Hopefully this is in the right place?

@Chocomel hmmm, I don’t know anything about life at Oxbridge so can’t comment on that but I wonder why the school changed their mind? Is it different teachers now giving input?

I would trust the Oxford admissions tutors who I hope are well able to suss when an applicant isn’t suitable. No?

Beetlesand · 14/01/2021 21:47

That would actually piss me off no end @Chocomel. Have you asked for clarification from the school? Do you think they are just trying to give him a kick up the rear as they sense he may have taken his foot off the pedal in the last few weeks? ( tbh who can blame these kids?! - it’s been so full on!)

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 21:52
**@mikeandike* @bendmeoverbackwards* why don’t you wait till some of us Cambridge crew join you? We can all stick together till the split happens for everyone? A fair chunk of us will need the benefit of your experience 2 weeks on?
Yes good idea. Such a great thread, very glad for the support.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 21:54

@Chocomel that’s terrible of the school, did they not say this when he was applying? Where else does he have offers from?

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 21:57

So today dd is now keen on Durham! However she doesn’t have an offer yet and I’m worried she’s getting her hopes up again. How competitive is Durham? I wish I knew what her chances are there.

BigWoollyJumpers · 14/01/2021 22:17

DD really putting lots of effort into researching Exeter. She has found her accommodation, bloody expensive, way more than Oxford 😱, but also virtual toured the campus, lots of green spaces, which is nice, and city in detail. I have been doing the same.

So she is holding up well, and school have been amazing. All her teachers, and others in the 6th form, have contacted her personally to support, which is lovely.

Sad to report DM's husband, and Grandad to my girls, passed away from Covid this morning, and DM continues to be really unwell. What a week it's been.

@DeRigueurMortis

It's a hard fact to face but the truth is that the vast majority of children that apply to Oxbridge will not get an offer.

To be in a position to apply they are by definition in the top academic cohort and extremely motivated.

In short there is something "special" about all of them (indeed many special things).

It's why every parent on this forum will have a story about how much work they've put in, how other people have noted how exceptional they are and how we, as parents know how brilliant they are.

Not all those children will be privileged in socio/economic terms or blessed with an abundance of charisma. Some will be disadvantaged in numerous ways, such as acute shyness, MH diagnosis or physical/hidden disabilities.

I've no answer for what the magic X factor is for those who get offers vs those who don't. These threads (over the years) are awash with applicants with what appear to have "super stellar" credentials (even in context of the high standards of the company they are in) and had supposedly good interviews fail to get an offer.

A poster on a previous thread said (and I paraphrase) that her child got based on GCSE and A Level grades that might come as a surprise to some posters, but when there was told that they were all selected for their potential.

Maybe that's the crux of it?

All these children are operating at a high level in academic terms, but what they are trying to unearth are those that they feel are not "just" clever and the beneficiaries of a good education, hard work and obviously self motivated.

I don't know how they identify that "potential" and I'm sure every parent on here will "see" that in their own child (and the child in themselves).

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that that whilst re-direction feels deeply personal I'm not sure it is.

It's more like a lottery, in the sense the numbers you pick are akin to the the course and college they applied for (and how many did the same), who conducted the interview, what questions were asked the various targets set for widening participation and oh yes the joys of less offers in the COVID world etc.

Any one of things not quite working out could mean the difference between an offer or not.

I'm assuming my DS will be redirected on the 25th not because he isn't Cambridge material.

Not because he isn't clever as hell (his head of maths said he was the most gifted mathematician he'd taught in 25 years).

Not because he hasn't worked hard and pushed himself re: super curricular activities

Not because he's incredibly shy and was super stressed about his interview and thinks it impacted his performance.

But because the probability of an offer despite all the above is very low and all the statements above can be attributed to many, many other applicants.

It's incredibly tough and Thanks to all who are struggling to process redirection.

@sammyjoanne Lancaster is DS's second (enthusiastic) choice and he's got a good offer from them so really pleased to hear your feedback.

Thank you for such a balanced post @DeRigueurMortis, you're absolutely right of course. DD2 was redirected (I don't know why this is the preferred term here rather than just plain "rejected"?) from Oxford this week.

Her heart was always set on UCL (where she has an offer), so she's not too cut up about the Oxford decision. I'm glad that she's not so disappointed, and reading your post just reminds me of the odds of making the application in the first place.

Pleased to hear about others' good news, I know your kids will have worked hard for their applications and interviews. Just as those kids who have been redirected did too, I share your parental disappointment and (maybe?) frustration that our kid wasn't one of the chosen ones this year.

Apologies for the extremely long post!

Crikeyblimey · 14/01/2021 22:23

@BigWoollyJumpers that’s such sad news. Hope you’re all doing ok xx

Glad your dad is holding up well.

TottiePlantagenet · 14/01/2021 22:26

@BigWoollyJumpers I'm sorry for your loss, even though it may be of no comfort coming from an Internet stranger Flowers

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 22:28

@BigWoollyJumpers so sorry to hear of your loss, very sad news

DeRigueurMortis · 14/01/2021 22:30

BigW such sad news. I'm so sorry for your loss Thanks

Chocomel · 14/01/2021 22:32

@Tenpastseven one teacher has said exactly what you have - if Oxford think he's a good fit, then that's all I need to know.

But I'm still worried I hope that it's like you say @Beetlesand - he probably does need a kick in the pants to get back to working. The Christmas holidays absolutely were a holiday for him, and much needed. Maybe those teachers are worried he'll not work now that he doesn't need the subject results. I think it's a little unfair to assume a good student would drop the ball now.

@BigWJ sorry to hear your sad news 💐

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/01/2021 22:57

I think Durham might be a bit grim for those who don’t already have offers (I think your DC is history?). A good slab of places were taken by last year’s overspill, and I suspect that D will have been one of the most hard hit by the CAG thing (they massively over offer normally, using the A*AA to cut the numbers down). Then they seem to have been making a lot of post qualification, international and generous contextual offers through last term (I simply don’t understand why these are done before the main body of offers). As a result, the bulk of the weight of any reduction in number of offers in response to the comments last last term about grade distraction and, possibly more significantly, the exam cancellation and grade uncertainty will be falling on the remaining applicants. I suspect that the hit rate for those still waiting could be well down on usual.

It’s just not a great year to be applying.

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/01/2021 22:59

Sorry, last post was meant to reference @bendmeoverbackwards

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/01/2021 23:00

@BigWoollyJumpers. So sorry for your loss.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 23:03

Oh dear that doesn’t sound hopeful at all. If she hasn’t had an offer yet (yes it’s History), is it unlikely now? I’ve seen a lot offers from Durham on this thread.

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 23:06

Is anyone else still waiting for Durham?

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/01/2021 23:11

When’s the deadline universities have to respond by? I hope dd isn’t going to have to deal with more disappointment.

Revengeofthepangolins · 14/01/2021 23:20

@bendmeoverbackwards Traditionally, the standard humanities Durham offers tended to mostly come out after the UCAS deadline, although the trickle can start around now. English and history in particular. Lots of other subjects, especially sciences tend to start earlier.
