Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

Juggling - definitely worth contacting that tutor - musicians have a lot more time available than usual at the moment so he/she is likely to respond positively to an enthusiastic student!

JufusMum · 26/05/2020 13:33

I think any kind of hobbies has been so diff it for the DC.
DD is a very committed competitive dancer and has been having zoom classes but she has limited space at home. Today she has returned to the studio for one on one classes with teacher but who knows when group classes and competitions will return. I fear it will be after she has left for university. That is if they even start university in September but we have had no communications on that.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 26/05/2020 14:24

Thanks, that's a very helpful thought monkey
I'll encourage DS in that direction and see what's possible.

MillicentMartha · 26/05/2020 17:31

@idsisatwat, I remember your username from the GCSE thread! I was EllenJanesthickerknickers back then. Nice to hear that your DD’s doing well.

I can imagine that orchestras and choirs might take some time to be able to play together In RL. Lots of airborne saliva!

Anyone else hoping to go to Manchester? I’m hoping it’ll be slightly easier for everyone to get their first choices this year, what with low birth rate and less international competition.

DS isn't applying to study music, so it's just a hobby for him. He hasn't had regular lessons since he did his G8, but was playing in three ensembles and hopes to join at least one orchestra at university. He plays the clarinet, and I would imagine that wind instruments are quite droplet-spreading 😷

Lightuptheroom · 27/05/2020 07:36

DS plays brass, also a hobby. All groups have been cancelled for the foreseeable future, basically because they all sit close together and with brass there is spit everywhere! He's also hoping to join a band at uni.

TheDrsDocMartens · 27/05/2020 08:14

If anyone is going to Cardiff they’ve a few bands/orchestras etc . Dd1 wanted to carry on playing at uni.

Monkey2001 · 27/05/2020 13:20

Nice e-mail from St Andrews saying they are still planning dual delivery, face-to-face from 7/9 for those who can get there and on-line for those who can't. Maybe I am too pessimistic and it will all be better than I expect! Smile

Lightuptheroom · 27/05/2020 15:04

According to BBC , Manchester have announced online only

MillicentMartha · 27/05/2020 15:40

You’re about 2 weeks too late with that news, @Lightuptheroom! DS got an email from them on the 11th. All lectures online for the first semester but hoping to have tutorials and seminars face to face.

I suspect that most universities will end up going for that sort of plan. I think Manchester was the first to play their hand.

Alittlewornout · 27/05/2020 16:14

@Monkey2001 Dd received that email today as well so is quite hopeful that some sort of uni experience will happen.

Lightuptheroom · 27/05/2020 17:17

Oops sorry!

KingscoteStaff · 27/05/2020 17:28

Very positive email from Durham - subtext is ‘We gave you an offer because we want you, please don’t be swayed by an unconditional offer from another suitor’!

sandybayley · 27/05/2020 17:36

@KingscoteStaff - that's good. Positive reporting on Oxford plans from BBC. Though to be fair what they're saying is much the same as Cambridge just a different headline from the BBC!

I was very encouraged by a Facebook post from Swansea saying that they are ready for their students in September and will be offering a mix of face to face teaching and online lectures, student accommodation will be open, and they are planning for online welcome and induction at the start of term. So good for my DD who'll be going into her final year.
DS was also interested to have a look through and we had a nice chat about how things might work out for him too - hopefully will be able to move into halls but Freshers week probably a bit quieter than usual. He thought he'd be able to meet his student flatmates though and probably get a few beers in!
I hope it all works out well for everyone - All the best to those planning it all!

choirmumoftwo · 27/05/2020 22:53

DS going into final year music at Cardiff. He's seriously considering not moving back for the start of term as lectures will almost certainly be online and his course is very few contact hours anyway. No chance of any core ensembles or extra curricular music happening (first study voice) for infection control reasons, no income stream available (choral scholarship, supply teaching and football refereeing all suspended). I think he'd consider an interruption of studies but who knows where we'll be a year further down the line?
It's such a shame but obviously unavoidable.
Cardiff is however a great place to be a music student in normal circumstances!

oneteen · 28/05/2020 08:41

Interesting to hear about Durhams email.. I've seen that a few DC have withdrawn from their Durham offers including one of Dds friends in recent weeks... Probably just a coincidence though.

Laniakea · 28/05/2020 08:46

still deathly silence from Southampton Hmm

JugglingFromHereToThere · 28/05/2020 09:13

It was interesting from Swansea that they appear to be trying to be very flexible for their students, saying, for the autumn term, that you could be based in Swansea, go into halls or other accommodation, and attend some face to face teaching although lectures will be online, or you could be elsewhere in the country (at home?) and accessing lectures, and presumably other support and contact, from there. Mention too of international students who may be tuning in from their home countries. Perhaps making provision for the international students encourages them to be more flexible for home students too.
Also talk of induction weeks (online based) in both September and January.
Seems trying to be inclusive, supportive, and welcoming to students through the year whatever their circumstances.
You could check out what they said by looking up Swansea University on Facebook
(sorry never learnt to do links)

idsisatwat · 28/05/2020 13:32

@MillicentMartha Lol, think I’ve had the same for years!

suze28 · 28/05/2020 14:02

For anyone who is on fb, there's a group worth joining. It's probably been mentioned in her before but anyway. It's WIWIKAU. I'd spotted a letter sent out by Edge Hill on there this morning so more universities are starting to make statements about autumn term.
