Oxbridge 2020 (thread number 9)

DadDadDad · 06/04/2020 19:06

What a year! Just as we've all become experts (at least in our own minds Smile ) about how to write Personal Statements, Oxford admission tests and Cambridge STEP, the complicated dance of the interview process, and how to simultaneously boost our DSs' and DDs' confidence while preparing them for the possibility of disappointment, we have a new topic to learn: statistical modelling of expected grades.

Of course, like all those previous topics, we're not in control of teacher projection and OfQual rejection, but we have this thread to support each other through the coming months.

All welcome. For the record, I have a DS with an Oxford offer for a humanities subject.

Let's not forget that the poor maths offer holders must be looking at all this chaos but knowing that they still need to pass the not insignificant STEP hurdle.
Keeping everything crossed for AChicken's DD & STEP. How does she find out?

bpisok · 11/08/2020 19:44

Absolutely Hoghgyni
The STEP pressure must be awful - but it always has been. No way in the world would I like to be subjected to A Levels + STEP.
My heart goes out to all the mathmo mums.

KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 19:56

I'm finding the wait really tough, I'm an anxious person anyway. Shock
Time for a new thread DadDadDad ?

SeasonFinale · 11/08/2020 20:12

DadDaDDad - Scotland did not use prior cohort data merely historic data so fewer calculations were tested by the poor analysts there.

sandybayley · 11/08/2020 20:18

I did think that the modelling approach developed by SQA sounded a bit flaky compared to OFQUAL. I can't imagine John Swinney will want to admit that though.

sandybayley · 11/08/2020 20:23

@SnapSnapDragon - there really can't be many offer holders who have CAGs that don't at least match their offers. Many will be in excess. DS1's predicted grades were 4 x A** star, he needs 2 (but in the right subjects).

SnapSnapDragon · 11/08/2020 20:27

Yes I think you're probably right @sandybayley, especially at Oxford.

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 21:14

KaptainKaveman - yes, I was keeping an eye out for a good moment to start a new thread. I was letting the Scotland discussion run for a bit first.

Another call for anyone who wants to add to the roll of offer holders - just tell us whether Oxford or Cambridge, DD or DS, and subject (or broad subject type if you want to keep it vague).

But the universities have already been sent the exam results!
I can't see England following Scotland's chaotic lead.

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/08/2020 21:19

Thanks for remembering us @hoghgyni. She has to log in to a portal for STEP results. She's planning to do that first ... then go to school for her A level results. I'm concerned about the scenario where she misses due to STEP and is then the one that has to break bad news to all the staff that are rooting for her. Hopefully that's not going to be how it plays out but we're very conscious that STEP could be the deal breaker.

deFleury · 11/08/2020 21:21

DD, niche humanity, Oxford.

sandybayley · 11/08/2020 21:39

@AChickenCalledDaal - thinking of you as well. I remember you from the GCSE thread. We thought we were stressed then. Little did we know...

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 21:57

Right, I'm going to get a coffee - decaff - can I get anyone else anything while I'm up?

If there are no more posts by the time I return, I'll start a new thread.

Right, that's it! I warned you. New thread is going right here:

Little did we know indeed SandyBayley!

Iced coffee for me please, DadDadDad. Still too hot to sleep here.

Also I've never finished a thread ... will this be the time???

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/08/2020 22:17

Gah! Missed!

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 22:19

Sorry, AChicken, I might not quite have got the hang of that one - it seems the ice melted when I poured in the boiling water.

I was on a zoom call today where a colleague had ordered a Frappuccino via deliveroo. How decadent is that? I was a bit jealous....

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 22:46

I was on a zoom call today where a colleague had ordered a Frappuccino via deliveroo.

I'm sure that's a line in a Jane Austen novel.

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 22:48

Anyway, @sandybayley, can I deliver-you [see what I did there?] to the new thread (link above).

OP posts:
sandybayley · 11/08/2020 22:53

True. Would that sentence even have made sense 15 years ago? Off to new thread I go..,

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 23:00

Now sandy's gone, I can admit I still don't know what a frappucino is.

But there's nobody here, and I'm talking to myself.

OP posts:
KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 23:02

I'm still here....have you heard the breaking news?

KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 23:03

mock results, via higher than those awarded on thurs, will stand. Yay Grin

KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 23:04

IF higher, sorry.
It's just been announced by Gavin Williamson.
