Carrying on from our previous thread.

I believe these threads have probably been running since the summer/autumn of when our DC were about to start/in Year 13 (so 2018)?

Checking in to the new thread, I don't post much but I'm a constant lurker 👋

Thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18.

Thanks for setting up the new thread @NewModelArmyMayhem18. Good to know I only missed a year of chat then....

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I like the title.

Thanks for the new thread!

I’ve just ordered another folding table/desk online. Both dd & ds1 have exams in January which will most likely be online. So it’s very possible that they will stay here for an extended period until their exams are finished. Hence the need for an extra desk as I’ve been using Ds’ one when I’ve been wfh.

@Decorhate I set up a rather cute little study space in the hall to accommodate extra room for working but neither of mine will use it Sad.

Can I ask why your dc are not keen to go back to their university town in January? Do they prefer home to living away? Genuinely curious as there seems such a mix of what students are doing to cope

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/11/2020 14:38

DS doesn't think he studies well at home (I think I'd be the same TBQH), so was only going to do a week over Christmas anyway. Goodness knows what will happen now but I would fully expect he'll be sticking with 'plan A' (to go back just before New Year's Day) if he gets the option.

Not sure it's a good idea for student rentals (halls are a different matter) to be left empty for months on end particularly if it's a cold winter.

OP posts:
Teenageromance · 01/11/2020 14:45

Surely it’s more fun for them to be back at their rentals anyway - even if they can’t go out they can be independent with their flat mates. And have access to uni library etc

bengalcat · 01/11/2020 14:56

Mine seems to be enjoying herself in her Durham house share . She had some face to face and labs and was really excited to go to the library this week .

Decorhate · 01/11/2020 15:36

@Teenageromance Dd has to do some very crucial exams online & she is worried about her uni WiFi failing at the wrong moment. She feels ours may be more reliable

bigTillyMint · 01/11/2020 16:37

@Teenageromance, mine are both happy in their house shares and not planning on coming home before Christmas AFAIK.

However, if others leave, they may change their minds. Or may get stuck here after Christmas Confused

Alicatz66 · 01/11/2020 16:55

Thanks for the new thread @NewModelArmyMayhem18 .. I checked in with DS today and he's happy in lockdown in Lenton .. Nottingham.. 5 girls and 2 boys in the house so someone has been organised enough to arrange Tesco deliveries .. they are using my Netflix so gives me a laugh to see what they are watching !

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/11/2020 17:16

I hope that DD wants to and gets to come home for Christmas. But she was looking forward to getting back to her new uni flat this year. Bigger room. HUGE desk. Large kitchen. Amazing (her words) wifi. And her en suite.

And most of all, independence and autonomy.

Witchend · 01/11/2020 17:42

Thank you!
DD's planning on isolating for a fortnight and coming home a couple of days before the end of term to hopefully avoid packed trains.

simbobs · 01/11/2020 18:23

I think we are going to have to pick up both of our DC. One has too many train changes, and generally loads of apparently necessary stuff, the other has some expensive gear and a dodgy lock on his room door which the management have so far failed to sort out. I don't want him leaving anything much there if it doesn't get sorted. I guess it is too soon to be badgering them for dates.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/11/2020 18:26

We'd be driving to pick her up as I think that's safer than her taking several trains then a bus home.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 01/11/2020 18:30

We’re going to have to think carefully if the lockdown extends beyond Dec 2nd. If we go and pick DS up it’s too far to do the journey there and back in one day, but there will be nowhere open to stay! He’ll have to fly or come back by train.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/11/2020 18:31

I suspect they're not going to be allowed home as and when they feel like it at the end of term. For one, you may find you have to book a slot to collect them if they're being given a lift.

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 01/11/2020 19:11

Well DS will definitely have to get the train as like @LaBelleSauvage123 it’s too far to drive there and back in a day.

We could pick DD up as we did at the start of lockdown in March, if necessary.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 01/11/2020 19:13

DH has just said he’ll drive and sleep in the camper van on the way 🙄

I’m in a dilemma wether to get DS from Cardiff. They’ve got 1 week of lockdown left. There’s a window of 3 days to travel from here.
