Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

Good news re intercalation choice @Needmoresleep. 🙂

The self isolation thing for returning students, is good but last week, someone I know (German) returned on a flight to UK from Germany & was allowed straight back into work!

BestIsWest · 26/03/2020 16:32

I read yesterday that sore, red eyes are supposedly a common symptom of Covid 19.

bettybattenburg · 26/03/2020 16:48

sore, red eyes are supposedly a common symptom of Covid 19.

That will have a lot of people thinking they have it then, I get sore eyes as soon as the tree or grass pollen starts along with a sinuses headache (had one for several days now) and ear ache (ditto) and continuous sore throat (ditto)

goodbyestranger · 26/03/2020 17:26

And DD got offered a place on her top choice intercalation

Very good news!

Needmoresleep · 26/03/2020 17:31

KCL researchers are suggesting
covid.joinzoe.com/

that somewhere between 0.46 million and 6.6 million have been infected. It's really impossible to know whether what we have is just a winter bug or CV. We are not particularly ill, but none of us are shaking it off as we normally would. As we live in Central London we were almost certainly exposed at some point.

If the higher figure is accurate, an antibody test would, as Boris suggests, be a game changer, allowing those of our DC who got over it without realising they were ill, get on with their lives. And also give us a better sense of how dangerous it is, and hence an understanding of the risks of otherwise healthy people resuming normal activity.

Whatever, DD is using it as an excuse for normal student behaviour (not getting out of bed, and snapchat) and I am following her example.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2020 18:19

I wish I could buy some more eggs, and potatoes

We live in an area with potato fields and egg producers, and dairy farms ... I'm sure supplies will gradually even out! I had mash for the first time in ages tonight and will be making egg custard later to use some of DHs slightly over enthusiastic purchases from the local supplier. This will replace yogurt, which we don't have (not even any to make more at home)

Xenia · 26/03/2020 19:07

A New York nurse said every proven Covid patient in her care had red eyes by the way. We really need lots of havbe it now or might have had it tests so the scientists can build up more data.

Some companies which supply food to restaurants and airlines by the way have loads of supply and are trying to find ways to cut portions down suitable to supply the on line consumer market.

Twin 2 drove home this afternoon without incident but he has an essay due tomorrow so says he is going to an all nighter once he gets back from the supermarket. Nothing in the package today from the state of the self employed earning over £50k but promises of big national insurance tax hikes next year so nothing very surprising there.

bettybattenburg · 26/03/2020 19:14

I think I might have had it but I'm assuming that I haven't and not being complacent just in case.

SMaCM · 26/03/2020 19:29

Yes sorry 14 days. DD said they were told they basically had to stay away from the rest of the family for 14 days if they didn't come home before lockdown. It seems a day can make a different to whether you spread the infection or not 😂. I know it's not at all funny, but some of the 'rules' are nonsensical.

She has been home a week now and no symptoms from any of us 🤞.

Stay well everyone.

Needmoresleep · 26/03/2020 22:32

Errol, I want a care package! On the bright side the air in our very polluted bit of London is now very clean and pink eyes are presumably pandemic chic.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2020 22:45

I don't think eggs would travel well by Royal Mail else I'd send you some.

Xenia · 27/03/2020 07:21

I had a client offering to send me eggs (he lives near an egg farm) but I can manage. I have about 6 left now so I told the student son who came back yesterday they are off limits to him.

He went to Tesco with his twin yesterday evening and only had to queue for 10 minutes (although they spent £180 to keep them going for ages as they are trying to avoid all contact with people) and got most things they needed. No loo roll or eggs which I wanted but I am not sure if they looked for that. He didn't work all night on his essay due today which is wise. instead he's up already doing it now for 12 noon which will be much better as he's had a good night's sleep.

I hope everyone stays in good health on here. We are all fine but in a sense I have almost been doing self isolation for 2 or 3 years since I gave up work meetings and public speaking and I only caught 1 cold in 18 months for example which I suppose shows it really does work in terms of avoiding infection. That cold was from one of the twins.

Needmore, one of my sons is pleased there are fish in the rivers in Venice too. Nature perhaps will thrive even if poor Greta T has been struck down by the virus.

Horsemad · 27/03/2020 12:21

And so has Boris, apparently!

Needmoresleep · 27/03/2020 15:06

A care package for him?

We all seem better today, but we have been here before. Now to figure out where to buy paint. Assuming the removal company holds to their promise, tenants plan to move out before Easter. My builder is happy working on his own in an empty house, and I am happy using a void to freshen the place up, but no paint.

No eggs, no paint, and a sick Boris....

DD says staff are working out what to do next term, and they have been told not to make commitments, either voluntary or paid, as they need to be available for mid April.. Presumably on line lectures and a different exam format. One of her friends is organising an online 21st. He will accept gifts of loo roll or sanitizer.

Horsemad · 27/03/2020 15:16

Haha at loo roll & sanitiser for 21st gifts! 😆

DS2 still plodding on with his uni work, will be video chatting later, hopefully.

Haffdonga · 27/03/2020 19:57

Just catching up on the end of this thread and I thought you were suggesting a care package for Boris, Needmoresleep ! Somehow, I think he'll manage. Wink Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Amazingly we had a home delivery of full new double bed for ds today. I really didn't think they'd be delivering that sort of item at the moment. They did have to leave it outside so dh and ds had to manhandle it upstairs. It was supposed to be a nice surprise for ds but he's a creature of habit and was actually quite upset about finally having to part with his childhood single half a bunk. Seeing as he's spending the great majority of the day in bed at the moment I think he'll appreciate it quite soon!

Needmoresleep · 28/03/2020 09:39

AO are delivering and installing an oven for a tenanted property. It's a tough choice. I spoke to my carpet supplier, yesterday. He has closed down and has had to lay off 50 fitters, as safe working is not possible. The PAYE ones are OK. The freelance ones not. I managed to order paint from Amazon. The colours are a bit lucky dip, but fingers crossed it will arrive. DD and I will do the end of tenancy clean, harking back to the old days when we were broke and our small DC were conscripted to clear gardens or help move furniture, then my builder can take over and paint. He will need the work. Even Travis Perkins are only supplying essential services, so trades are being forced to shut down, whether the work is safe or not.

The Zoom 21st party will be BYO. Dress code is uncertain. Formal or pyjamas?

Yes, care package for Boris...or Dilyn.

goodbyestranger · 28/03/2020 10:05

Dilyn is identical to my eldest dog. Dilyn is a beauty - my vote is for a package for him.

goodbyestranger · 28/03/2020 10:09

In fact when Dilyn first hit the BBC news I had to check round the garden to check it wasn't our dog, who frequently bolts off for adventures (but almost every time he ends up in the next door pub, for post adventure cheese titbits. Once he was found in the church though, and once in an elderly lady's bed (she'd left the front door open for her carer) but nine times out of ten it's the pub. Smart dog :)).

Needmoresleep · 28/03/2020 12:07

It would be quite an ambitious dog who would abandon you in favour of life at No 10.

He is gorgeous. I definitely have doggo-envy.

latedecember1963 · 30/03/2020 08:08

Hope everyone is doing ok as we go into week 2 of splendid isolation and that the drains situation got sorted.
I must admit I've got my fingers crossed that we don't have anything go wrong with the house for the next few months. We have the British Gas house cover but I'm not sure what would count as essential in the current circumstances.
I'm going to write DS2 a letter this morning and count the walk to the post office as my daily exercise. Post normally takes about 14 days to reach him, but I'm not sure if it will take longer if there are fewer planes flying.
Hope everyone is keeping well.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2020 08:13

Ok here, and with DD. Our regular communication is me sending her a photo of the dog, which elicits an 'aww' or emoji. Her BFs twin was retrieved from the other end of the country which must be a relief to her hosts.

Xenia · 30/03/2020 08:54

ALl well here. Sky dish is broken which I never use ( as I watch on skygo) but my son does watch it so i was up a ladder yesterday outside but that didn't work so the only option is a repair man but not surprisingly that is not currently possible unless you are "vulnerable or a key worker" . I certainly won't be asserting the fact I am in the justice system and thus a key worker as we can live without it and let the nurses have their Sky tv.

I am glad everyone is doing okay. My son's friend (from a different university whom he has not seen for months) has it and he says she was stupidly going out all over seeing people when he and his housemate have been locked down for a few weeks by choice to avoid it. So I am not surprised she caught it and he is so far safe - he came home with a lot of masks and gloves too - he obviously thought about the risks early on. My doctor sibling is apparently not surprisingly being sent to do lots of different types of things (although not corona wards yet) but does not have a mask or gown which seems incredibly risky. I noticed online one poor doctor has been suspended because she criticised lack of PPE and wore her own which she was told therefore breached the rules and was frightening patients.

I had better get back to work now to pay for next year's massive tax hikes.

Carriemac · 30/03/2020 10:01

we are all well too, though DH and I at work today (both NHS) and I dont felkl a bit heroic, just worried.
My 3 DCs are at home, DS 1 and DS2 both have 'passed' their year already by leeds Uni whilst DD is still slogging away for her final law exams.

BestIsWest · 30/03/2020 11:11

I continue to be amazed by frontline staff.

DH and I are WFH, the broadband is struggling because he keeps having Skype meetings.

DS is not very happy as the uni have refused them any extension on their final group assignment. Given that they needed to use software only available onsite to complete it, I think it’s pretty poor. The software has been licensed for them to use at home now but that didn’t happen until the end of last week so they lost almost a fortnight.
