Vet Medicine 2021

doistayordoigo · 27/06/2020 18:00

Hi, wondering whether there any other parents or students on here applying for Vet Med this year to start in 2021? I was following last year's thread which was very useful and informative, and was hoping for a similar thread this year for the rollercoaster ahead, especially now that things might be very different to previous years.

My DS is probably going to be applying to Liverpool, Bristol, Surrey and Nottingham.

Just thought I should let any prospective 2022 vet med parents know that I spoke to the Liverpool admissions team in November and they will most likely be upping their 'A' level entry requirements for the next application round. So don't base choices on this year's documentation.ConfusedSad Although from what I've seen most candidates find the grades to be the least of their worries!!

mumsneedwine · 21/02/2021 10:16

@Nobody2u so need an A star ? V strange decision when others need AAB. Should cut their applications down a lot.

Nobody2u · 21/02/2021 10:48

I know, v.strange. They only said that they were seriously considering it. Maybe the ' grade inflation' the last 2 years has made it difficult to distinguish between candidates that in theory have the same qualifications. Anyway, something to look out for.

Scottandcharlene · 21/02/2021 11:20

That’s is interesting @Nobody2u, it must be very difficult for the universities after the last and current admission cycle as the grades system has definitely been tested. Did anyone see that Scottish unis are not taking any students for dentistry this year. The final year are having to repeat the year as they couldn’t do parts of the course due to covid. I do feel very sorry for the upcoming applicants as there will be pressure on places for lots of reasons.

Nobody2u · 25/02/2021 14:09

@mumsneedwine, I'm back again. Quick question: Do you know why the Colston Street accomodation is only 39 weeks compared to 43 elsewhere?
I've got 3 at Uni and trying to save pennies where possible!!🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

mumsneedwine · 25/02/2021 14:19

Not sure ! But imagine it wouldn't be a problem for a student. I actually don't know what my DD has as this year has been so strange. I'll ask DD later though.

Nobody2u · 25/02/2021 14:37

If you could! If it's possible to save 4 weeks of accomodation without impacting on course or revision time I'm up for it! Every little bit helps!🤣

mumsneedwine · 25/02/2021 14:54

Vets are there the same time as everyone else in first year so should be fine.

doistayordoigo · 10/03/2021 07:38

DS was finally rejected by Bristol yesterday, so that's all his responses, although I don't think Nottingham has updated on Track. So I guess he's ready to firm and insure...scary!

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2021 08:06

@doistayordoigo it's good to have a choice 😊. Well done on the offers. Where is he going to choose - wherever he goes he will become a vet (& have fun in the process).

Colliemayhem · 10/03/2021 08:25

@doistayordoigo sorry about Bristol but at least he knows one way or the other now and can get on with planning. Is he firming Liverpool? We are still waiting on Edinburgh and Bristol, but DS feels very fortunate he has his Surrey offer. I think he was quite shocked back at school this week on the lack of offers amongst the medicine applicants. It seems to be a tough year to be applying.

doistayordoigo · 10/03/2021 08:43

He's not too disappointed about Bristol, I think he just wanted to see if he got another offer to feed his inflated ego! Grin

Liverpool was always his favourite and he liked Surrey more than Bristol anyway, so he will firm Liverpool AAA offer and insure Surrey with AAB. He's already put in his application for accommodation at Liverpool.

There is only one other vet med applicant at his school and they don't talk anymore due to past romantic difficulties, so he has no-one to compare to. I don't think any of his friends are applying to medicine either. It's definitely been a tough year for applicants, so we feel very fortunate to have two offers.

@doistayordoigo well done to your DS. All of a sudden it suddenly starts feeling real! DD had her offers holders day at Bristol today and was absolutely blown away by the speed of lectures. I think she's come away slightly panicked! She suffers from dyslexia but up until now has never asked for it to be taken into account. I think that might be changing! She has all her speech therapy and neurological examinations up to date, so I think it will have to be something to consider. Has anyone elses child gone down this route?

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2021 18:50

@Nobody2u tell her that lectures are always recorded (even in normal times) and you can watch them back at half speed or double speed if they waffle. DD loves it there !

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2021 18:55

@Nobody2u in case this is helpful. Been down that road

Nobody2u · 10/03/2021 19:20

@mumsneedwine Thanks for the info. Reassuring to know everything is recorded. As for the assessments, her last one was 6 months ago and showed her to be in the weakest 10 percentiles, but that she compensates with a high I.Q, which explains why none of her teachers picked up on it. I'm incredibly proud to think that she's got this far trailing such a heavy handicap behind her without complaining. If Uni can at least provide some sort of assistance, that would be such a bonus.

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2021 19:33

@Nobody2u they have been amazing. DD sounds v similar to yours and has managed to mask it for 18 years. No diagnosis yet as it is hard to sort out with COVID (& to get DD to organise it 🤷‍♀️). Here's the Uni page.

ipredictariot5 · 10/03/2021 19:42

My DD has dyslexia and is in first year. She had the disabled students assessment and has got all sorts of software etc and is coping really well - pm me if you want more details

Nobody2u · 11/03/2021 13:46

Contacted Bristol today and provided our assessments from 2019. They were very reactive and came back less than 2 hours later asking what extra support they could provide. So looks like things are going in the right direction. Many thanks to @mumsneedwine and @ipredictariot5

Chevalgal · 12/03/2021 15:34

After a long wait, DD finally got her first offer today from Edinburgh so we are all very relieved! Still waiting on a decision from Glasgow...

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2021 15:41

@Chevalgal yeah fab news 🥂

Colliemayhem · 12/03/2021 15:45

@Chevalgal brilliant news, well done to her. I saw a few offers posted on TSR this afternoon and from the username guessed one of them was your DD! Checking e-mails anxiously this afternoon for DS, he would love an offer from Edinburgh. 🤞 😬

That's brilliant newsSmile
Nobody2u · 12/03/2021 16:19

@ chevalgal a very big well done to your DD. She can now relax and wait for the others. She will be going to vet school this year!! ( I'm sure you'll sleep better from now on as well 😉!)

Scottandcharlene · 12/03/2021 17:29

Congratulations on the Edinburgh offer. Edinburgh is my favourite city, my dd1 had it as her insurance (not vet med) and I always feel a pang that she didn’t go there!
