Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

Waves to aibu - I remember we chatted on another thread when your DD was considering her uni choices. 😊

Snozzlemaid · 25/05/2020 10:21

Hi Error. My dd has firmed Exeter. She's picked one of the new builds (East Park) for her first choice of accommodation too. Don't really know yet if lockdown has affected the timescale for the building work. Dd knows she may not get her first choice either way so is happy with her other choices too.

Laniakea · 25/05/2020 10:55

I'm another one with a dd on a gap year - she has a deferred place at Southampton. None of the anxiety about grades but the lack of communication from the university is making her anxious (tbh Southampton have been pretty rubbish wrt communication right the way through the application process).

She's done her finance & accommodation applications & had an email saying that they are planning to begin the academic year on the 28th September but no clue in what form that will be. She's most anxious about housing - after living away from home this year she doesn't want to end up back here for university! Lectures online is okay but I hope there will be small group teaching (so she has a chance of making friends) and dd is worried about losing lab time.

errorofjudgement · 25/05/2020 10:56

Hi Snozzle East Park is DDs first choice too.
I think it looks so bright and airy, certainly more so than the kitchen in the block we were shown on the open day,

MissJaneLockland · 25/05/2020 11:12

Hello all,
Is this a good time to de-lurk?
My Dd hopes to go to Warwick this Autumn if she gets the grades.

MissJaneLockland · 25/05/2020 11:17

Oops fat fingers pressed post too soon.
She has her finance sorted and she's just waiting for accommodation to open now.

She was relieved to receive the email from Warwick that they will press ahead with everything in the Autumn, well as much as they can.
It just feels their lives have been put on hold and it's very unnerving.

oneteen · 25/05/2020 11:19

@MissJaneLockland... My Dd is hopefully going to Warwick too.
Which course will your dd be studying?

errorofjudgement · 25/05/2020 11:20

Hi Laniakea, I understand what you mean about the anxieties.

Starting again at uni and making new friends again is stressful enough, add in that it’s going to be so much harder to do that with no clue on what clubs and societies will be open, online lectures mean less chance of meeting others on your course, and possibly only your kitchen to socialise in and it’s a very different experience to what DD had been hoping for.

DD has made a new group of friends at home this year, they are doing apprenticeships or are part way through 3 year diplomas so no intention of taking the uni route. So these friends will still be at home come the autumn.

At the moment she’s waiting for more clarification from the uni, but honestly I can see her coming home much more than she had wanted just to socialise.

MissJaneLockland · 25/05/2020 11:30

Psychology oneteen, what about your Dd?
Has she decided what accommodation she would like? When we visited we quite liked the Cryfield townhouses.

Monkey2001 · 25/05/2020 12:05

Anybody got a DC going to St Andrews?

aibutohavethisusername · 25/05/2020 12:06

errorofjudgement yes I remember now. DD was rejected from Oxford after interview and has firmed UCL.

Alittlewornout · 25/05/2020 12:08

@Monkey2001 I have.

MillicentMartha · 25/05/2020 12:13

Not sure, Monkey. We need a spreadsheet! Grin DS hopefully going to Manchester or Birmingham. DS1 went to Warwick. Those Cryfield townhouses are brand new, they weren’t there when DS started.

Ooo, cross post. There you go, Monkey.

DS had email from Lancaster saying they are planning to start as usual on 28 sept with welcome week. They said they'll make the most of the big space they have on campus to socially distance etc and will prioritise lab work I think. Small seminar groups will go ahead too but probably on line lectures for big groups ie history etc. Accommodation opens in June but they won't hear til after results day. Ds not too fussed which college, preferably one close to languages dept so he can roll out fo bed at the last minute. He's just desperate to go away in sept.

errorofjudgement · 25/05/2020 13:16

UCL was on DDs long list, but as she was also applying for acting courses she could only choose a couple for academic courses and decided she preferred Exeter and Durham who both accepted an alternative PS.

oneteen · 25/05/2020 13:16

@MissJaneLockland... Biomedical Science.. She would prefer Arthur Vick or Jack Martin... She liked the Cryfield new apartments but felt that they would be very popular.

Hoghgyni · 25/05/2020 13:17

It doesn't feel as though results day is approaching with 11 1/2 weeks to go. That's longer than the number of weeks DD spent in school this year!

errorofjudgement · 25/05/2020 13:18

It’s really interesting hearing about where others are going.

DuckyMcDuck · 25/05/2020 13:49

That makes 3 for Warwick I think @oneteend @MissJaneLockland
I wish they'd open the accommodation, it's the last thing DS has to do and I'll feel better when it's sorted.

seedybird · 25/05/2020 14:21

Is anyone else's DC going to Imperial?

MissJaneLockland · 25/05/2020 14:21

Ooh Biomedical Science oneteen, nice.
My DD originally planned to do maths but thought psychology would be more interesting.

I agree the Cryfield new ones will be very popular and they are quite expensive.

What subject is your Ds doing Ducky? I'd feel better too once accommodation is sorted, they're in such limbo at the moment.

JufusMum · 25/05/2020 15:31

DD has applied for accommodation at USW but they said they won’t confirm anything until August. Results day seems like a lifetime away. I wonder if they will be going into school to collect their results?

DuckyMcDuck · 25/05/2020 15:39

He's hoping to do PPE @MissJaneLockland

DS and I were talking about results day earlier. He thinks they will still go into school and get them but that the subject teachers don't be there in case students (and parents!) disagree with the grades they've been given!

I thought they may post/emails them which would be a shame as I think the students will want to see their friends but I'm not sure how hugs - be they congratulatory or commiseratory - work under social distancing.

Hoghgyni · 25/05/2020 15:41

Ducky it's a great course st Warwick with the 3 subjects blended together. Does he have to get A*AA?
