University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Thank you for the new thread.

Am I being over optimistic that they will now accept CAGs?

@PavlovianPooch

Thank you for the new thread.

@PavlovianPooch I keep hoping that, too.

Railingsohno don’t forget mattress topper if you can take one- the quality of the mattresses can be awful ; coathangers; extension lead ( one with USB ports if you can; bike and locks??; I’ll try and dig out my old list!!

Divoc2020 · 16/08/2020 13:48

DS1 says his over the door set of coat hooks was really useful - especially if they have an ensuite room:

Like this (although I think ours came from IKEA):

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/08/2020 13:49

DS’s halls say extension lead should have surge protector.

Aragog · 16/08/2020 13:53

Has everyone sorted accommodation now, or just those taking up first choice offers?

Dd is going to her insurance but obviously had t been able to select halls for this beforehand. We've been told is limited left now and priority to those with medical needs, which don't apply to us. So it's now looking like she can't live on campus. But the best choice private student accommodation already gone to second and third year students obviously.

Dd has been proactive and has joined various social media groups and started chatting to other students in the same boat. She may have found a small of first years who are considering trying to find somewhere together - just can't decide to do that now or to wait to hear from the university accommodation. No idea how long they will take.

Dd is taking all this way better than her parents tbh. From devastation on Thursday morning she's now moved on, wants nothing more to do with the a level shambles and wants to just move forward with university plans.

Ironically she's now going to a higher rated university which needed higher grades than her first choice needed.

Just want to be able to help solve the accommodation dilemma now to feel properly settled.

@KingscoteStaff

The dad mounting a legal action was on LBC this morning.

DS needs to get Meningitis jab and possibly MMR booster - I somewhat lost track of all his jabs once they stopped being recorded in that red book!

My current plan is to send him up with a basic set of kit, as DH will be driving up at half term (26th Oct?) and can take anything extra that has emerged as necessary.

Focus now is on DD for Thursday, who is bitterly muttering that DS has used up our family store of good fortune and left none for her...

Do they need a separate meningitis jab as well as the MMR booster? Like you, I can’t remember what jabs she’s had. Will phone GP tomorrow.

We’ve got less than 3 weeks to sort everything out for DD as she’s going to St Andrews. Hasn’t heard about accommodation yet, but hopefully that will be confirmed in the next few days

idsisatwat · 16/08/2020 14:03

Oh, and good luck for your DD @KingscoteStaff. I know there’s a few on here who have DC doing GCSEs this year too. Let’s hope the govt have done a better job with their results

Penguin007 · 16/08/2020 14:04

There was a booster in Year 10 which included the meningitis vaccine you need for uni. DS's private school didn't offer it, so he had it, and tetanus jab, just before uni. It is very important when they are going to be living in shared accommodation.

Snozzlemaid · 16/08/2020 14:05

I was reading a bit about meningitis jabs a while ago. Apparently they don't get men b vaccine from nhs but you can pay for it to be done at Boots. It's two jabs at £110 each.
Is anyone going to be paying for this one?

ohwellthatwasfun · 16/08/2020 14:22

We paid for dd to have the Men B last year, she also had the ACWY (NHS) & prevenar (pneumonia, privately), we also all have the ‘flu vaccine privately (mid September this year).

PavlovianPooch · 16/08/2020 14:23

Aragog, DD is in the same position as your daughter. The insurance is a RG uni and asked for the same AAB as her firm choice. To be fair, the precise course is ranked higher at the place she has lost, but I don;t think it really matters. Now she is saying that if they increase her grades, she doesn't know what she will want to do.

The accommodation issue is causing her the most stress at the moment, but I'm still fixated on the injustice of it all.

Thank you to all the reminders of what she will need to take with her - wherever she ends up going.

Peregrina · 16/08/2020 14:34

I really hope Boris and Gavalar sort this mess before Thursday’s GCSE results. It’s ominously quiet which I’m taking as a sign that there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

I was under the impression that it was quiet because good old Boris has gone on holiday again. Why should he care? The only child he's bothered about at the moment is just a baby.

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/08/2020 14:50

A baby who is presumably already on the waiting list for a top prep school and Eton. He really is clueless isn’t he?

LimitIsUp · 16/08/2020 14:54

Pavlovian and Seedy my money is on that - its the least politically damaging route right now, and they don't want the current problems amplified further on Thursday

aibutohavethisusername · 16/08/2020 14:55

Thank you for the new thread. Placemarking.

Do any of the DC plan on taking a bike with them?

FabTab · 16/08/2020 14:55

Just been listening to the reunion on radio 4 about Black Wednesday. Was wondering if they would do one in 20 years for the A level fiasco. My very Tory friend might even be prepared to vote conservative again in 20 years.

SabrinaThwaite · 16/08/2020 15:06

Broadcasting House on R4 had a discussion which is worth listening to

Also raised on the R4 1pm news - had the head of United Learning academies on to talk about the fiasco, he wasn’t overly optimistic about reverting to just using CAGs I’m afraid (he is ex Dept of Education DG schools and education standards).

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/08/2020 15:09

@aibutohavethisusername - DS might, depends on the location of his allocated hall (tbc). It will be one that he is prepared to lose, nothing expensive.

MillicentMartha · 16/08/2020 15:15

Sorry @seedybird, meant to credit you for the thread title! Grin

Did he say why he wasn't optimistic?

Gymntonic · 16/08/2020 15:42

@aibutohavethisusername yes, planning to. Depending on accommodation allocation but it's probably going to be useful wherever she's allocated

Aragog · 16/08/2020 15:55

Dd has been talking to a girl who has paid the holding fee for a nice looking private student flat so currently tempted to take that and pay the £113 holding fee, Go see it this week and hold it that way. If something better came up take that and lose the holding fee. As viewings are all booked out for Monday morning we don't want to risk losing a nice modern apartment style ensuite room which she knows has a mix of ages, year groups and sexes in (it has 9 rooms) for the sake of a relatively small amount of money.

It's so stressful not knowing about university accommodation and one lad she has talked to online says when he called the university won't be telling the cleaning (and insurance) students their accommodation status for another 3 weeks.

SabrinaThwaite · 16/08/2020 15:56

@LimitIsUp

Did he say why he wasn't optimistic?
Just that he hadn’t seen any signs that the DofE / Ofqual would make any big announcements.
