Carrying on from our previous thread.

I believe these threads have probably been running since the summer/autumn of when our DC were about to start/in Year 13 (so 2018)?

My birthday was back in March. The day we all knew the schools were finishing, GCSEs were cancelled (ds2 in that year) and we were going into lockdown. We didn't really know what was lying ahead back then.

Ginfordinner · 03/11/2020 17:49

Thank you for the good wishes everyone.

Benjispruce2 · 03/11/2020 17:58

Belated birthday wishes @Ginfordinner!
Interesting @bigTillyMint as DD seemed to think sport was cancelled. Hope she’s wrong. She was telling me that the streets of Durham are packed at 10pm due to the curfew. What a stupid idea that was!

Shimy · 03/11/2020 18:55

Happy belated birthday @Ginfordinner. Sounds like you had a great time Wink.

It feels a bit weird talking about students going into lockdown whereasds is coming out of lockdown. Here’s hoping he starts to go out a bit and have a bit of fun and those going into lockdown, good luck!

By the way, Who else has a dc terrified of insects? particularly flies? I had DS on the phone this morning a blubbering wreck as there were 5 flies in the kitchen and couldn’t get his breakfast Shock. He’s terrified of even attempting to kill an insect whereas I love swatting them. Any tips?

bigTillyMint · 03/11/2020 19:04

Happy Belated birthday @Ginfordinner - I missed that! Wine

Sadly I think it will turn out that all sport is cancelled @Benjispruce2 Sad

Ginfordinner · 03/11/2020 20:06

Thank you again peeps. It's spider season @Shimy. I'm sure thre must be hungry (and huge) house spider willing to eat the flies.

Although, if there are a lot of flies your DS needs to investigate where they are coming from.

icanbewhatiwant · 03/11/2020 20:48

@Shimy ds3 hates insects (age 11) he will wear a hoodie with the hood up on a hot day incase horse flies are about. He also woke up one night to find a ladybird in his bed and screamed the house down. It was dead too. I was hoping he'd grow out of it. Funnily enough he likes spiders though whereas ds's 1 and 3 like me are terrified of them.

Shimy · 03/11/2020 21:21

@Ginfordinner It’s been spider season in this house all yr! We have cobwebs practically hanging over the stairs, all the windows etc. Every time one is cleared is replaced by an even bigger one less than a week later, I really don’t know what is going on.

DS said the flies must have come through the window, a bit odd as he is on the 3rd floor and this has only been a problem recently. Could be someone has thrown something rotten in the bin.

@icanbewhatiwant We had wasps in the summer, one flew into ds’s room, he ran out (wasp in tow) and screamed for me Grin. I also hope he grows out of it, although at 19, he’s getting a bit long in the tooth!

I'm a name change. Good to see everyone getting on so well (doesn't seem to be as much the case on the Facebook page).

WelshDaff · 04/11/2020 06:50

Could you tell me what the Facebook page is called as I keep reading about a group on Facebook it. Thanks so much

Ginfordinner · 04/11/2020 06:57

@Gifgif

I'm a name change. Good to see everyone getting on so well (doesn't seem to be as much the case on the Facebook page).
Ooh. I wonder what I am missing.

@WelshDaff it is called What I Wish I Knew About University.

There are a lot of freshers parents on there, and their worries must be through the roof.

WelshDaff · 04/11/2020 07:52

Thank you so much..I never knew what WIWIKAU - which people referred to - was!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/11/2020 08:34

Welcome back @Gifgif (whoever you were originally!).

The WIWIKAU group members generally seem rather needy. Is it just me?

I don't mind spiders at all and don't know how I manage to have two DC who don't like them - where has that negative messaging come from? But I'm less than keen on rats and mice and would freak out similarly if I saw one.

Our last day of pre-lockdown 'freedom' - anyone doing anything nice? At least the sun is shining this morning.

I'm going out for dinner tonight ! .. Also re insects! My DS is a massive 6 foot 2 gym addict who is petrified of spiders ... I hear him hoovering them up in the night when he's home ... which I hate as I'm a spider saver .. he also is scared of flies .. wasps ... you name it ! ... but ok with mice as we have a hunting cat

AChickenCalledDaal · 04/11/2020 08:53

I'm commemorating the last day before lockdown by "celebrating" my 50th birthday. Don't feel much like celebrating frankly. At least the sun is shining here and DD seems comment. Looking forward to a long-awaited video call later.

simbobs · 04/11/2020 09:46

Just about to head out for a nice country walk where coffee was intended to be included, but it has suddenly started to rain really heavily, so coffee already consumed and we wait and hope.

bigTillyMint · 04/11/2020 09:54

@NewModelArmyMayhem18, I agree re WIWIKAU - maybe for quite a lot of them it’s their first experience with university so therefore more anxious? Plus Covid anxiety.

Happy Birthday @AChickenCalledDaal - are you a name changer too?!

It’s blue sky and sun here, but a bit chilly!

Zandathepanda · 04/11/2020 10:33

Xenia that’s useful thank you

Zandathepanda · 04/11/2020 10:36

I must have the only Dc going back to university today Grin. It’s easier to be noisy/study up there apparently!!! Our animals/me keep making appearances in her online lectures/seminars which is too embarrassing.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/11/2020 10:39

One of our cats, unbeknownst to us, brought in a dead rat and deposited it under our bed. I thought there was a bit of a strange smell in the room but it was only when DD was looking for something that we discovered it there. Yuk!

Happy Birthday @AChickenCalledDaal (loving your user name!).

I h ave been reading those new draft regs for England. indoor sports for children is fine eg at school and for those under 18 presumably at university (I went aged 17 so was technically a child). You can go out to the council tip it says as I do a lot so that's permitted. I was there yesterday and have an other appointment today. You can go out to take food to the vulnerable which includes anyone with a BMI over 40.

I cannot see anything about movement of students. You are allowed out to move house which students moving home for holidays probably comes under - we took that to be the case in March when my son came home from university during lock down.

MarchingFrogs · 04/11/2020 12:29

@Xenia, thank you.

It seems that having suffered 4 days of frankly imperceptible clinical vulnerability, I have been returned to my normal state by the actual draft legislation.

My GPS surgery can now stop worrying that they hadn't managed to getthe invitation for my flu jab out to me by Monday morning.

Ginfordinner · 04/11/2020 12:56

I think so too. I realise that the covid situation doesn’t help, but it was the same last year as well. Some mothers sobbing all summer at the idea that their child is going to university seriously need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Our last day of pre-lockdown 'freedom' - anyone doing anything nice? At least the sun is shining this morning

My lovely hairdresser rang me on Sunday to bring my hair appointment forward to this afternoon, so I am having a cut and colour. My lockdown hair over summer was awful.

Happy birthday to a fellow Scorpio @AChickenCalledDaal Flowers

simbobs · 04/11/2020 13:55

I know this is a bit off topic but I can't get a hair appointment until the week before Christmas!
