Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

I am spitting feathers right now, I posted the other day about my tutor at university. Well this morning I had an email from them - my dissertation is due in just over a week and they haven't appointed a new dissertation supervisor for me. I'm so angry I could scream at them. I've submitted a temporary withdrawal request until the autumn to give them time to get their act together as I don't think they are capable of running a masters programme right now. I won't name and shame and that's not fair on the individuals trying to collectively do their jobs with all that is going on but honestly, how ducking incompetent.

Schools are managing with a wholesale disruption of education and providing alternative provision, thank goodness the university concerned are not having to do something so important Angry

Rant over. Sorry!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2020 11:42

Thanksreally sorry to hear that, Betty, and also BestIsWest.

bettybattenburg · 30/03/2020 12:15

Thank you Errol and yes, sorry to hear about the stuff from you too BEstisWest - I must have been composing my rant and missed it at first.

BestIsWest · 30/03/2020 12:30

DS is so cross he’s written to our MP and the MP of his student constituency about it. Not sure that It’ll achieve much.

Horsemad · 30/03/2020 12:34

Shock That seems pretty poor of both universities, betty & Best, sending thoughts you you both. CakeBrew

We video called DS yesterday, first time we've done that. It was good to see him, he looks well and is continuing to work hard - suppose there's not much else to do! 🙂

Take care everyone!

bettybattenburg · 30/03/2020 12:40

I'd write to my local MP but he's as much use as a solid sieve.

Horsemad · 30/03/2020 12:54

Do it anyway betty.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2020 17:21

We just had a nice long chat with DD and her BF, who we've never spoken to before, he sounds really nice. They're hoping to find out tomorrow about arrangements for their exams.

bigTillyMint · 30/03/2020 17:28

@BestIsWest and @bettybattenburg, really crap of those unis Angry Name and Shame!

DD says she has been given a 2 week extension on everything, but is struggling to focus and with at home as she usually goes to the library...

bettybattenburg · 30/03/2020 17:33

Bristol have postponed graduation ceremonies. Travel lodge are refusing to refund our money.

Horsemad · 30/03/2020 18:30

Shock that's disgraceful!

bettybattenburg · 30/03/2020 18:52

i have resorted to twitter. We've lost £350 .

bigTillyMint · 30/03/2020 19:15

@bettybattenburg, yes DD told me earlier. That’s really rubbish of Travelodge. Maybe if you can leave cancelling your nearer the time they will be forced to refund you if SD restrictions still in place?

bettybattenburg · 30/03/2020 19:16

I know, I should have thought of that and not cancelled yet Angry

Horsemad · 30/03/2020 19:19

Keep tweeting betty. Hopefully it will get picked up.

goodbyestranger · 30/03/2020 19:20

bettybattenburg the Royal County in Durham, even though it's no longer independent and is now owned by Marriot, is being incredibly generous with its treatment of parents like me who booked on a pre-pay/ save / no cancellation basis. They offered to keep my booking on the system and will move it to the new date as soon as I know it and have sent an email to confirm also saying that if I have no other option, they'll offer a full refund. I was astonished but grateful. Shame on Travelodge.

Horsemad · 30/03/2020 19:34

I booked on Booking. com, haven't checked yet re reservation but hopefully we can cancel as per the agreement.

bigTillyMint · 31/03/2020 08:31

We stayed there in October @goodbyestranger and got upgraded to a suite!!!! So I totally recommend them Grin

@Horsemad I booked on there and all refunded fine

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2020 19:23

DD has had the email about what's happening re exams - they're going to do a series of online assessments. They won't be graded in the usual way except for the few people who have opted to leave with a bachelors rather than continuing to the masters year. Those will have a viva as well to help decide a fair grade.

It seems to be a pragmatic solution. She should hear soon about what they'll be doing for their 3rd year projects.

Xenia · 31/03/2020 19:51

Nearly £700 pounds for me too (Bristol) although if hotels have to remain closed by law by the July original graduation dates I expect the hotel will refund it as they are doing that for all bookings to 30 April in full at our hotel. If things are reopened then the twins will enjoy 2 nights with a room each in a nice hotel with breakfast etc I suppose but without the graduations so at least someone will be enjoying the rooms. They can take a friend each.

Was scrolling through the MailOnline (well it’s Friday afternoon in lockdown, and not yet Wine o'clock when I spotted that Australia has ordered all backpackers and foreign students home. But there are very few flights.

I will allow for Mail inaccuracies but still though of latedecember’s DS. I hope he is OK.

My student is showing signs of boredom. They are promised a rewritten syllabus in mid April. Sanity demands that it is delivered before then.

bettybattenburg · 03/04/2020 17:08

Errol do you happen to know if that's all subjects at Bristol please?

BestIsWest · 03/04/2020 17:10

DS has been told that so long as they pass their two final assessments ( no exams in his case) then their final grade will not go down from what they’ve achieved so far. I think many of the universities have said this now. In other words they won’t be worse off.

goodbyestranger · 03/04/2020 22:46

Durham told its finalists on Wednesday that they would also not get a classification lower than their second year exams plus assessments since then, up to the declaration that this was a pandemic.

bettybattenburg · 03/04/2020 23:17

It doesn't cover the dissertations of course.
