Help! University not processing transcript so son can't apply for Masters degree.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 08:58

Ds completed his degree this year and was awarded a First. He wishes to start a Masters this autumn, but his applications are stalled due to his university not forwarding a pdf of his transcript to prove he has actually graduated. One of his application deadlines is next week.

He has contacted his tutors and the department responsible, but nobody appears to be interested.

He is also planning on applying to the Civil Service this autumn and it may affect this process as well.

Please, does anybody have any advice on what to do?

He says there's nothing identifying on his results screen. No name etc.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 10:59

He has got sn.

There's a tiny login box with his name on.

Seriously, this could all be sorted by a quick phone call/email to the admissions tutor.

Noneformethanks · 22/08/2020 11:03

Well then he should let his student support representative know Hesmhaving an issue and ask for their support to navigate it. Or you should on his behalf if you are nominated t speak for him.

Significant drip feed.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:03

He is in touch with the admissions tutor. They have told him to send the transcript in.

I'm not dripfeeding.

He doesn't have a support representative. I just try and help him with things.

Has explained that he can't get it? I can't believe any masters course is insisting on a transcript immediately.

I run two masters courses and I am being incredibly flexible as I know other course leaders are. Otherwise all our students would have had to have graduated last year.

Noneformethanks · 22/08/2020 11:07

This is going to sound rude but have you actually seen what the admissions tutor has said or are you going on what he’s telling you

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:08

I feel like I'm going round in circles after speaking to him just now. I don't know what more I can do.

OddBoots · 22/08/2020 11:08

Okay, can he go into each module and see the results and his name on the screen on the module page? If so then it will take a while but he can screenshot the main results and then each page, put it into one word document and convert to pdf.

Or likewise any other welcome/main page that gives his overall classification and include that screenshot too.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:09

He's reading the received emails out to me.

I'm sorry, I'm very frustrated.

OP posts:
Noneformethanks · 22/08/2020 11:12

He should advise his next uni of his sn so they can adequately support him.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:12

I'm reading these replies out to him. Thank you for these suggestions and guidance. He doesn't listen to me.

OP posts:
rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:13

He is screenshotting now apparently. He is stubborn.

SueEllenMishke · 22/08/2020 11:15

It's really not in any universities interest to be awkward about this.
He needs to clearly explain his situation and provide what information he can.

rosiethehen · 22/08/2020 11:24

In my area parents are blamed for children having sn which is why we don't ask for help or reveal things.

Bureaucratic processes are difficult for us to navigate.

A University won’t be like that.

I’m sorry that’s what it’s like for you.

I didn't go to university, I don't know what help is available out there. We're very private people and we try to sort things out for ourselves. I'm only posting this here because I'm desperate. The thoughts of him wasting a year sitting at home here is worrying me.

He will be told,as part of induction how to contact support services.

There is so much support available at universities. I'd really recommend he contacts them. It will really make life easier for him.
ItalianHat · 22/08/2020 11:49

I'm really surprised he didn't sort out SN support at university. He really should do it for his Masters - the evidence of his behaviour on this thread suggests he really needs knowledgeable university support to help him navigate the bureaucracy.

Like other academics and professional university administrative staff on this thread, I've admitted people to Masters degrees at the last minute, or provisionally, with a confirmed place on arrival of the transcript.

There is a solution to this, really there is.

And it is a good lesson in being prepared - if he got his results in July, then 21 days from, say 17th July (our graduations are around 13-17th July usually) then a transcript would have arrived 17th August - that's 21 working days ...

igot20joe · 22/08/2020 12:06

@rosiethehen

He's told me he can't apply to one because they require a pdf of the transcript as part of the application process, so he'll miss the deadline for that one.
But all he has to do is contact the admissions tutor, explain the situation and offer and screenshot of his results table as an interim measure. I would put money on this been accepted as a solution by the university.

Is he on the spectrum at all?
