Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

@nicky2512 that's fab news!! Takes the pressure off

nicky2512 · 09/07/2020 18:43

Thank you. It is great. Just heard on news that Ulster University are doing the same. 2500 students apparently!

DuckyMcDuck · 09/07/2020 18:46

What a relief, well done to your DD.

Divoc2020 · 09/07/2020 21:15

Quick update - DS passed his Driving Theory Test - hurrah! Thanks for the advice about the hazard awareness videos - he got a really high score for those.

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 21:54

@Divoc2020 this has been a good news thread today! Well done to him.

nicky2512 · 09/07/2020 22:13

Divoc2020 Brilliant! Well done to him!

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 22:57

Just picked this up on the GCSE thread. Apparently Bojo is addressing school leavers at 10am tomorrow. As people have said over there, that shows very little knowledge of teenage desires or timetables!

My just turned 18yo won’t be tuning in at 10am! Grin

Great to hear some good news, especially @nicky2512’s DD!

@DuckyMcDuck, my ‘essentials’ list is getting longer and longer. Generally basic kitchen pots and pans, utensils, ‘Tupperware’ a sharp knife, 2 sets of crockery, mugs, patterned less likely to ‘go missing’ a billion teaspoons, and hope that they can borrow anything else.(lemon squeezer? Grin ) Cookery book. Duvet etc, but check the accommodation, DS1 was supplied with one at Warwick. First aid kit (with condoms,) some sort of soap bag or a caddy if sharing bathrooms, door wedge, suitcase, rucksack, laundry bag, extension lead, folder for documents (passport, NHS number NI number etc) Something from home to stick up on the notice board, photo of pet maybe? Maybe a fleecy blanket? Fairy lights. Coat hangers. Any storage boxes either collapsible or taken home with you! Shopping bags. They’ll lose at least a third of it.

10am Hmm Grin. I'm not sure DS knows 10am exists!

Thanks for the list. Do they take originals of passport etc?

Hoghgyni · 10/07/2020 07:56

It's worth keeping electronic copies of scanned passport, examcertifucates, NI number, NHS number & any other important documents. We've been trying to get money laundering clearance for something and decent quality photos taken using a mobile are a bit of a nightmare.

In the olden days, every student seemed to have an insurance policy with Endsleigh. Those of you who have done this recently, did your ZDC have a specific policy or did they rely on your home cover? So many nightmare stories about laptops, mobiles etc going astray.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/07/2020 08:17

double duvet even if it's a single bed - can be folded over to make the bed more comfortable to sit on (also makes it easier when boyfriends/girlfriends stay over Wink)

corkscrew/bottle opener

homemade cake for moving in day (and bottle of vodka/gin for moving in day after the parents have all left)

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/07/2020 08:19

re insurance - both my two elder DC took out policies via the uni (or maybe SU) which were probably ultimately Endsleigh, but I assume the uni/Su got a commission. It was all in the Welcome to Halls packs from memory

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/07/2020 08:21

also worth considering paying extra to get "laptop replacement within 24 hours" - have heard horror stories of laptops being pinched a few days before dissertation hand ins (thankfully in all cases there had been lots of cloud backups made, but even so, not what you want to happen)

Hoghgyni · 10/07/2020 08:37

Thank you. The bent USB containing the one & only copy of coursework was bad enough.

Ironoaks · 10/07/2020 09:06

DS has a document wallet (the type with pockets and tabs at the top) and also a scanned copy of each document in OneDrive.

While we're on the subject of digital storage, it's important that they get into the habit of backing up their work regularly (or even better, set it to back up automatically).

DuckyMcDuck · 10/07/2020 09:40

Some halls include insurance in the costs but I haven't seen any of the policies so not sure how comprehensive they are.

Oratory1 · 10/07/2020 09:47

We found that lap tops etc were covered on our home insurance so didn't bother with anything else as their tech is probably the only thing of value. We nearly got caught out though with holiday insurance - went happily off on hols assuming they would be covered on our normal family holiday cover but not always so, so needs checking.

In case anyone wants to watch:

Just me and the dog here, kids asleep (of course!)
JBX2013 · 10/07/2020 10:38

Our daughter had insurance through her (Cambridge) college first and then independently with a specialist local broker when the arrangements changed. .... Just as well, as she needed to claim on something almost straight away. .... Worth checking with the Accommodation people. Also worth checking the difference between any respective clauses for money, laptop, phone, separate camera, guitar, etc. ... Travel insurance was a pain, so we just got separate trip by trip cover as and when she needed it.

SeasonFinale · 10/07/2020 11:46

Also check home policies properly. For many the laptop is only covered whilst in room but not when out and about. Also it may not cover specifically accidental damage just theft. My oldest's flatmate managed to spill a drink over his but fortunately we had opted for accidental damage on the separate policy.

MillicentMartha · 10/07/2020 12:04

My DS1 needed his original passport as he went abroad a few times with uni friends, after exams etc. They can sometimes get very independent very quickly. Mega bus to London, cheap coach to Stansted or wherever and off they went on Ryan Air to Prague, Amsterdam etc. Cheap as chips in the days before coronavirus. I guess that may well change. Sad

If anyone has DC doing a course with field work (and if they are still doing field work) then it's worth getting a thermal long sleeve vest and trousers, a clipboard with a waterproof cover (Amazon), a waterproof phone pouch you hang around your neck and a wide neck thermos flask as well as the obvious good coat and walking boots.

idsisatwat · 10/07/2020 13:57

Thanks for all the tips about what to pack. I’ve been buying stuff for DD, and she bought some chopping boards & shoe cleaning brushes the other day!
The tips for fieldwork courses are especially useful, though trying to persuade her to wear thermals. Maybe a day of freezing in a field/ river might make her think thermals are a good idea.

I’ve not had chance to watch the Boris link - anything useful?

Monkey2001 · 10/07/2020 15:04

I think you can guess......

dd1 (Who has just finished at University (seems wrong to say 'Graduated' when they've not had that ceremony Sad) said, as she has nothing to do, she will sort out everything dd2 needs to take with her.

Am a little concerned things like shot glasses and beer pong seem to be the priority rather than pots, pans and cutlery. Hmm
