Following on from the previous thread as our young adults start their second year at universities up and down the land (and some overseas too!).

Sorry @MarchingFrogs, see it was you that found that there is such a thing!

On the subject of Hotel du Chocolat, I've always been keen to get DS a velvetiser as a present but not sure he'd take good enough care of it to warrant spending that amount of money!

It was a funny old smell but not unpleasant and , iirc, was only on Thursdays!

Edinburgh smells of brewery sometimes and that is not as pleasant an aroma . Newark in Notts smells of sugar beet!

Where I live now used to smell of landfill and brickworks, so I'll take the chocolate any time!

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2020 12:06

You would definitely find that covered in chocolate spatters and kitchen grease in a communal kitchen : probably with some crucial bit missing!!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/10/2020 12:19

Thanks for being the voice of reason @Piggywaspushed re the velvetiser!!

How are things going with your DS and the flatmate who came to the house-share late in the day?

The whole of York did indeed used to stink of chocolate gin!

I remember going on a boat trip down the Ouse some years ago and getting wafts of chocolate smells.

I used to work near Tetleys brewery in Leeds @NewModelArmyMayhem18, and had to walk past it every day. The smell was rather unpleasant.

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2020 12:36

Well... DS seems to have a working phone now so I now hear from him less. He bombarded me with emails prior to that!

He seemed a bit miserable. I think the whole shared house thing has been a let down. Our house is by no means palatial but he is obviously finding shared accommodation cramped. He also hate sharing a bathroom : he has a real hang up about it. But he did seem jollier earlier this week and his schoolfriend should be starting this weekend so,presuming no household bans, he should be able to meet up with him.

I think he just wants normal life and his mummy to run around after him I think he is eating pizza every single day...

Ginfordinner · 11/10/2020 12:47

Is he not cooking for himself Piggy?
DD finds cooking rather therapeutic and a nice way to wind down.

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2020 12:55

No, I doubt it!

Zandathepanda · 11/10/2020 12:58

Bit outing but I used to analyse beer which also meant tasting it every hour of production in a big factory. Waste parts of production were used for marmite. I can still eat marmite but haven’t drink the particular brand of beer in a long while!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/10/2020 12:58

DS seems to have got much more into cooking since being in a house share. Probably because he's more comfortable being amongst good friends (and possibly doesn't feel judged). He is even 'tasting' outside his comfort zone (he was an exceptionally fussy toddler) which can only be a good thing. You never know, @Piggywaspushed, your DS's time may come in the kitchen!

Typo - not drink but drunk. I would love to get drunk but on chocolate gin not beer!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/10/2020 13:06

Oh, I love Marmite @Zandathepanda. I have read that there's a shortage due to the downturn in the brewing of beer over the past six months or so.

If you prefer something vodka-based. I can recommend their Marmalade one, as well. And the Christmas pudding one they did last year. Why it is a good idea to go by bus when Christmas sampling. Sorry, shoppingSmile. The tearoom / shop in Chelmsford was very generous with its samples last Christmas. They also do a lovely cup of coffee, which is possibly a very good thing...
Beer sales may less 'down on the continent? - Aldi only started selling their own brand yeast extract relatively recently and it is a good substitute for Marmite.

Shimy · 11/10/2020 14:51

Hello lovely people! I seem to have got lost somehow from the thread somehow, I thought everyone had dispersed but here you all are.

icanbewhatiwant · 11/10/2020 15:04

@Zandathepanda I've never really thought about where marmite comes from. I know it's yeast extract...obviously. I love marmite. I can't stand beer though...or anything alcoholic.

Jano69 · 11/10/2020 17:30

Welcome back @JennyWreny and @Shimy.

Zandathepanda · 11/10/2020 21:14

Just saw my Uni Dd for a social distanced walk. It’s only been a month but she has been so grown up about some really difficult issues this year...and then Covid on top.
Today I can see the woman she is going to become. So proud.

Ginfordinner · 11/10/2020 21:21

They have all had to be more grown up than they had anticipated.

simbobs · 11/10/2020 22:27

That is really nice to hear @zandathepanda. I would really like the chance to see my DC but I think we are all likely to be in some kind of stricter measures from tomorrow.

Ginfordinner · 12/10/2020 16:27

Aargh. Now that DD has some uni work to do the internet goes down. I told her to take her laptop to somewhere with free Wi-Fi.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/10/2020 16:32

I’m gearing myself up for Tier 3 restrictions for Newcastle which means no visits home or visits there. Not sure whether it also means that DS will be unable to go to the coast or out into the countryside, which he was really looking forward to doing. I wonder if student households will be allowed to mix if they’ve all had Covid? Probably not as the immunity question is so uncertain.

CharlotteSch · 12/10/2020 17:12

Does anybody know if students are allowed to come home once they have had a positive test if they are picked up by car and don't get out until they arrive home? Not sure about the rules on this...

Benjispruce2 · 12/10/2020 17:30

If you’re positive you have to stay where you are. You can’t travel like Dominic Cummings or Margaret Ferrier!!

Ginfordinner · 12/10/2020 18:06

North East is tier 2, as are we in South Yorkshire.

bigTillyMint · 12/10/2020 18:11

@Benjispruce2, but what if you need to check your eyesight or speak in the HOC?
