Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

DD’s college has huge numbers, think there’s 3500 over the 2 years.

Sssloou · 09/08/2020 21:10

Just googled Subject Access Request

DadDadDad · 09/08/2020 21:12

SAR = subject access request, ie data protections jargon for asking an organisation to tell you the data they hold about you.

So could my DD email her subject teachers tomorrow and ask for her CAGs?

No, the rules prohibit schools for giving out this information before results day.

Sssloou · 09/08/2020 21:14

Thanks DadDadDad that’s helpful.

SeasonFinale · 09/08/2020 22:23

Sostenueto 90-100 per subject is quite usual in many schools for popular subjects.

errorofjudgement · 10/08/2020 08:48

Hope this might be of interest, it’s just popped up on my FB feed as my DS was at Warwick. It outlines the current plans - though to be fair it looks as though a lot is still to be confirmed including reopening of libraries.

DS’s course at Bristol (previously rejected for having the same offer as his firm) is now in clearing at a lower offer. He attended an open day but, due to train cancellations and pouring rain, didn’t get a real idea of the city.

Neither of us are working tomorrow and he’s just asked if I can drive him down for a look around - he doesn’t want to make a rash/uninformed decision on a clearing place on Thursday.

I’m thinking probably yes - will distract him (and me) and if we avoid motorways then he can get some driving practice.

However... it’s going to be 93 degrees and will he really get any real idea of a university during the vacation?

thesunwillout · 10/08/2020 09:05

How far is it from you? Is it the main Bristol university?
If it's doable I'd probably make the trip to settle my mind but please be careful on the roads as they're saying about storms, flash flooding etc.

NotEnoughTime · 10/08/2020 09:29

I would go KingscoteStaff

My DH drove my DS to the Birmingham University Open Day last year. My DS apparently got out of the car and said no, I don't like it! My DH convinced him to have a look around but my son's mind was made up.

I think your DS could get a 'feel' of the place just by being there but obviously it's up to you (also I'm not sure where you live-are you 100 miles away from Bristol or more like 1000?)

ShalomJackie · 10/08/2020 09:35

We trailed everywhere with DS to look at unis. As soon as we were in Bristol he knew and I could tell this would be it. It was in normal times and the city is vibrant and lively then and the uni is various sections of the city but many roads and squares solely uni buildings. DS does like music gigs and there were many and plenty (in regular times) and some big names play there cheaply if that interests him

MarchingFrogs · 10/08/2020 10:01

Tbh, when we went to the open day a couple of years ago, it felt like 'being with lots of visitors', rather than 'seeing and meeting lots of students' (although obviously there were quite a lot of students and staff around). I think lots of open days feel like that and open days are the normal pre-application form of university experience, rather than visiting when there all the students there, but only them, but the being there (and seeing the associated city / town) is still very useful. Okay, at the moment in Bristol you won't be tripping over hordes of students, but your DS will get something of a feel for the city. I would definitely go of you can, although DH took DS1 down on Saturday and said that the Westbound M4 roadworks were worse than last year's M1 offeringShock, should you be going that way.

(DS1 has moved to Bristol in advance of starting his MSc next term, having never visited the place before. His flat is actually nearer to the Frenchay campus of UWE, so hopefully he will have worked out how to get to where he is going at some point before the day he needs to be there for 9am...)

KingscoteStaff · 10/08/2020 10:23

It’s a 2ish hour drive, so will probably leave early when it’s cool. Sticking to A roads so DS can drive some of the way.

IF he needs to do Clearing and IF Bristol want him, then they may need accommodation requests smartish, so he wants to have an idea of the 3 (?) different areas and how they link in with his potential department and sports facilities.

Most of all, I want to avoid people either saying ‘oh stop worrying he’ll be fine’ or ‘I don’t know if you’ve heard, but apparently % of your son’s year will be marked down this year’.

ThingDoer · 10/08/2020 10:24

Morning all. This one has been niggling with me for a while, and although we've tried asking at a couple of Open Days to the admissions staff, I've not had an answer (I don't think I managed to ask it properly!).

So dd has effectively done 4 A levels (3 straightforward and the pre-U in Global Perspectives which equivalent to an A level for her subjects of interest). The pre-U gets UCAS tarriff points like an A level, although it is graded as Distinction, Merit etc, and as it's modular we know she has probably got an M equivalent to a B.

DD also has offers of ABB and BBB from her firm and insurance, i.e. 128 and 120 UCAS points. Does this mean she needs to get that many points from her best 3 A levels, or just over the bar of 128 points in total (obviously easier with 4).

So if she got 4 Cs that would be 128 points, for example. Or a BCCD would be 126. Or ABBB would be 168 points.

I'm inclined to think she needs them from her best 3 A levels because the offer is interms of results (ABB/BBB) rather than UCAS points. Does anyone have any insight or knowledge on this?

Just trying to persuade myself that she'll meet one of these offers, but I know the answer is to wait until Thursday!

Monkey2001 · 10/08/2020 10:47

@ThingDoer it depends on the university, some give a grades offer and some give a points offer - the terms should be on her offer on Track.

If she misses the grades, the points being enough may help.

SeasonFinale · 10/08/2020 10:51

If her offer is based on 3 grade offers then yes it will be her best 3. If her PreU is already an M1 or M2 then that would be a B. That would depend if it is awarded as a 2020 PreU rather than 2019 because some unis want the 3 to be in the same "sitting " and obviously that term is loose this year.

ThingDoer · 10/08/2020 10:57

Thanks both. Yes, they are grades offers (from Scottish Unis), and her preU is 2020 -all parts were complete as final dissertation went in in December and the earlier results put her on M1 so not likely to raise or drop that much on the dissertation.

Agree that if she misses, meeting the points with four may help. Or may not, who knows. Will be what it will be.

ClarasZoo · 10/08/2020 13:17

Just heard the scottish apology and we will see what they announce tomorrow. Will it be a return to CAG? That will inflate grades this year but hey, with one doing an A level and the other doing GCSEs I would take the CAGs!

ClarasZoo · 10/08/2020 13:18

Would it be fair to give them a certificate with the moderated grade and the CAG together. Then everyone can see both. Seems the best way to remedy a crap situation.

ThrawnCow · 10/08/2020 13:18

DS refusing to engage in a what if/worst case scenario discussion. Sigh. Loughborough do have a suitable course with a requirement of AAB though. He was previously predicted 3 As and needs AAA for his first choice. I really do think anything is possible on Thursday though. Good luck everyone, and your DCs, of course.

ClarasZoo · 10/08/2020 13:19

And universities can be asked to use the higher of the two. And future employers could see that Little Jonny's teacher thought he would get an E but his moderated (lucky) grade was B, so everyone knows what's gone on there...

ClarasZoo · 10/08/2020 13:21

I wish I could just email the Dept for Education and suggest my solution (both grades).

Decorhate · 10/08/2020 13:28

@KingscoteStaff If it’s doable I would go tomorrow. Always remember a friend having to hare up to Lancaster from London the day after results day to see if her Ds liked it (missed his firm).

We actually went to one uni open day that I knew Ds probably wouldn’t apply to but would be available in clearing - was good to have that option If f somewhere he had already seen if things hadn’t gone to plan

KingscoteStaff · 10/08/2020 14:12

Weather forecast on Thursday - Stormy and humid with sudden explosive showers. Thanks for that, Met Office...

Newgirls · 10/08/2020 14:16

😂 perfect weather?

N Sturgeon apologising for how the results were handled. Will be interesting to see their plan for resolving the issues. Cannot imagine BJ ever having the guts to apologise for anything.

mimbleandlittlemy · 10/08/2020 15:39

Newgirls, BJ apparently understands the 'anxiety' over grading. I bet he bloody doesn't understand, the spineless bellend.
