Vet Medicine 2021

Hi, wondering whether there any other parents or students on here applying for Vet Med this year to start in 2021? I was following last year's thread which was very useful and informative, and was hoping for a similar thread this year for the rollercoaster ahead, especially now that things might be very different to previous years.

My DS is probably going to be applying to Liverpool, Bristol, Surrey and Nottingham.

One less decision! As you say, it's fantastic that he has a choice. Smile

Colliemayhem · 01/02/2021 11:16

Finally heard from Edinburgh and he has an interview. Right in the middle of his mocks! He hasn’t got his exam timetable but we are working on the basis it is probably easier to change an exam than try to rearrange the interview and additional task.

doistayordoigo · 01/02/2021 17:20

Congrats to your DS collie DS's interview was originally going to clash with his mocks, but then the schools didn't go back and it obviously didn't make any difference then. But he was also going to ask to move the exam rather than the interview.

DS got an offer from HK at the end of last week( unconditional on his grades) so very relieved. Still not heard from Edinburgh yet.

Colliemayhem · 01/02/2021 20:31

That’s great news @kpandthesunshineband2.

iwasw · 01/02/2021 20:45

Hi everyone. I can't really offer any up-to-date advice on applications but just stopped by to offer my support to you all. My daughter went to Nottingham and has a very now for over 2 years. She loved Nottingham! Yes, it's a bit out of the way, but she was so busy on the course and her new love (when she got there) of rugby that it didn't matter. They went into the city at the weekend and just shared a taxi back. The course was great - very practical/hands-on. It's so hard to get into vet med and then it's such hard work when they're there - quite a few do still leave part way through - but if it's the only thing they see themselves doing, it's so worthwhile Wink. She loves being a vet and I'm soooo proud of her.

Good luck with your applications!

mumsneedwine · 06/02/2021 18:05

Mine was learning how to lamb this week. Using dead lambs to practice birthing, tubing, docking etc. DD loved it (weirdo).
Then anatomy was the penis of a variety of animals 😳. Bristol 1st year.
Good luck and hope everyone gets an offer v soon. You only need one.

Scottandcharlene · 06/02/2021 18:47

It’s very exciting to hear about the offers coming in. @mumsneedwine that made me laugh, they are a strange bunch aren’t they! Did your dd manage to sort lambing for Easter? Dd is still loving her first year at Nottingham, it is good to hear your dd is enjoying being a vet @zizza.

mumsneedwine · 06/02/2021 18:54

@Scottandcharlene she is lambing in S Wales late March and really looking forward to it. Has dairy in July in Somerset and poultry (& reindeer) in August. She'll get some equine too this year and do small animal next year. Not much rest for them.
Hope yours has EMS sorted too. It's so nice to have it to look forward to in this crazy year.

Scottandcharlene · 07/02/2021 12:00

That sounds brilliant @mumsneedwine, my dd has lambing sorted but not sure what else yet.

Colliemayhem · 07/02/2021 12:21

Thank you @zizza @mumsneedwine @Scottandcharlene. It’s great to hear previous years applicants experiences and that they are enjoying the courses. Reading your threads from last year really helped in preparing me for what was coming this year. I joked with DH the other week that I should write a parents guide for veterinary applications! 😆

iwasw · 15/02/2021 17:37

Hi again. Hearing those 'hands on' stories makes me smile. It surely is a vocation! We had good news today, DD got an offer from Bristol. That's her finished, no more countless checking email/track. Huge relief and gratitude here. Take care all.

Colliemayhem · 15/02/2021 17:48

That’s great news @iwasw. What is she going to make her firm choice?

mumsneedwine · 15/02/2021 17:48

@iwasw fantastic news ! Well done DD. If she wants to know anything my DD is currently a first year there. Going well so far, despite the pesky virus. Sheep handling this week.

iwasw · 16/02/2021 22:25

Thanks @Colliemayhem and @mumsneedwine. She hasn't visited any of the unis so it was a blind selection. In the end she picked HK & Surrey. She has always been drawn to HK (we live in IRE but her 2 aunts & Nana live within 1hr drive of HK). She really likes the teaching style and practical emphasis of both. That said, it was a huge decision to reject the world class school at Bristol! She didn't make the decision lightly and knows the accreditation limitations of HK and Surrey. The grades required by Bristol are almost as high as Dublin so DD reckons if she got those grades she might get UCD. HK is next highest and Surrey is lowest. Now she needs to keep her head focused on studying and hope she gets the grades for one of them! Good luck to everyone.

mumsneedwine · 16/02/2021 23:11

@iwasw wherever she goes she will become a vet. And that is all they want. Fantastic that she has a choice - she's done so so well. 😊

I agree completely. Wherever they go will become 'their' place. Not in her wildest dreams did she expect any offers tbh. We just hope the grades follow. We still dont know what format the Leaving Cert will take this year...calculated grades and/or exams so she's just keeping the head in the books and hoping for the best.

Driverf72 · 17/02/2021 08:52

Hi, I’m new to this thread. My dd applied for the second time due to rejection last year. This year rejected RVC 2 days ago, put on hold for notts the same day, been on hold to Bristol since December and still waiting on HK. I’m struggling to keep up the optimism, although I don’t show my daughter that. I just can’t bear this process and the possibility she will be rejected again. She already has her grades A* AB Bio, Maths & Chem. she interviewed for both RVC and Notts in December. RVC offered her Vet Biosciences Bsc & Masters plus a few other alternatives unconditionally, great offers actually but vet med is where her heart lies.
Congratulations to all of your children who have received their offers, it’s a tremendous achievement.

mumsneedwine · 17/02/2021 10:38

@Driverf72 I'm so sorry it's proving so tough for your DD. Hang in there as she only needs one offer & being on hold is not a rejection. Think this year lots of offers will be given out late as Unis wait to see how many firm them.
If it's any consolation at all DD has lots on her course who are older. Some have tried several times, some did a first degree and one was a doctor now becoming a vet ! So it's not over until she wants it to be - just takes some resilience. Which is tough. Fingers tightly crossed for her.

iwasw · 17/02/2021 11:05

@Driverf72 I'm welling up reading that post. It is so, so tough. @mumsneedwine is right, she just needs one offer and it's not over until she calls it. We will keep fingers and toes crossed for her. Hang in there.

Scottandcharlene · 17/02/2021 11:34

@Driverf72 I echo what @mumsneedwine says. It is such a tough process and very hard to watch as a concerned parent. I really admire this year’s applicants as they have had so much extra pressure on them throughout the last year. I don’t know how they stay motivated, they really are a resilient bunch. It is definitely the case that vet students very often don’t follow a traditional route in to the course, often taking longer to get there, and I am sure that all the time they are gaining useful life experience which will make them more attractive applicants and ultimately better vets. Good luck to your DD, and to you too. The relief of not having to go through any more university applications is enormous. Nobody warns you about that particular stress when you get pregnant 😂

mumsneedwine · 17/02/2021 11:37

NCT classes should cover the stress of Uni applications if your child chooses a competitive subject. So we can put them off early !! It's tough in normal years but this year has been ridiculous for them, with so much uncertainty on grades and place numbers. I'm keeping everything crossed for everyone. One offer, just one little offer each.

Love this idea! They should at least warn you that it gets more stressful as they get older. 😂 @mumsneedwine do you have one applying for medicine this year too? Very brave, hats off to you going through this 2 years running.

And welcome @Driverf72. Hope your dd gets some good news soon.
