@juicy0 thanks, yes he drive me mad, I know he has MH issues but he’s certainly not doing my MH any good either as I can’t help but worry about him.
I’m all for our DC doing their own thing, becoming independent etc but I think they need to touch base every now and then. If I thought he was fine, having a good time I wouldn’t worry, I don’t speak to my other DS all the time, but this behaviour is just odd, me chasing after him all the time, especially as I know full well that his phone is never more than 1m away from his hand 🤣
Have to just apply the old saying ‘no news is good news’! Thankfully I’m keeping busy here, lots to sort out and it’s lovely being in London where I have old friends.
I’m going out tonight and intend to drink several large glasses of wine 😊

Itscoldouthere · 02/06/2021 15:28

@juicy0 sorry didn’t see your other post, that’s a real shame for your DD, it’s so tricky if you aren’t happy in your house and even worse if she feels bullied.
I’m sure there will be rooms around, so much uncertainty these days I’m sure a few will have dropped out or deferred.
We are probably going to have to try to find someone to take over DS room, but it won’t be till we complete on the house in London and I have no idea how long that might be but don’t think it’s will be before the end of September. DS wants to stay there but it’s not a financially viable option unless he finds a job.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/06/2021 16:01

Sorry to hear your DD has been having issues @juicy0. Bullying is such a hard thing to deal with.

Well done with finding a house so quickly @Itscoldouthere. Is your DS2 okay with moving away from Norwich?

On the subject of DC keeping in touch, DS doesn't really do much in the way of communicating unless he wants something.

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 02/06/2021 16:14

Sorry to from those with problems.

Mine still doesn't communicate much. But I'm used to it now. He meets DH every other Sunday for clay pigeon shooting, last Sunday dh asked him if he wanted to come home for dinner. He did, then decided to stay the night, he had no toothbrush and no clean pants. So will make sure there are some here in future for quick visits...I found the pair dirty he was wearing on the bedroom floor inside out...typical boys!

Ds2 has a driving lesson in Norwich Friday as that is where he test will be. I don't know why I didn't think of that before (he currently spends an hour
and half of his driving lesson driving to Norwich and back) so we are using ds1's student house as a pick up point, so I'll see ds1 Friday too. We might go for a walk around UEA. Sadly I could only get one lesson actually in Norwich, it's half term so a few gaps. But it'll be good to see round ds's house properly. I've not really seen it, only his room briefly.

Itscoldouthere · 02/06/2021 16:26

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 no my DS wants to stay in Norwich with his flat mates, but it will all come down to how his MH is and if he’s making any progress in anything.
It’s going to be expensive for him to stay there as he will have to pay council tax which is expensive on a house for 8.
I don’t want to take away his independence but we can’t afford to pay everything if he’s just sitting in his room, as I don’t think he will go back to his biology course in 2022 (but I’d happily be proved wrong).
That’s so funny @icanbewhatiwant a year in you finally get to see his house.
I know these young adults don’t really want us too involved in their lives anymore, unless they need something, in our case usually £££ 😂🙄

boys3 · 02/06/2021 17:34

that's tough for your DD @juicy0. Still she's been decisive. DS2 left it all the fairly last minute for his current accommodation - although that did mean he didn't start paying rent until start of September, and it seems like he did have plenty of choice. He shares or rather shared with three finalists; two never made it back, and the other is all done now so heading home shortly. So just him in the house - the lease runs until the end of July, and more importantly one of the others is the main leaseholder. Not yet sure when he plans to return "home"; but at least he has next academic year's house sorted. We caught up with him last Sunday; whilst he may have been keen to head into the city I though a nice garden centre coffee shop out in the fresh air was a preferable choice; plus allowed a drive by of where he is living next year. Ended up in Wymondham (?). Very pleasant; and a nice looking Waitrose too. :)

@Itscoldouthere; enjoy the wine; sounds like you more than deserve it.

juicy0 · 02/06/2021 17:55

@boys3 glad your DS is all sorted for next year, it would be better for DD to have arrangements in place but hopefully something will come up.
Wymondham is nice and if you find yourself there again I recommend The Green Dragon for drinks and a bite to eat. The Waitrose is a good one, I used to work just down the road from there.

juicy0 · 02/06/2021 18:28

If any of your DC are looking for work over the summer there are plenty of opportunities currently being advertised within easy commute of UEA. Lots of hospitality roles in pubs and restaurants as well as supermarkets etc.
DD has worked at the su bar for the last two years and really enjoys it. She's met lots of people and is looking forward to seeing some
live music whilst working when they return in September. She was lucky to be furloughed through lockdown too!

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 06/06/2021 16:00

Just been told about this thread. Has anyone done Economics on this thread? My DD trying to choose between UEA and Cardiff for her first choice- so tough as she loves them both!! Any advice welcome 🙂

GoldenRuby · 06/06/2021 16:17

Hi @Allfurcoatandnoknickers, welcome! My DS isn't doing economics, but he has just finished his 2nd year and absolutely loves UEA. He much preferred campus unis to non-campus, and in the warm weather the area by the lake seems a very popular hang out. Lots of sports clubs to join if that is his thing.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 06/06/2021 17:04

Thanks- yes she’s hoping to join some clubs. She’s seen her brother graduate having not done that at all at Uni- he now regrets that and has said that to her!!

GoldenRuby · 06/06/2021 19:01

@Allfurcoatandnoknickers that's great. Wherever she goes that is a good way to make friends.

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 06/06/2021 19:22

Very exciting! DD has chosen UEA and we could now do with some tips for accommodation 😂

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/06/2021 19:45

That's great news @Allfurcoatandnoknickers. Your DD will have a ball. How exciting!

The Ziggs are iconic (and listed buildings). Relatively cheap compared with other options but there's something to suit all budgets. I think we've got posters with DC who rented in the full range of options in Year 1 on here. DC and DN both opted for single rooms in Ziggs (which overlook the Broad (lake).

OP posts:
GoldenRuby · 06/06/2021 19:49

@Allfurcoatandnoknickers my DS was in the Village (en-suite plus) in his first year. Cheaper than campus en-suite but only just off campus, and as he spends most of his time at the sports park it was a good location for him. He had 8 in his flat and luckily they gelled well. He liked the fact that they had a proper oven in the kitchen - some of the other accommodations had a more basic combi thing, which would have made flat roast chicken dinners harder!

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 06/06/2021 20:05

Thanks- going to have a good look!

boys3 · 06/06/2021 20:18

@Allfurcoatandnoknickers great choice by your DD.

UEA is GREAT!!!!!!

DS2 was in Hickling Barton in year 1. Huge, very well equipped kitchen and socialising area. Plus, not 100% convinced it was the real clincher for him, it has its own launderette. Smile

He really likes Norwich as a, relatively smaller (and probably far safer than many) city. From the experiences on this thread second year and beyond accommodation options seem relatively plentiful and well priced.

sluj · 07/06/2021 08:42

"Oh UEA is wonderful...."

My first DS was in the Village but regrets that choice as his flat was full of people who had chosen quiet accommodation or were on shift placements so consequently he never saw anyone. That was a problem with the people in his flat though and not the accommodation. He did all his socialising on campus with course mates, rugby and music societies.
2nd DS chose the Ziggs and loved it. Very sociable, big rooms and right in the middle of everything. He had to share toilet facilities but never had a problem. He is glad he chose to live in the buildings so famously associated with UEA.
There are you tube tours of the rooms available which are very helpful.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/06/2021 09:39

I was a bit Hmm and disillusioned to see on the other thread (Cardiff vs UEA), that a poster seemed so dismissive of UEA because it's not a Russell Group university (with the implication that our DC wouldn't stand a chance in the competitive graduate jobs market). Whatever happened to going to the university that feels right and which offers the course you like best? It's an attitude that gave me an impression of where the 'sharp elbowed' students of today mentality (mentioned in our more general current Year 2 uni students thread) may have orginated!

OP posts:
sluj · 07/06/2021 10:28

Russel Group is a load of old self-perpetuating, self acclaimed tosh and we all know that.Smile
I went to Lancaster which is generally top 10 in every ranking but not Russell Group either!

sluj · 07/06/2021 10:31

Russell with 2 x Ls

boys3 · 07/06/2021 13:08

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 that's always the risk with the higher ed threads - posters whose educational attainment is inversely proportional to the level of education being discussed.

Just imagine had the founders met at some mid point - Sandbach Services (Northbound) Group hasn't got the quite the same marketing cachet. Grin

Still UEA in pretty good company - Bath; Loughborough; Lancaster; St. Andrews - none of those in the RG; and that quite how Harvard; MIT; CalTech etc manage without it is quite beyond me. :)

I seemed to have opened a can of proverbial worms on the other thread. Our DS graduated a couple of years ago so we're not new to all of this Uni stuff. Our DS's girlfriend has been at UEA and loved it. She showed us round and her love of Norwich and the Uni were infectious. I would never be dismissive of any Uni or education - it's horses for courses - Cardiff would probably not have been right for her but it was her choice to make and I really think she's made an excellent choice!

Th Kimpton Fitzroy London Group doesn't sound too bad, though...? Perhaps they should update themselvesGrin.

You do make me laugh (and generally brighten up the day!).
