Here is the new thread

And at just 18 it’s difficult trying to make independent decisions whilst still being swayed by your parents. Dd and I are very close and I know she values my opinion. But then I worry a pig giving her the wrong advice!

But the reality is that other than the 2 music colleges the majority of the students are not at Indies. Do the independent students ever say they don't want to go there because it's got too many state school kids. Imagine the outcry if they did!

Anyway some LSE are on their way!

LoonvanBoon · 24/03/2021 12:34

Quite surprised to see Newcastle in that list, bigwoollyjumpers, though I'm not sure why. Both my boys applied there, though it's not in either of their top three, and both were given unconditional offers within a week or so, which at least made them feel wanted!

bend, so glad your daughter's feeling a bit better today. Exeter does sound lovely - wish it wasn't so very, very far away from us.

DT2 had the same feedback sentence as your DD - PS weaker than other candidates. In his case it might refer to the lack of extracurricular information. DT1 didn't include any either: both were told confidently by their schools that 'top' universities don't want it these days. I only found out later, probably on here, that Durham does still set store by it. Of course it might just be something Durham says when it can't plausibly claim that applicants' grades aren't strong enough.

DT1 is expecting a Durham rejection now, as his profile is so similar to DT2'S and his course just as competitive. Hearing of this spate of rejections of really well qualified candidates is in some ways helping to prepare him and even preemptively to soften the blow.

He insists he'll be happy to go to Leeds, or his other choices for that matter. So I'm less worried than I was about how he'll manage another rejection. He thinks maybe he'd prefer to be in a city anyway. Basically he's desperate to start the student experience, especially after the last year, and tbf probably less concerned than I am about the perceived status of different universities.

goodbyestranger · 24/03/2021 12:35

I second good for her - especially only hours after a major disappointment.

My niece went to Exeter and her first year accommodation was palatial (after that, she lived out).

My DC only didn't apply to Exeter because we live on the beach about forty minutes away and Exeter is the nearest town - they know it too well. But life here is very good, I can vouch for that.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/03/2021 12:40

@LoonvanBoon I wish your DT1 really good luck for Durham. Yes it’s good to be realistic but he’s still in the running and you never know! I’m glad he’s got other choices he is happy with. I can’t imagine the stress you must be under with twins applying!

jano69 · 24/03/2021 12:41

I love this thread!

Well done to The Bend Family for showing incredible optimism and resilience.

Many of our dc who would in previous years had found each other in O or C will now find like minded students at Exeter, Bristol, LSE, Durham and St A's etc. They will still be the same bright driven young adults but on a different trajectory due to a pandemic and a change in Oxbridge policy.

I read a really interesting article (The Times) to say that these two factors will drive up standards across British universities in the long term and I think I'm already seeing the early evidence in our dc's redirections to prove that theory.

jano69 · 24/03/2021 12:49

and by the way, I absolutely loved Exeter when we visited it in Summer 2019. It was a great campus with Exeter city centre and Cathedral just a few minutes away. The accommodation we viewed was great - double beds with ensuites. It even had an outdoor swimming pool which really impressed me. Everything you need on site including an array of pubs and coffee shops. Everyone I know at Exeter can't talk highly enough or it.

SATSmadness · 24/03/2021 12:56

@jano69

Did they mean teaching standards or just an opinion on the calibre of graduates turned out ?

jano69 · 24/03/2021 13:10

@SATSmadness The article was called "The Times view on more state school pupils at top universities: Oxbridge Blues".

Many dc at selective and partially selective state schools also find themselves in this pool.

Longtimenewsee · 24/03/2021 13:52

Glad your Dd is a bit brighter today @bendmeoverbackwards.

chopc · 24/03/2021 14:03

Glad your DD is feeling better @bendmeoverbackwards

Yeah can't win with DC sometimes. I have long since decided I will endeavour to do what I feel is best and if I am wrong, I'll, apologise but if they are unappreciative, it's on them

Which side jano69? I haven't read the article because of the paywall. You mean they're getting fewer offers than historically?

quest1on · 24/03/2021 14:17

bend - you sound like such a great mum and I know what you mean about being in the firing line!

Season - let me know if you see any LSE Geography offers. Just checked TSR - there’s a few for Economics and Law today, as there were yesterday. Those are massive courses there, I think. I only saw one for Geography and it was contextual - he had A*AA predicted, but they offered him AAB! I think this is the very first year LSE are making contextual offers. The boy had no 8s/9s and about half his GCSE grades at 5s and 6s too (anyone who gets an offer on the LSE thread instantly gets asked “What are your stats?” Grin). This boy also had an Oxford offer (but I guess he may have had mitigating circumstances as well, you can never tell). Or his PS was beyond amazing, or something.

Apart from that, every candidate for every course on the LSE thread seems to have pretty much all 9s/8s and A* predictions, or the max in IB or other international equivalents, so decisions must be very marginal at LSE too, with not even interviews as part of the process.

Yes, although the article focuses on the independent sector. My point is that these students, including those from selective state schools like bend's dd and others on this thread, are going to other universities and in doing so, driving up standards across the board.
goodbyestranger · 24/03/2021 14:49

That's what I assumed you meant jano69 - ours is a state selective.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 24/03/2021 16:17

DS has got his 6th choice college at Durham. Ironically the same college he was allocated to last year.

I wonder if they twigged that he was an accidental re-applicant?!

SeasonFinale · 24/03/2021 16:21

Are they driving standards up though? Oxbridge always has a finite number of places so bright students have always ended up elsewhere every year.

chopc · 24/03/2021 16:50

@SeasonFinale I think the demographic of Oxbridge is changing due to widening participation hence people who may have gotten a place a couple of years ago may not get in and the reason won't be due to their caliber

On other threads I heard that employers are also looking outside the elite universities for their recruitment.

So maybe if our DC couldn't get a place at Oxbridge they should look outside Russel Group universities? Or those ranked in the bottom half?

For me I value the experience my DS will get at University so this won't influence his decision of where he should study . However, I will be conscious that DS will probably have to work that little bit harder to get the job or placement he wants.

Indeed. DD1's Oxford degree was definitely a hindrance in some of her graduate applications. Charities, BBC, Theatre and Arts, Pharma, Civil Service (surprisingly) all seemed to have an anti-bias. The only graduate interview she got was with MI5, got down to the last handful too. In the end she got a fab job with a small company (not on the grad run) started by a female Oxbridge grad, who actively recruits female (yay) STEM graduates. You have to find your niche, and maybe go a bit off-piste.

chopc · 24/03/2021 17:11

@BigWoollyJumpers do you mind if I ask what she studied at Oxford and what she is doing now?

OP posts:
chopc · 24/03/2021 17:13

DS is leaning towards law at the moment but I am conscious that I don't know about all the possible careers and nor does he

Would like to be more informed for my second DS who is interested in both STEM and Humanities

OP posts:
IrmaFayLear · 24/03/2021 17:17

I agree with that @BigWoollyJumpers . Ds gave up with any media or civil service. There seems to be rank hostility towards a certain demographic.

SeasonFinale · 24/03/2021 17:19

So what if the demographic is changing though? The point I was making is that there have always been a limited number of places for Oxbridge courses so some equally bright students did not get a place and went elsewhere (whatever their background).

I am talking academically elite rather than "elite by virtue of their purported class". There have always been Oxbridge calibre students at other universities. It is just that wp has opened Oxbridge to students of that calibre who may not have considered it or accessed it before.
