University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Kingscote , ds college says it will be 26th or 27th with the evenings of 24th/25th as backstops for people who cannot make the weekend. Ds waiting for his log in details , hoping he will get the room allocation form done today !

Rather worryingly he was thinking he could do all the enrolment once he got there . Forms are not his strong point 😳

WellWoman · 19/08/2020 09:19

Does anyone know when the refreshed results (CAGs based) will officially be in the system and uploaded to UCAS?
My DS missed his offer at his first choice, Bristol, by one Pre U grade (so effectively one third of an A level grade), as he got M1 for one of his pre Us and required D3s or above. As well as his three pre Us he also has an EPQ which has been graded A*. So a very near miss. His exam board grades last week had him lower and Bristol had said no, while his insurance place, Lancaster had confirmed him. So he has a great place...but would still prefer Bristol. Yesterday they told him they wouldn't be able to look at his case and make a decision until the new grades are loaded into UCAS and official. DS is getting stressed with yet more waiting for certainty and is also worried about letting Lancaster down if he doesn't go there. (I'm stressed too but trying not to show it!). Anyone know anything???

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:28

juggling Dgd now starting at Kings College London to do neuroscience and psychology. Yes had user name for years!. Have dgs who is 17 he's doing mechanical engineering at a tech college. Not very academic but he's good at building things and engines!

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:33

Yes juggling old college in centre. It was ok but times different then. In my day brass player and working class didn't go down well with the elite that attended there. But of course all different nowadays! I'm sure your ds will have a great time there!

MillicentMartha · 19/08/2020 09:34

Juggling it seems to vary from school to school. We haven’t heard DS’s yet, but at another local school they gave them out with their results last week. The official announcements don’t seem to give a date, just that the official results will be reissued ‘next week’ sometime.

The official results, when they come, will be the best of the CAGs and the moderated results so not just the CAGs alone, hence the delay, maybe? Which doesn’t help those trying to confirm their uni choices.

Ahh, good luck to them both!
My DNephew is at KCL just going into his second year doing something financey
I'm sure we've chatted many times before Sos but my memory's not good enough to recall what it would have been about!

KingscoteStaff · 19/08/2020 09:35

WellWoman Does your DS know his CAGs? (Mine got his along with the moderated grades) His school will know them, so would the exams officer/Head of SF call Bristol for him? I don't think he should be worrying about Lancaster - if he does return his place, he will be making another student very happy!

Peaseblossom DS's log in details have just arrived.
He has filled in his accommodation form, with some personal questions in case he has to share:
Tell us something that would affect your potential roommate: I'm not exactly the tidiest of people.
Tell us something about how you spend your time: Playing sport, watching sport, playing music, listening to music, filling in pointless quizzes on Sporcle.

I'm hoping his academic department don't get to see that...

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:36

Next Friday is likely day for new cags to be given to unis.

Empra123 · 19/08/2020 09:38

Still waiting to find out moving in dates. From the information I have so far it looks as if Exeter (twin 1 restarting there having deferred at Christmas) will be before York (twin 2 starting reading Nursing). My fear was that they'd have consecutive moving days as I'm a single parent and they have no contact with their father. But don't think that will happen!

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:40

Dgd got cags with results.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2020 09:41

Thanks Millicent - I knew MN would offer some answers. The news media doesn't seem to have been very forthcoming on the practicalities such as when we might hear any new results.
If we have to wait until sometime next week for anything official I might get DS to email the exams person at his school and see if we can get a response a bit earlier.
I can't cope with waiting til next week!

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:43

What does nephew think of KCL juggling?

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2020 09:48

He's enjoyed it at KCL sostenueto
I think he had a nice Uni flat in halls, possibly near a park, and got on well with his flatmates
Although I guess it's been a pretty weird first year for everyone since March.

RainbowDash101 · 19/08/2020 09:49

I used to be on this thread a long time ago but have changed names a couple of times since.
My dd has got into her first choice Durham, exceeded her offer, and grades will go up after move to CAGS. It has been such a mess, and I’m so sorry for those who have have missed their offers. I’ve also heard of York offering. I do think the issue with Durham tho must be that they are very oversubscribed so perhaps don’t have the leeway that York and Lancaster have. My dd went to an interview day at Lancaster and the university were really welcoming to parents as well as students, and they did seem very approachable.
My dd also did a summer school at Kings College @Sostenueto. Congrats to your granddaughter. My dd stayed at the accommodation near the train station ( Waterloo I think?!) So amazing to be so central.

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:55

Dgds accomodation Julian Markham house as it's nearest to Guys where she will mostly be SE17 near Elephant and Castle but friends who live in London tell me it's going through gentrification and regeneration so up and coming area.

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 09:59

Congrats rainbow for your DC too! Dgd had Bristol for insurance. I'm afraid London seduced her!. Dgd cags AAA which were moderated down but still enough to get into both firm and insurance thank goodness and cags now well above offers.

RainbowDash101 · 19/08/2020 10:04

Ah, that makes sense to be close to your course @Sostenueto. The different departments are very spread out. My friend’s dc has just finished a degree at Kings College. I think the accommodation she was in was quite far from the site she had to get to in the first year. She ended up living quite far out in year 2 and in elephant and castle in year 3.

WellWoman · 19/08/2020 10:05

Kingscote

Yes his CAGs are the grades I listed. DSs school released them same day as the exam board grades. That is what I was referring to when I said his exam board marks were lower, sorry if it wasn't clear.

Sostenuto

Thanks for sharing that info. I'm afraid my heart sank a bit. Another ten days before we know anything more concrete. Everyone else is getting accommodation confirmed and practically packing their bags it seems.

Anyone else still dancing in the wind?

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 10:12

We had to think of cost for Dgd for travel. Campus she will mainly be on is only just under mile away walking distance and Denmark hill about 30 min walk. She was lucky to get CAS which meant accomodation bought down from 240 wk to 160 a week and she is automatically getting other bursaries from uni too. We plan to send her money each month so she doesn't starve!

KingscoteStaff · 19/08/2020 10:15

Sorry WellWoman - that makes sense now. Has he contacted Bristol (with a copy of the CAG info from school?) and said 'please hold my place for me - I will definitely be taking it up'? I also think that school might call for him as well.

Sorry if you've already done all this - another wait til next Friday seems agonising.

Sostenueto · 19/08/2020 10:17

Hope all works out wellwoman💐 it has been a real shit show by this Government.

RainbowDash101 · 19/08/2020 10:19

@goodbyestranger thanks for the Durham link. I wonder what bursary they will offer for those volunteering to defer? I think my dd is keen to get going so I don’t think she will want to defer but given Covid and the uncertainty about teaching etc it might be tempting.

goodbyestranger · 19/08/2020 10:22

RainbowDash Durham's maximum bursary to date has been £2k pa so I can't see that it would be in excess of that?

Peaseblossom22 · 19/08/2020 10:23

Thanks for that goodbye , see they are looking for volunteers to defer , who would have thought we would be in this position. Ds was keen to defer pre Covid but he seems set on going now and I seem to be the only one who still would like him to defer. Dh thinks he should go and get on with things and that having had 6 months off he really needs to get back into the swing of things . Also what would he do , there are few jobs and the travel situation seems to be getting worse not better .
