Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

@Oneteen

I forgot to add that I am very sad that several of you would be prepared to let an A stsr student be rejected from their Oxbridge offer because of a computer algorithm... Wow😭
I assume you have a child going for Oxbridge as you are a bit one track on this?! 🤪

Obviously I don’t know the pupils, school, results etc... but if it were me and the data showed both pupils on track for an A* then that’s what I would give them. There will obviously be some variability in results year to year in a small cohort. Professional judgement has to come into it. I hope that puts your mind at rest a bit. Teachers really do want the best for pupils honestly! We feel so sorry for them. I have had sleepless nights over the whole thing, wanting to do the best for my pupils.

However we would not put someone above another pupil due to an Oxbridge application alone. That would be unethical.

It's all these unknowns isn't it.
All around us.

I 'know' I have a jar of Sacla in the cupboard. This keeps me going🙂

suze28 · 17/06/2020 09:24

Mattress toppers...DD has a 3/4 bed in halls and I've found that you can buy them from Amazon. Dunelm has fitted sheets for that size too. I'm starting a list of things needed for Sept.

Railingsohno · 17/06/2020 09:25

Tell me about mattress toppers please! 🙏 Do they not make you very hot?

suze28 · 17/06/2020 09:26

Also adding I am a teacher although primary not secondary. Throughout this whole period I have not envied the task my secondary colleagues have had with the grades.

suze28 · 17/06/2020 09:29

@Railingsohno I'm not sure! I also think I may be mistaking toppers for protectors! She's definitely taking a mattress protector with her and we'll get a topper if she gets cold. I'm sure a 10.5 or13 tog double duvet will be warm enough.

Onesipmore · 17/06/2020 09:34

Sorry haven't posted for a while ! Def get a mattress topper, the actual mattresses themselves aren't always the comfiest, so a decent topper from Dunelm make it a more pleasant sleeping experience :)

goodbyestranger · 17/06/2020 09:35

Railingsohno you may well be a teacher but you can't talk for the whole teaching profession, no teacher can. Also, the issue isn't about what grade schools allocate, it's about this entire artifice of ranking where two or more students are equal. You seem to be missing the point.

Oneteen has said more than once that her DD didn't apply to Oxford or Cambridge. Posters aren't all driven by self.

goodbyestranger · 17/06/2020 09:38

On the mattress topper front, they don't make you hot at all. They are just a seriously comfortable addition for the army issue type beds that all my DC have been greeted with on arrival.

Railingsohno · 17/06/2020 09:39

Maybe this is what’s missing from my life! Sounds amazing!

Maybe @goodbyestranger needs one too, might make her less grouchy Grin Cake

MillicentMartha · 17/06/2020 09:43

DS1 found the bed in his halls in Warwick really uncomfortable without a mattress topper. It was never cold in his hall, the heating was set too high if anything, but he never complained about the mattress topper. We had to clear his room at Easter and I had to make 2 trips so I took his mattress topper home a week early. He REALLY missed it! It’s around 2 inches thick memory foam type for a single bed. It’ll probably be going with DS3 if his room has a single bed. DS1 has moved on to an Ikea double sized topper!

Not purchased a mattress topper yet because not sure what type of bed Dd will have...Warwick Accomm not open yet... I did purchase some very nice wooden spoons from Aldi with a leaf print on the handle yesterday..

goodbyestranger · 17/06/2020 09:50

Nope Railingsohno, no need but thank you. I have a lovely bed in a lovely room with a lovely view. I'm not grouchy, just possibly a bit more worldly than you. On the whole, it serves me well.

goodbyestranger · 17/06/2020 09:52

One of my DSs said his mattress topper made him feel as though he was sleeping on a cloud.

thesunwillout · 17/06/2020 10:02

DD is always cold so I hope a mattress topper will body friction 😁

I can imagine them being sweaty tho.

Totally different subject.

DD went to move to get up from the sofa a week ago and her mid to lower back near spine spasmed. She cried out, was hardly any movement at all that caused it. The pain went down her back and down the back of her leg to her knee.

She's been hobbling about for a week now. Normal painkillers and anti inflammatory meds not really touching it.

I've had my fair share of back, neck, joint probs over the years (spd, coccyx, and now fibromyalgia) but seeing her in so much pain has been concerning. Do you think it's probably just muscular?
We rang gp Monday who prescribed 10mg amitriptyline to take at night.

It's helped her sleep, but not really improved the pain.

I guess time will help, but she's getting really down now as we can't walk/ go anywhere.

Any suggestions for the pain most welcome.

thesunwillout · 17/06/2020 10:07

Just to add, I put spaces in that post but it's not worked.

Railingsohno · 17/06/2020 10:10

@thesunwillout your poor daughter, sounds nasty. I would call the GP again. Our friend who is a GP says that it is actually pretty quiet as lots of people are staying away/not calling!

Oneteen · 17/06/2020 10:13

Would a visit to an Osteopath help.. Although not sure they are taking appointments in these strange times

Hoghgyni · 17/06/2020 10:32

Definitely back to the GP thesunwillout.

Handy hint on mattress toppers - if you get one for home, you may need extra deep fitted sheets as well. Less likely to be an issue for our DC as they will be probably be sleeping on a mattress with the depth of a yoga mat.

Hoghgyni · 17/06/2020 10:52

We've been sent a lot of links for back pain exercises as we're all working from home with a jumble of equipment, chairs & desk.

Womenshealthmag.com/uk/fitness/yoga/a707123/yoga-for-back-pain/ These may help in the longer run, but I would get medical advice first.

thesunwillout · 17/06/2020 11:05

Thanks all.

Hoghgyni, I can't see a clicky link, would it be possible to try again?

Nothing open yet osteopath wise.
Rural Devon to boot.

I know back things can take a long time to heal tho.

Co codamol thoughts?

Pharmacist said try the amitriptyline first.

Yet this can take a while to help I thought. Perhaps more suited to long term pain?

Gp said to give it 2 weeks or so and then call back.

Maybe try again Friday.

X

thesunwillout · 17/06/2020 11:08

Hundreds of spaces in that post, I give up!

Yoga mat thickness 😲.

I think we need to assess the actual bed when we get there. Then go to Argos/Dunelm.

Hoghgyni · 17/06/2020 11:17

How strange, it's showing on my phone. Here we go again:

womenshealthmag.com/uk/fitness/yoga/a707123/yoga-for-back-pain/

Hoghgyni · 17/06/2020 11:19

If she takes co-codamol, encourage her to drink prune juice or similar.

thesunwillout · 17/06/2020 11:26

Ah ok thanks.

No I can't see the link, but that happens an awful lot with me.
Not sure why, android.
