Less than 3 months to go until we have a better idea what the future has in store for our DC. Let’s hope that even if most lectures are online that accommodation is open and they can move up, across or down to their university towns and start their student life.

We should have been in the middle of exams, instead we have this strange limbo of lockdown. It could have been worse, though.

@MillicentMartha yes, I agree!

spababe · 28/05/2020 16:07

@Laniakea my DS has firmed Southampton. He had an email yesterday giving him some maths work to do over the Summer. He's been enthusiastic about the work. No news on 'blended' lectures yet but honestly I think it's too early to call.

Laniakea · 28/05/2020 17:14

Ah @spababe I’ll tell dd - she mailed her department about 2 weeks ago to ask if they had any suggested reading or bridging work - she’d like to get her brain going after a gap year & now being furloughed - no response though!

KingscoteStaff · 28/05/2020 17:59

DS is reading Machiavelli for his first course - finding several links with current events...

errorofjudgement · 28/05/2020 18:06

DDs has a lovely email from Exeter stressing that they are keen to move to f2f teaching as soon as it’s safe to to do so.
They talk about welcoming students to the Exeter community, etc it’s a really upbeat email and very positive

Lightuptheroom · 28/05/2020 18:08

Question about student finance, they've asked for ds documents by post, does that mean we have to send originals?

Snozzlemaid · 28/05/2020 18:11

error My dd was much more positive about it all after the email from Exeter. She just wants to go and get started, she's not too keen on starting online.

errorofjudgement · 28/05/2020 18:15

Snozzle it’s a lovely email isn’t it? DD has signed up to both the FB freshers group, and a separate FB freshers group for her course. She commented on how upbeat everyone’s feeling after the email.

Snozzlemaid · 28/05/2020 18:19

Yes my dd is on a FB group for her subject. Really nice they can connect before they start.

thesunwillout · 28/05/2020 19:41

@Lightuptheroom

I've sent copies which have been accepted. Hth

TheDrsDocMartens · 28/05/2020 21:23

Don’t send originals.

TheDrsDocMartens · 28/05/2020 21:24

We looked up the reading lists from this year and got some of the books as they won’t change much.
Dd2 is in a Netflix party now with some of her (hopefully) course mates. Watching a French film.

Hoghgyni · 28/05/2020 21:26

Millicent I immediately thought that you were being exceptionally rude about IDS's DC, then it clicked.

I'm getting ads for Northumbria Uni following me around these threads. I don't want to do distance learning psychology.

Laniakea · 28/05/2020 21:46

^dd did this too, she asked for a couple for Christmas Grin I think she desperately needs to feel part of something atm ... it's all discombobulating.

MillicentMartha · 28/05/2020 23:07

@Lightuptheroom Definitely don’t send originals! You might not get them back. They note that they’ve seen the copies, then destroy them. The next year you usually have to send copies again, even if it’s the exact same piece of paper. (Grumble, grumble decree absolute sent 5 times so far.)

DS has received a really positive email from Warwick with a comprehensive reading list and info about the course. It seems to have motivated him which is great.

Wish they'd open their accommodation choices though!

Lightuptheroom · 30/05/2020 09:47

Nothing from York here

MillicentMartha · 30/05/2020 13:49

DS has a very supportive email from his insurance, Birmingham earlier this week. They are talking about being as flexible as possible with assigned grades.

Oratory1 · 30/05/2020 14:22

DS had that too Millicent plus access to some bridging work and lectures on Maths (for CS) to go with the suggestions for coding activities received earlier in the year. They are trying hard to keep them interested!!

idsisatwat · 30/05/2020 19:32

@MillicentMartha Grin the way this government is going I’d have to name change everyday!

I know my DD has had some emails from St Andrews, so I know they’re looking at both face to face and online delivery.

Am very impressed that some of your DC are already looking at reading lists etc. DD is not actually doing any work related to her a levels, or looking at reading lists yet. But she did go and get a part time job as soon as the colleges shut. So at least it’s not constant Netflix & YouTube!

MillicentMartha · 30/05/2020 19:57

That’s more than DS is doing! He’s just enjoying doing very little.

OP posts:
suze28 · 30/05/2020 20:07

DD here is doing very little too. School have recommended some tasks to do which she'll get round to nearer the time.

JufusMum · 30/05/2020 20:50

DD doing very little, nothing from school, no reading lists from uni as it’s a new course, furloughed from part time job in restaurant, mainly laying in bed wrapped in lockdown blanket. Bit of trampoline, dance class by zoom every day. She did have a two hour driving lesson today

specialted · 30/05/2020 21:15

Ds doing absolutely nothing apart from playing guitar and Xbox. Feeling he should be doing something but not sure what. He has actually left the house to meet a friend tonight which makes a nice change.

oneofthegiantsisme · 31/05/2020 17:39

DS is doing nothing, having finally got his student finance application in just in time.

I'm trying to encourage him to get his accommodation forms done, but both Exeter and UEA have a deadline of July 31st, so there's no great sense of urgency.
