Mines never needed a lab coat 🧐

GANFYD · 21/07/2020 21:37

A tip regarding stethoscopes is to look at having them engraved with a name - means they get returned if misplaced and are very hard to have pinched.
You can order them ready engraved, or some places will engrave a stethoscope you already own, if you send it to them
eg www.medisave.co.uk/engraving/

mumsneedwine · 21/07/2020 21:55

DD got a voucher when she got to Uni for loads off a stethoscope. Hardest decision in first few weeks was what colour go get and what font to use for the engraving.

SirTobyBelch · 21/07/2020 21:59

Howie lab coats are usually worn for microbiology. Lab coats worn in microbiology labs shouldn't be worn anywhere else, including in other labs, so an additional regular lab coat might also be needed. I'd recommend trying to buy lab coats second-hand from third- or fourth-year students, as they're unlikely ever to need them again.

I really don't understand why medical schools require students to buy their own lab coats. It makes much more sense for the medical school to buy them and hire them out to students: costs the students less and provides regular income for the medical school, rather than for the lab coat supplier.

Monkey2001 · 22/07/2020 10:50

Thanks all for the tips. DS will head off with 2 lab coats and a stylish etched all black stethoscope.

@SirTobyBelch DDs are provided by medical school for free.

HostessTrolley · 22/07/2020 19:33

My Dd also got a lab coat free - they were issued stethoscopes and iPads too - so it’s wise for parents to check before buying

EightToSixer · 29/07/2020 15:53

Catching up again and putting this back into threads I’m on ready for results day in 15 days!

DD hasn’t been told (Exeter) that she needs goggles or a lab coat And has been told to wait to buy stethoscope until they get there as they get a voucher. They also give each student an iPad.

What plans do your DCs have for results day? DD still 17 which is frustrating but as she is being super cautious about the virus I doubt she would be out drinking anyway. I plan to get some cocktail supplies in stock in case any forms want to hang out in the garden.

emummy · 29/07/2020 16:18

Results day is next Tuesday here. We are bracing ourselves; think I will get in some cocktails & order a takeaway!

Monkey2001 · 30/07/2020 00:08

Oooh, good luck @emummy's DD. Hope you get things going on the good news front.

Ooh good luck emummys dd! Eight to Sixer, my dd is still 17 too - we have had a repreive from all the angst over everyone else being of age to go out drinking, drinks in the garden it will have to be. Let's hope we're all celebrating 🤞

Ciancianese · 01/08/2020 07:44

Scottish results @emmummy ? Hope your DD gets what she needs and deserves in this difficult year.

emummy · 01/08/2020 13:13

Yes, Scottish @Ciancianese. Thanks for the good wishes, all fingers & toes are firmly crossed

PiggyPokkyFool · 03/08/2020 22:26

Good luck @emummy's DD and to everyone else on the thread. DD had managed to push the worry to one side until 1st August dawned but it has hit her now. I can see from time to time that she is mulling things over silently.
She had a message from her first choice with a sort of lifeline if she misses her grades and wants to re-sit in October but tbh it is a real 'eggs in one basket' offer so has its limitations. Oh how I hope things will just work out for all our DC on 11th and 13th August.
Anyone else heard from their offers?

emummy · 04/08/2020 08:30

Results in, fairly good news! 2As and a B for her advanced huggers. The As are for Spanish & Chemistry, B for Biology. Also B for higher maths. That gives her a chance applying again next year if she can get her UCAT up. She’s a bit cross because she feels she would have got all As if exams had taken place. We will chat with the school about the biology result

emummy · 04/08/2020 08:31

Highers not huggers! She’s not much of a hugger...

speedyhedgehog · 04/08/2020 08:42

I'm sorry she didn't get exactly what she needed emummy. X

PiggyPokkyFool · 04/08/2020 09:29

Can she sit the exams in October @emummy the way they can in England? Sending you and her a virtual hug.

Monkey2001 · 04/08/2020 09:30

They sound like good grades @emummy. Is the Dundee standard offer ABB at Advanced Higher? So she has exceeded that and may still get the reserve place today? Does she meet entry requirements for all the Scottish medical schools?

Anyway it is nice to be in a position to have good grades and the ability to get excellent grades if she does autumn exams for Biology and/or Maths, so hope she is feeling positive.

OP posts:
emummy · 04/08/2020 09:48

I know of someone who’s got into Dundee with 3Bs for AH so really frustrating that add has not. There are no autumn exam options here.
Is it worth phoning the universities? Or do we trust UCAS?

Monkey2001 · 04/08/2020 10:02

She has nothing to lose from calling Dundee - they can at least tell her whether they are still considering her application.

OP posts:
emummy · 04/08/2020 10:31

Dundee have said if she hasn’t heard by 13th she can get in touch, guess they’re waiting for A levels. Aberdeen not taking calls

Quadratilla · 04/08/2020 10:46

emummy It is massively frustrating, especially when you know people have got in in previous years with similar results. But you have the advantage that you can start phoning round at 8am on the 13th before the A level students have gathered their thoughts.

My daughter was in a similar situation last year. Based on her experience I would say start with Dundee, use more than one phone, and hang on the line until someone answers (it may take 40 minutes, the line may go silent, but if it's not dead, don't hang up!).

speedyhedgehog · 04/08/2020 10:49

So she's still in the game? I will be keeping everything crossed that Dundee comes through for her in the end. I was wondering if she would get to do resits if necessary, though tbh I am wondering if there will be resits here as things are. Things change so fast atm. 🤞🤞🤞

emummy · 04/08/2020 11:01

Sounds like a plan Quadratilla, thank you!
Apparently she can resit Speedy but I don’t think she wants to. We’ll see what the school have to say - she has emailed & they are sending out appointments for pupils to come in & discuss possible appeals this week.
At the very least she has given herself a good chance for applying for next year, if she can get a higher UCAT.
