Gosh, so sorry that your DD missed the grades emummy, but it sounds like she may still be in with a chance? So stressful to have to wait till next week!

Monkey2001 · 04/08/2020 14:28

@emummy don't forget the universities actually get A level results about 5 days before the students do, so could call them on Tuesday/Wednesday before they are busy with calls from A level people.

Good point Monkey; not sure if I can persuade Dd to call them earlier when they said the 13th, she’s a stickler for the rules! I’ll try though.

Ciancianese · 05/08/2020 09:56

@emummy a year ago my DD missed both her offers. Things looked bleak. She took a year out to resit her missed Chemistry grade then the exams were cancelled. However she ended with with 2 unconditional offers and is off to Aberdeen (G2M). I thought her approach was awesome- doubling down on that UCAT exam using medify bumped up her already good grade. She got straight onto email and phone at every setback (there were quite a few) and I really think it helped. Anyway- resilience is a key marker of success in many careers including medicine and I am sure your DD will succeed with your support and encouragement- oh and Aberdeen never answer the phone!

emummy · 05/08/2020 10:00

Thanks for the advice Ciancianese. Well done to your daughter, best of luck to her in Aberdeen (that’s our local uni). We will persist!

@emummy

Thanks for the advice Ciancianese. Well done to your daughter, best of luck to her in Aberdeen (that’s our local uni). We will persist!
And my home town. I am really happy she got in there as we have a lot of history with the medical school and hospitals. Her other offer was UEA- brilliant but a long journey from the Highlands!

Persist! Never give up!

So, just 3 days to go until results day. How are all your DC coping?

DD is unbearable at the moment, she’s so mardy all the time and won’t even pretend to be nice, just grunting every time one of us so much as looks in her direction. I’m not sure I’ll cope with the next 3 days if I’m honest. She’s grumpy if we mention it, grumpy if we don’t, just permanently mardy. Any tips?

PiggyPokkyFool · 10/08/2020 19:18

DD1 has taken on a sort of hunted look from time to time throughout the day @EightToSixer - we went camping for a long weekend and I think she put it out of her mind for a bit but it hits us all (4!) from time to time.
I just feel sick everytime I think of it and the Uni offer to "hold her place to September 2021 if she resits and gets the grades in October' is a bit of a poisoned chalice because she will be putting all her eggs in one basket ( no up to date UCAT so couldn't apply elsewhere and her Global Health place gone). I am really hoping and praying that she gets the grades on Thursday and this la la land is over. then it's GCSE time for DD2 on the 20th. AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

242Mummy · 10/08/2020 19:55

DS1 seems OK; the pharmacy where he worked PT in Y12 asked him to go back so he has been working every day. Keeps him busy and stops him overthinking!

Fingers crossed that he meets his offer on Thursday. I started looking at Clearing then realised that if he didn't get AAA (his offer), it's not likely that anywhere else would want him! Definitely an 'all eggs in one basket' scenario here, Piggy

PiggyPokkyFool · 10/08/2020 20:31

My thoughts are with them all @242Mummy
Would he consider something related or does it have to be med?
I feel so helpless - when I think of all they have been through and then one flick of someone's pen could ruin it for them - gggrrrrrr.
Maybe they'll just get what they need , maybe there will be some flexibility this year, maybe we'll all lose our marbles...

Good luck, hope Thursday brings plenty of good news.

Interesting to hear that there are med schools who will hold offers to 2021 for October exams - which ones are doing it? I know Cambridge is doing it for all subjects.

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 07:16

Keele have offered it to DD and I assuming everyone else too @Monkey2001 but no-one else has mentioned it on their offer holders thread so she doesn't want to ask.
I think this is the worse bit of the process but maybe exams or not it would always have been.

Shangrilalala · 11/08/2020 08:55

Hello all. Stress city here too! Just to say that Newcastle have made a similar offer to hold the place until 2021, should grades not go DDs way.

Given the recent press coverage, it’s a crumb of comfort!

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 10:48

Good news @Shangrilalala - what a fab user name.
Gosh what I wouldn't give for all this to be successfully over and to be sitting around the pool in the Shangri-la in Oman...

sergeantmajormum · 11/08/2020 13:16

Just wishing you all the best of luck for this week - we were where you are this time last year and well recall the angst and powerlessness! At least we knew the grades were based on exams and assessments of her efforts, this year feels even more out of the students control. DD about to return for year 2 and even last year several at her med school got in with one dropped grade so don’t lose heart, call them - this year with fewer international students likely to come, they may be more lenient. If it’s meant to be it’ll work out - and will be worth all the stress.

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 13:52

Hi @sergeantmajormum - can I ask when you should call them? Sorry to sound dopey..
Track updates and you don't get the place - call then as they will have your grades even if you don't or go to the school, get results and then call from there once you have them. And what to say? Presumably they are looking for a bit more than oh please let me in? Do they do another mini interview on the phone? Any advice really appreciated as the silence from DD's school is deafening.....

sergeantmajormum · 11/08/2020 14:34

Afraid can’t easily answer that as we weren’t in that position, just subsequently aware of folk who got in on AAB, tho DD friend at ?UEA was confirmed on UCAS even with those grades so pleading may not even be necessary! Student Room advisors might be able to help? Good luck!

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 15:34

Thanks @sergeantmajormum - DD has stopped caring about grades and has gone from I would so love to get 3xA* to I just want to go to Keele in the last few days. If track updates that she is in she'll be happy.
Sending crossed fingers and virtual hugs to all

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 18:37

@emummy does the change in Scottish results now mean your DD has what she needs? I am probably being too simplistic about things.

242Mummy · 11/08/2020 18:41

I'd come to ask the same question!

emummy · 11/08/2020 18:45

Lovely of you both to ask! Unfortunately she got what her teachers estimated so there won’t be a change. I think she actually has enough but her lower UCAT has been the problem. She has been told by Dundee to check on the 13th on UCAS and if there is nothing she can phone for advice. She is studying hard for her UCAT so hopefully will do better this time.
It’s a sad time for her though as most of her friends are leaving - we are in a small country town so anyone going to uni has to leave home. Going to be a tough few weeks I think.
Anyway good luck to all the DC waiting for results on Thursday, I am crossing all my fingers for you!

PiggyPokkyFool · 11/08/2020 18:50

I do feel we are a little cheer squad on here for each others DC - wishing her a stellar UCAT score if the 13th doesn't go her way.

EightToSixer · 11/08/2020 19:57

Everything crossed for your dd @emummy. Keep us posted x

Monkey2001 · 11/08/2020 22:47

@PiggyPokkyFool if your DD does not get the calculated grades she needs, but the CAGs met the offer, I would say it was worth calling and telling them that and asking whether it would help if the school contacted the university to confirm that the grade changes were unexpected.

But hopefully she will get in without the need for that.

Emummy still keeping everything crossed for your dd. And all our dc! Stress really ramping up this morning with all the last minute changes adding to the uncertainty. Fingers crossed for us all x
