Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

DS had his birthday in full lockdown and so the best we could do was a couple of Zoom parties with family and then had one with friends.

If you're looking for a gift, I made a "First 18 years" photobook with photos from the day he was born onwards. It look a while as the first 12 years or so were non digital and so had to be scanned in! But it was pretty easy to do (I did mine on Snapfish). He loves it and I thought it would be nice for him to take away with him so he doesn't forget us Grin

A friend held a cocktail party for her son's 18th - she bought a party kit online.

DuckyMcDuck · 08/07/2020 22:12

Hear, hear re results day. @MillicentMartha

I feel this thread has been incredibly helpful and supportive and hope that this will continue on 13th August and beyond.

DadDadDad · 08/07/2020 23:27

Ha, @DuckyMcDuck, I did something similar for DS's 18th. There was a definitely a bit of a gap in the record where we went from physical photos in the early 2000s, to digital cameras with photos lost on old laptops, to photos accessible on the cloud! The trickiest part was finding a suitable book to put them in. (I left it half empty to encourage him to fill it with the next stage of his life...).

Serin · 08/07/2020 23:27

Spa babe, we had a lockdown18th Birthday back in April. It was a far cry from the big party in a hired pub that we had planned but we had a special champagne breakfast, went for a long walk and had a picnic, then had peaky blinders evening with just us lot.
We decorated the house and
his friends popped by on Zoom.

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 00:40

Definitely think people should share results (although we won't have any as DS1 did them last year). It would be sad to leave the thread in limbo, not knowing how it turned out for all your DCs.

On the "acquiring stuff" front, DS has inherited a load of kitchen stuff and bedding from down-sizing grandparents, temporary kettle my sister had for house move, the cocktail kit DS2 gave him for Christmas, mugs he has been given over the last couple of years, so he is looking pretty sorted, the obligatory Ikea shopping trip should be quite small?!

choirmumoftwo · 09/07/2020 00:56

Place marking here too. Going shopping tomorrow for bedding etc. DD has requested to share accommodation with a friend so they're not getting kitchen stuff until allocation is confirmed and hopefully they can split purchases between them.
I keep swinging between doom and optimism with regard to results. DD's offer is unconditional so in that sense it doesn't matter but I don't want her to feel cheated by an algorithm.

Lightuptheroom · 09/07/2020 06:30

Hi all, question for a friend, she's getting very confused about clearing etc, her dd put in a 'late' application (so by June 30th) does the dd just wait to see if she gets any offers and can she ask to defer those offers (she still doesn't 100% know if she really wants to go this year) Also, if no offers by July 13th (which seems to be the date UCAS say she should know by) does it go straight into clearing or does her dd have to do anything? I'm totally clueless as ds did a standard application and he's my 'only'

JufusMum · 09/07/2020 06:51

Place marking and thank you for the new thread.
DD still lamenting lack of driving test, unhappy about not being able to collect exam results from school and spending most of the day mooching around in the “lockdown blanket “.
She’s still doing lots of cooking and has amassed a ridiculous amount of cooking equipment for uni. I know everyone says they don’t need a lot of stuff but DD absolutely loves cooking as a hobby and makes pastry etc from scratch almost every day.
She’s decided to stay on at her dance school at home until their big festival in April next year as she’s missed out on what would have been her last competition season with them and wants to do a few more competitions, dance teacher has been fab and will train on zoom with her whilst at uni and she will come home to train when she can.
She’s very calm about results. She got ABC in mocks and she said she would be happy if that is her final result. She firmed an unconditional way back in January anyway. But she’s worked really hard at a standard sixth form comprehensive after five years at a school in special measures so I’d be happy with an ABC especially as that’s three humanities essay heavy subjects and two subjects she didn’t study at all before sixth form.
She’s got an evening cleaning job as she was made redundant from her waitressing job (large restaurant group recently closed many restaurants- you probably saw it in the news), although they are paying her furlough until the end of July. She likes the cleaning job - just cleaning offices and she gets almost as much per hour as I do working in the NHS!
She’s 18 in 22 days eeeek.

www.ucas.com/undergraduate/results-confirmation-and-clearing/what-clearing

You can use Clearing if:

  • you’re applying after 30 June
  • you didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept)
  • you didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • you’ve declined your firm place using the ‘decline my place’ button in Track

If she applied actually on 30th June, presumably she put down (up to) 5 choices as normal? If she doesn't get any offers (or does, but decides she doesn't fancy them and turns them.down), she will get a Clearing number and can then follow the procedure for Clearing - contacting new universities individually etc.

The UCAS website - including bits labelled 'information for Advisers' / 'information for providers' etc - is a publicly accessible resource; you don't have to be a prospective student to have a rummage around on there (and hopefully, your friend's DD will have had a good look at least for all information that applies to her).

There's even a special section for parents / carersSmile

Lightuptheroom · 09/07/2020 07:17

@MarchingFrogs, yup directed her to that, she just got herself in a twist lol , plus thought daughters application went straight to clearing or something

MarchingFrogs · 09/07/2020 08:10

plus thought daughters application went straight to clearing or something

My understanding is that that would only have been the case from 1st July? - at that point, she would just submit an application to use UCAS and pay her fee, but immediately get a Clearing number to use to contact universities directly.

Lightuptheroom · 09/07/2020 08:17

@marchingfrogs as I say mum had got herself in a bit of a twist, her dd has been adamant that she was having a gap year and then suddenly decided to put the application in. Thanks for the info

HuaShan · 09/07/2020 09:30

Checking in again, not much new here. Driving lessons with Mum and Dad commenced, not got out on the roads yet but hopeful for some clutch control imminently!

thesunwillout · 09/07/2020 09:46

Hi can anyone tell me how to find out if dd's course is in clearing. Someone said you don't have to log in to UCAS but I can't seem to find out how to search.
A link would be most of useful.

Thanks

Hoghgyni · 09/07/2020 09:52

DD may actually get around to applying for her provisional. We had a few issues with online money laundering checks (she doesn't look like her passport photo, even though it is only 15 months old) & a provisional licence may kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Hoghgyni · 09/07/2020 09:55

thesunwillout · 09/07/2020 09:58

Thankyou both, I was on there but got confused.
As far as I can see dd's course isn't on the list.
Though I'm not sure what this means to me 😂

Oratory1 · 09/07/2020 10:04

We've started the Mum and Dad lessons too in the absence of being able to find an instructor with spaces. Ventured on to the roads last week!! I'm not sure whether it will be a help or hinderance when we eventually find some lessons but he's enjoying it and it's got him outside the front door.

sandybayley · 09/07/2020 10:20

Annoyingly DS1 is ready for his driving test but needs to get his theory done before it can be booked.

His theory test was supposed to be in May but has been rescheduled for August. We reckon it's unlikely that he will be able to book and take a practical test before going to university. I think there will be a backlog of tests they'll need to get through. If so it will have to wait...

Divoc2020 · 09/07/2020 10:30

DS2 has his Theory Test today Shock He has spent the last two days glued to the Theory Test Pro app (available free through our online library resources we discovered!) and everytime we drive somewhere he shouts 'Hazard!' when someone gets too close to a junction, or steps off the pavement Grin

mumsneedwine · 09/07/2020 10:50

@Divoc2020 tell him the hazards start right away. There is no warning. Some people sit waiting to be told to start and miss the first 5 hazards. Good luck !

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 10:59

Also on hazards, DS failed first time because he clicked to early for 2 of the hazards and got 0 or 4/5 for all of them. The advice is to click when you see it then click again a tiny bit later in case you were to early. You can't do continuous clicking, but some extras are fine. Good luck.

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 11:01

Why has it "corrected" my TOO earlies?!

Ooh thanks, but can you explain what you mean 'the hazards start right away'? Does the video start as soon as you click or something?
