Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

DS would have had his last IB exam last Thursday and a leavers’ reception for students and parents in the evening. Prom would have been next week. Such a sad end to their school days but the school are hoping to plan some sort of leavers’ event in December.

Ironoaks · 24/05/2020 12:11

In the absence of any communication from school, DS is still plodding away with learning on his own. He has done some past papers he found online, is now revising again and then plans to do another set of papers. I don't know where he gets his self-discipline from.

MillicentMartha · 24/05/2020 12:27

Ironoaks my DS doesn’t know where self-discipline is kept either! Grin He’s lounging about in his pyjamas and really not doing much work. The start of uni will be a shock to the system. If he was working hard I’d suggest taking this next week off for half term.

truelove we’d have been two exams down and 8 to go. DS isn’t particularly fussed about missing prom etc. He’s actually quite happy in lockdown. Lucky him! I’m sure most are disappointed.

DS initially said he was going to continue working, focussing on stuff useful for his chosen degree.

This has petered out and, unless he has decided to do a degree in 'playing x-box games with mates until the early hours', there's not a lot of work going on Grin

TheDrsDocMartens · 24/05/2020 12:51

Hello, paid for hoody & yearbook which will appear at some point & meal/party which they hoped to do in Sept but increasingly unlikely

oneteen · 24/05/2020 13:29

Dds school will look to do something for the leavers when it's possible..

Parents normally get to go along for a few drinks before the Prom for Yr13s.. If its December at least I have time to loose some of the weight I have piled on.

Dd meeting a friend again today but she's quite happy at home too.. She's enjoying baking cookies..

HuaShan · 24/05/2020 14:05

Checking in, thanks

Serin · 24/05/2020 14:10

All 3 of ours are leaving again in Sept (if all their plans come to fruition). We will be empty nesters after having a full house since March.
God knows how the dog will cope Sad

Just placemarking.

Reposting from the end of the old thread - I hadn’t refreshed before I posted this.

Quick query - does the student have to have made their firm and insurance choices before they can apply for student finance? That doesn’t have to be done til the 18th June for DS. I’ve googled but can’t find a deadline for applying for student finance (for England) so that he receives his loan when term starts. I’m aware the process could be slower for DS - his passport has just expired (and as it’s not urgent he can’t renew it) so he will have to prove his identity to SFE.

Thanks

MillicentMartha · 24/05/2020 15:24

You don’t need to have firmed. Just put what you think might be likely, you can change it later. Same with bank details, put in something, change them to student account later.

The deadline for guaranteeing funds through by start of term was 22nd May but who knows with the current situation? I’d just get it done ASAP.

www.gov.uk/government/news/students-can-apply-now-for-2021-student-finance

This is the page giving the deadline. Ignore the 2021, it means 2020/2021.

If your son hasn't got a passport, be aware that they have to upload their birth certificate along with a form verifying it which has to be signed on the back by a teacher or similar

sandybayley · 24/05/2020 16:14

Checking in. DS had a big of a tidy up if his bedroom and had thrown away all the uni prospectuses except the one for his firm.

KingscoteStaff · 24/05/2020 16:29

Thanks for new thread!

Anyone's DC planning to Pick for Britain?

JufusMum · 24/05/2020 19:06

Place marking. Thanks for the new thread.

TheDrsDocMartens · 24/05/2020 21:13

Kingscote nothing near here. She will be doing the allotment though!

LIZS · 24/05/2020 21:27

Nothing near here either. ds looked and there were links to Eastern European agencies.

MillicentMartha · 25/05/2020 00:53

Just googled Pick for Britain. Nothing that close to us, about an hour’s drive away.

Oratory1 · 25/05/2020 06:15

I guess the idea is you go and stay where the work is

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/05/2020 07:31

Still not worth the travel from hers

KingscoteStaff · 25/05/2020 08:14

I had visions of them sleeping in bell tents, waking at dawn for a splash in a nearby stream, 8 hours of honest toil and then back for happy songs around a campfire. Just what our academic types need before heading off to their ivory towers.

errorofjudgement · 25/05/2020 08:15

Hi can I rejoin the chat? I’ve posted a couple of times but as DD is on a gap year we don’t have the stress of exams and grades this year.
After much, much deliberating DD has accepted an offer from Exeter. Now we’re waiting for more detail on what the course will actually look like, and whether the accommodation choice she wants will actually be ready to accept students!

aibutohavethisusername · 25/05/2020 08:47

Hi errorofjudgement everyone is welcome. My DD has Exeter as her insurance.

ClerkMaxwell · 25/05/2020 08:51

DD looked at Pick for Britain. She thought the cost for the accommodation was quite high for what you got and if you didn't pick fast enough you would be sacked quite easily. Didn't want to chance it just in case she was rubbish and ended up with a sacking on her CV. In any case, her existing fast food job will restart in a week's time. It will be take away only so she will have reduced hours but at least something to tide her over until she gets to her university city.
