I told my mum DS had an interview and she just carried in talking about the weather Confused. Her and DF couldn’t care less (they are from another country and think we are all OTT). If I do so much as buy a coffee out, apparently this is “showing off.”

Sorry to hear that quest1on, it must depend on the other country: my Dad was a Pole, and very excitable about all sorts of stuff. Perhaps you're from a generally cooler climate.

You'll just have to rely on MN for congrats on behalf of your DS!

My parents are dead and the ILs, though broadly supportive, would be happier with the security of a nice little apprenticeship (their words). I know my Dad especially would have been thrilled at the thought of a grandchild even being in a position to consider Oxford.

My parents are very (somewhat over?) interested in DS' application for Oxford and always want an update during weekly phone calls.

DH's father (died 22 years ago) would have been very pleased to see DS applying, although I'm sure he would have preferred Cambridge (where he went).

My parents are fairly odd, to be fair, by any nation’s standards. I only got to uni because of a certain teacher in our village who went above and beyond. The DPs were not keen because where I’m from was very basic (slightly better these days). My kids have been very lucky, but I do appreciate the pressures they are all under (in a different way).

Congratulations @Crikeyblimey
@quest1on possibly your parents are really pleased but they just wouldn’t show it? It’s really sad when you want to share this with your family but it can be a minefield!

Yay to my fellow MML-hopeful @Crikeyblimey.

Poor DD1 got the following from my DM (Italian) on her Oxford place:

Cambridge is nicer
Pity you didn't do medicine (she did Biomed)
University is overrated, university of life is much better, look at me
And on graduating with her first:
I thought you would come out a communist having learnt a bit about about life, pity.

This from a woman who was brought up with servants, governesses, tied peasants on the land, and never worked in her life. I blame Mussolini, of whom she was a great admirer!

I think I managed to post on Thread 1 and missed the rest...

DD has an invitation to interview (with pre-interview assessment next week).

On to the next hurdle (she has applied to one of the courses with the very lowest rate of acceptance per applicant, so not holding my breath).

Great news that so many DCs are hearing! No news yet either way -lots of stress in this house.

DeRigueurMortis · 26/11/2020 01:36

@cantkeepawayforever many congratulations on your DD's interview.

Quite sad on the other hand to hear the stories of lack of support from GP's - though I'm sure all the parents are more than making up for it.

Thankfully my DP's (and PIL) could not be more sensitive to the situation, in that they are being supportive but not OTT and reinforcing that even getting this far is a good achievement and if it doesn't work out they are as proud as punch regardless (they're also at our request keeping his application to themselves so as not to add further pressure).

We feel very lucky that he's got a solid "second" offer he really rates and good family support.

DS got email with interview offer for natural sciences after he had gone to bed last night (he goes to bed early). He said he woke up at 5am after stress dream, checked his emails and there it was. Same day as Manchester interview so will reschedule that.

Can’t think of a better start to the day at the moment Runners (minus the stressy dream). Congratulations and best of luck to your DS.
Meanwhile what has it come to when the first thing I check in the morning is the pesky TSR oxford spreadsheet?!
A tranche of classics interviews now out (unless poster posted 3 times, as all for same coll) so waiting with dread and hoping DS not within the

Congratulations to everyone with interviews!

It feels like the next step in this torturous journey is here. From PS writing, to submitting to UCAS, to nail biting test taking and now interviews. I am glad to have a parental outlet with MN.

I think I love Ds's chosen college. They emailed to say that they are compiling lists of those to interview and rather than make everyone wait until the list is complete they thought they would put him out of his misery.

So he will be invited for interview at Cambridge and he should expect the actual interview email to arrive shortly.

Good luck to everyone else waiting, I hope everyone on here gets an interview.

Report
Crumpetstoday · 26/11/2020 07:41

As far as pre interview tests go, I think it can depend on the college. Ds had an test on the Sunday he arrived which was used for the basis of at least some of his interviews. Often where he went wrong and why. This was for PPE, I don’t think his friends who applied for PPE to other colleges had any test.

Runners and CoolKittens - Congratulations! They have kept you waiting for these NS interviews, haven’t they.

Frau - if they interview 95% for Classics, I’m sure it’s a case of when, not if for your DS.

Oh my god, there is a thread for Cambridge on Student Room and some of them sound so stressed out, poor things. The whole thing is ridiculous, really.

Good luck to anyone still waiting today...

Baaa - your mother sounds spookily like mine. When I told her DS had a Bath offer, her response was, “Not that terrible dirty town with no parking.” She’s never even been to Bath Confused. She once went to Canterbury so may well be confused (Canterbury is beautiful anyway).
