
He is a good candidate (AAA predicted) and works very hard but...
Seems odd!

Is it Nottingham? They used to use conditional unconditionals as a recruiting tactic and thus some people would choose them purely for that reason. My guess is (if it is Nottingham you are referring to) I the absence of those (which have been very much frowned on and are not supposed to be used any more ) is that not as many people are forming them as usual and they need to get bums on seats.
SeasonFinale · 03/04/2021 21:06

*forming = firming which I did type and even selected twice!! Bloody phone

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6675712

If there is one in there, it will be somewhere after page 7, but there is a comment from one poster that the thread isn't really active enough for one.

All the Cardiff threads are here:

wantmorenow · 05/04/2021 11:32

Thank you. I did find that one but can see it doesn't provide much info. Think it may be a no for him in time though.

Really hope UK makes moves to applications etc after results. This system is so poor.

MarchingFrogs · 05/04/2021 12:06

The TSR forum bit is just like the bit of MN and various other sites - just a chat area for interested groups. If someone wants to set up a facility for entering details of applications and decisions, they are free to do so and publish that and any spreadsheet that they create from it, but it's not a requirement of chatting about a university / course that someone does that and even if the TSR 'official' volunteers took on the task of setting one up for every university each year, it can hardly be a requirement to enter one's details on it (and as the poster pointed out, it's not really worth it on a quiet thread - anyone can set up.an account, 'watch a thread and therefore get a notification when there is a new post and keep an eye on offers etc that way).

The 'official bit in titles is mainly just to try to keep posts on a given topical subject together, rather than have dozens of people set up individual, Has anyone got an offer from University X for course Y? type threads.

jgw1 · 05/04/2021 21:04

A university that is putting undue pressure on students to decide before the 10th June deadline who to put as their firm or insurance choice will be in breach of the rules they have all agreed to. Lowering the offer if they firm sooner would certainly count as such. Some are in trouble for suggesting that students who firm now would get better accomodation.

MarchingFrogs · 14/04/2021 09:29

Someone has now set up a log and spreadsheet on the tsr thread - the links are on p.50, post #994.

DD just got an offer from UCL yesterday she applied in October and had an interview in Feb so they kept her waiting.

@Howmercurialislife

Would you rather that universities consider carefully who would be best suited to their courses as UCL do, or rather the approach that some universities take that is to make everyone who applies an offer?
llytigrepden · 17/04/2021 12:45

Howmercurialislife that is good news!

PresentingPercy · 17/04/2021 12:52

The lower tariff and less popular courses can make offers quickly - and these courses go into clearing, so you get a fairly clear view of which universities and courses are less popular.

This year is clearly problematic. Brilliantly qualified candidates are not getting into the courses they want. They then trade down. Their acceptance will affect other offers. Eg an Oxbridge candidate who didn’t get in will accept Durham, Bristol, UCL etc. This year it’s not after results really, is it? There are not meaningful exams and predictions should be more accurate. The universities do have the gcse results for candidates but will also have deferrals from last year too. There is no suggestion overseas applicants have faded away and some universities have seen big rises in applications.

Yes. In normal circumstances, decisions are very late. However I do feel that all applicants have been considered fairly. Which is good.

Howmercurialislife · 17/04/2021 15:47

@jgw1 what a silly question, of course I am happy that each application is considered on its individual merits and offered or rejected accordingly. However when she had her interview in Feb they said it would be a week or two til she got a decision.

That's over 2 months ago so as I said, they kept her waiting.

Howmercurialislife · 17/04/2021 15:48

@llytigrepden thank you.

Judging from comments on the student room lots of offers went out yesterday.

Is your DS still waiting to hear?

PresentingPercy · 17/04/2021 17:36

A few years ago, my DD2 had an interview in Feb and still had not heard on 30 April. Brighton. Just useless.

llytigrepden · 17/04/2021 18:43

Howmercurialislife yes DS is still waiting. Only a month to go until they have to reply!

I just realised recently that DS has been given at least one contextual offer - do these usually arrive quite late does anyone know?

OP posts:
minniemomo · 17/04/2021 18:48

Durham are often late

PresentingPercy · 18/04/2021 06:42

No. They arrive when others do. If DS has several offers I assume he can make a choice from what he has?

llytigrepden · 19/04/2021 14:04

PresentingPercy yes he can do that but assuming he hasn't heard from his number one choice because they haven't rejected him (yet) he's going to wait until he hears from them, hopefully with an offer.

OP posts:
jgw1 · 19/04/2021 14:16

He can, in order to do so he would have to withdraw from those universities that he has not heard from. It is fairly simple to do on UCAS Track. I have had several students do so this year, as they have offers from the universities they most want to go to, so the others are irrelevant. I would not read anything into universities being slow to respond other than that they are being careful with who they choose to make offers to. Universities have until 20th May to make offers or reject students who applied before the end of January equal consideration deadline and students have until 10th June to decide, so there really is no rush.
