Popping in to wish you all (and your DC of course) the happiest of Christmas times! Hope everyone can now relax and enjoy the festive season and I hope 2020 brings only good things for you all. Smile

DadDadDad · 21/12/2019 14:56

Thanks, Gin, right back at you with the festive wishes...

Twas the night before offers
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a student with an A-level coursework deadline.

The phones were turned on
On their chargers nearby
In hopes of an email
To make proud parents cry.

The applicants were nestled
All snug in their beds;
While visions of A-stars
Danced in their heads.

And mamma on her iPad,
And I on the laptop,
Had settled on Mumsnet
'Til the post mortems stop.

to be continued...

When a ring from the laptop,
as sharp as a pistol,
Announced our good fortune -
an offer from Bristol!

St Andrews, it followed,
then Medicine from Barts,
Tho’ nothing from Durham
to gladden our hearts. 😢

This thread is most likely to get quite over the Christmas period and then a flurry of comments in early-mid January. A very merry, merry Christmas to all posters. I’m going to try my very best to distract DC from impending Oxbridge “results day” with festivities. We’ve been busy celebrating DS 18th and my 39th so that’s been a good distraction. Unfortunately, they are also convinced they haven’t gotten in & spending hours literally looking through FOI stats on previous offer holders to substantiate their conclusion they haven’t gotten in. Good luck to all the DC& see you all in January. SmileWine

I love all the festive poetry Grin
At the risk of breaking the mood: @KingscoteStaff - your DC has heard from St Andrews? This is DS1's second choice.

KingscoteStaff · 21/12/2019 17:28

No - just using it because it scans...
Feel free to replace with NewCAStle or ManCHESter.

milliefiori · 21/12/2019 17:31

Phew! Grin

I think we I need to forget all about UCAS until mid Jan.

Hoghgyni · 21/12/2019 17:41

Loving the poetry & Christmas sentiments too. If Mary & Joseph tried to find their way to a stable down here in Cornwall at the moment, they would need to call out the RNLI to help them get through the standing water. It's been raining down here since mid October, so much so that a 20ft mineshaft opened up in our garden 2 months ago which needed 18 tonnes of rubble & a load of expanding concrete to fill it. Perhaps if we had left it, Santa could have used it as a short cut up Australia.

Hoghgyni · 21/12/2019 17:42

To Australia, not up, obviously. Good job I'm not applying for geography.

goodbyestranger · 21/12/2019 17:50

milliefiori DD4 got an offer from St Andrews on Thursday.

Far, far, far, far too wet having just taken the dogs out in horizontal rain (not a million miles from Hoghgyni) to say that in rhyme.

DS got an offer from St Andrews some time ago, but the grades required are the same as the standard Oxford offer.

He's doing a good job of talking up how happy he will be at Durham, which is a slightly lower offer - to be fair, Durham is very highly rated for his subject and has some strong focus on the areas that interest him.

plantainchips · 21/12/2019 19:16

Congrats to your DC goodbye. St. Andrews is lovely!!

DadDadDad · 21/12/2019 19:18

Oh, and thanks, @KingscoteStaff, for the excellent continuation of the poetry. My muse has departed, so someone else feel free to jump in. (The original poem is here if you need a starting point: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43171/a-visit-from-st-nicholas ).

Hoghgyni · 21/12/2019 19:41

Goodbye is that a full house for DD4 now apart from Oxford? Brilliant news.

PantTwizzler · 22/12/2019 05:51

Loving the poetry and the offers. Well done to all.

That mineshaft issue sounds awful hog!

goodbyestranger · 23/12/2019 18:41

Yes that's right Hoghgyni, four in, one to go.

Happy Christmas all!

HuaShan · 23/12/2019 20:33

Happy Christmas to all and I hope all the dc can have a well earned rest, it's been a long term!

Hoghgyni · 23/12/2019 21:04

Merry Christmas everyone & hopefully a very happy New Year. Did anyone buy a cheap advent calendar last week to countdown to 14th/15th? Xmas Smile

aibutohavethisusername · 23/12/2019 21:34

Happy Christmas to you all.

TeaAndStrumpets · 23/12/2019 22:06

Happy Christmas to all! Wishing peace and happiness to all our loved ones!

littleslummygirl · 24/12/2019 08:44

Momentarily breaking the calm but whose dc got an email from Cambridge explaining how the pool works? Aargh just when I thought we could put thoughts on the back burner.
My only words of advice to next year’s applicants is that nerves of steel more important than academic excellence as each deadline and hurdle stretches them taut

Hoghgyni · 24/12/2019 09:16

I can imagine the lump in your DD's throat as she opened it!
