Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

I think my concerns are around their grades being fair.

Hoghgyni · 12/07/2020 14:18

If DD gets the grades she needs, we'll consider the system to be fair. If she slips a grade, but exceeds what she needs in other subjects, we'll just have to lump it, as that could also be considered fair. If the grades are wildly different to her UCAS predictions (in line with her progress results throughout), it will be unfair. Less than 5 weeks now...

SeasonFinale · 12/07/2020 14:40

Suze28 - it depends whether you mean their centre assessed grades as submitted by their teachers ie. realistic grades or their UCAS predictions which are generally pitched at an optimistic grades (statistically only 16%-17% correct). My understanding is after results have been sent the school will be able to confirm what actual grade they submitted (although not what rank the pupil was) and thus you will be able to see whether their grade was moderated down or up due to standardisation.

suze28 · 12/07/2020 15:20

Yes, I meant centre assessed grade. DD1 has an unconditional from her first choice so it's not going to affect uni but should be a fair grade based on what she would have got.
She got ABC in her mocks in Jan so did well in that respect plus Geog and History both have 20% coursework.

TikkaMoSalah · 12/07/2020 20:00

The OFQUAL report certainly makes for interesting reading @Monkey2001. I too am worried about the appeals process (or lack of it), but I think my main concern is that it seems that more weight will be given to historic centre data, rather than prior attainment of the cohort. I may be wrong though. I was interested to read the comment from SeasonFinale regarding teachers being able to confirm to pupils the actual centre grade submitted by them when results are out. It could lead to some awkward conversations in school between the pupils and teachers when results are collected...

Oratory1 · 12/07/2020 20:10

That could be useful information to know in terms of deciding wether to resit or not though.

SeasonFinale · 12/07/2020 20:19

I put this in the IB thread earlier but it does have relevance here too I think in that hopefully it will allay some fears.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/07/2020 20:54

Ooh, just checking in on the new thread. Quite excited to see mention of Wilkos and such like.
DS knows where he's going and knows which flat he's in and has connected with flatmates and even swapped with someone
for his moving in day, as they are staggering them through the week.
I think we're moving in on a Thursday, could be Tuesday, early September, I'll check!
He's going to a conservatoire - Trinity Laban in Greenwich - hence the earlier date.
Hoping he'll be able to play his trumpet with others when he gets there!

MillicentMartha · 12/07/2020 23:29

Exciting, Juggling. I’ve been building up DS’s ‘bottom drawer.’ I’ve bought collapsible crates and a double duvet set this weekend. Not sure where he’ll be and even if he gets Manchester we won’t know which hall until some time after results day.

A smoothie maker (free with a subscription to Okive magazine) has arrived. That means DD now has two holdall, a dinky screwdriver set and a smoothie maker. That's us done then.

Ironoaks · 13/07/2020 09:51

Hoghgyni
Yep, you've got the essentials covered there.

specialted · 13/07/2020 10:22

@Hoghgyni that made me chuckle! We have about the same. Two towels, some sheets (which he doesn't like) and a bottle opener.

Lightuptheroom · 13/07/2020 11:44

DS has informed me that he's going to do his own shopping for uni, that could be interesting!

Monkey2001 · 13/07/2020 12:09

DS saw a friend last night who is off on holiday with his GF, so DS and GF want to plan something to and were looking at various lovely placed without working out that she does not have any spare annual leave and she is finishing work a week before he goes to St Andrews. I told him that it may be unwise to plan going away just before starting at university as he will have stuff to organise and there may be a risk of getting locked down somewhere or having to isolate when he gets back at a very inconvenient time.

He told me to take my shoes off before I went upstairs so that I did not spread crushed dreams around the house! Hope he was joking! I am suggesting Venice after her January exams .....

Hoghgyni · 13/07/2020 12:44

I told DD that the smoothie maker arrived in the car on our way to drop her at the beach for her weekly socially distanced social. Asked if she wanted to start thinking about buying anything else (safest seated side by side). She says not a sausage until 14 Aug.

MillicentMartha · 13/07/2020 15:21

DS will be going somewhere this Sept no matter what, and it’ll be self catering somewhere, so no need to wait until after results. Results won’t make that much difference for him.

I have the same approach to new babies & pregnancies. Until the baby has safely landed, I won't buy presents for friends.

Same here!

Anything I may have bought is actually mine and may be regifted to DS in a months time.

I do have an ever-lengthening shopping list though Grin

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/07/2020 17:38

DS is leaving in September come hell or high water. - his words - so we are shopping the sales and assembling a box of stuff from grandparents and cast-offs from our house.
Have bought;
MN-approved distinctive crockery Wink
Bed linen
Potato peeler (I was going to swap the new one for our old one, but realised they were identical Confused)
Desk lamp
Kitchen utensils

Have recycled:
Pans that were unsuitable for our new induction hob
Iron
Airer
Cutlery

I’ve also sewn him a patchwork quilt, and DH bought home one of those Sheldon-favoured t-shirt folding devices.

DS is buying new clothes - he’s not shown much interest up until now, so it’s a relieve to know he can choose for himself!

DuckyMcDuck · 13/07/2020 18:47

More things for the list @ShaunaTheSheep, thanks. I did Confused Grin at the iron though!

Empra123 · 13/07/2020 18:53

One small tip from last year. If buying a can opener make sure your DC knows how it works! Sent DD off with a brand new can opener last year and she couldn't suss it out!

MillicentMartha · 13/07/2020 18:54

TBH, I have never ironed!

Sheldon tee shirt folding device, ay? Rather dyspraxic DS could do with one but really wouldn’t thank me for it. Wink I’ve just got him a key ring with his name and phone number on for when if he loses his keys.

And distinctive crockery! That was my tip!

seedybird · 13/07/2020 20:38

I ordered DD one of those folding gadgets on Friday from Amazon. When I told DD, she said she'd always wanted one - who knew? Grin

I also ordered a contraption that neatly and compactly stores 20 folded t-shirts - not sure it'll get used but as DD loves her t-shirts, it's the thought that counts.

Next on the list...shot glasses and vitamin D tablets Wink

Monkey2001 · 13/07/2020 22:56

Wow, just been looking at the folding gadget - the things you never knew you needed.......
