Previous thread - Obvs the end of term is looming sooner for some than for others? I guess the Oxbridge posse will finish by the end of November or just into December?

On another note, can anyone remember which parcel sending company was recommended way back in the threads? (Cheaper than Royal Mail)
Thanks

MrKlaw · 05/12/2019 13:51

I've used parcelmonkey and parcel2go - both similar really most are brokers for other couriers.

MrKlaw · 05/12/2019 13:53

@bigTillyMint my inlaws are there so we go every 12-18 months. always fun but not so exotic anymore - we had KFC the last time we were out there at Xmas as they don't do Turkey etc. That was a lot of fun - queues at KFC on christmas day.

the rest of the family love skiing - I'm traumatised by falling off the ski lift on my first attempt and my family laughing hysterically as I got tangled in the orange side netting :D

DS seems to have a very full on week this week and then very little next week. He has a maths test on Tuesday which I am sure he's very excited about Wink and so his maths tutorial on Friday 13th at 4pm is cancelled. This means we can pick him up on Friday which works out well with plans for next weekend.
We are buying a bike cover so that he can store his bike in his room over the hols - feels safer than leaving it in the bike shed. Don't really want to bring it home - he won't use it (probably looking forward to driving again!)
He's phoned today to say that he feels dreadful - he said a lot of people are coming down with colds and most are really looking forward to heading home for the Xmas hols.

@SchrodingersKitty - Sorry to hear about your DH. I hope he is better very soon.

Sounds like there's some exciting plans afoot for the Xmas hols for everyone - ours will just be a fairly quiet one. DS has got some shifts at the pub he worked at in year 13 so that will boost his bank balance.

Oh I'm envious of your trip to Japan @MrKlaw. Have fun.

@Itscoldouthere I have four cousins who live in Canada, all in the 'deep middle' where it gets super cold. You are right to refrain from moving over until the weather warms up. Exciting times for you though!

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I’m going at some point end of January to find accommodation but will then come back till our house sale goes through probably March/April, it’s my skinny Whippet X dog that I don’t want to take out till it’s a bit warmer, I’m not sure he’s going to like the extreme cold much, he’s also going to have to adjust to going back to being a city dog after several years in the countryside, it’s a big thing for him too!
I’ll be hoping all the UEA mums will keep me in the loop for DS2, its all a bit unknown really Confused

ZandathePanda · 05/12/2019 21:09

@SchrodingersKitty I know you unfortunately may be doing a few more rail journeys than you envisaged. Just to let you know it may be worth looking at the journey back to look for bargains there as well.
Dd has just booked her return journey (3hrs) with a railcard for under a tenner.

bengalcat · 05/12/2019 22:01

I hope you got back on that ski lift Mr Klaw

Bouledeneige · 05/12/2019 22:26

DD is coming home on 11th so that she can vote on the 12th. I was shocked when she said 'oh I will be home next week.' That came out of nowhere. It will be lovely to have her back but I'm not looking forward to all the plates and cups around the house.

Sweetly, I have to have an operation in January and she's offered to come home to be with me as I need someone around for the first 24 hours after anaesthetic. Nice girl.

Ginfordinner · 05/12/2019 22:33

DD went and won two lifesize (as in as big as a human) elves on Tuesday Xmas Shock. She can't bring them back on the train as she would have to book a seat for them Grin

bigTillyMint · 06/12/2019 07:09

Ginfordinner, that sounds intriguing! Are they from a display or something?

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2019 07:50

No. She and her friends went out to a club and she won them for the funniest Instagram story. She sent me photos of these elves. They are as big as her.

bigTillyMint · 06/12/2019 08:24

What on earth will she do with them?!

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2019 10:32

I have no idea Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/12/2019 10:50

I'd accidentally on purpose leave them on a train to bring Christmas cheer Wink! One of those prizes that's a good idea in theory...

Donate to a children's ward/hospital?

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2019 17:33

No cuddly toys as they won't pass infection control criteria.

I volunteered at a children's hospice earlier on this week. One of the tasks we had to do was to unwrap the hundreds of Christmas presents donated so that the staff could ensure that they would be suitable for the recipients. We had to put all the cuddly toys to one side. The whole experience was very humbling.

bigTillyMint · 06/12/2019 19:05

Oh gosh, I hadn't thought of that.

Benjispruce · 06/12/2019 20:21

@bigTillyMint DD is at the winter fairy tale ball tonight. Lovely photos. Apparently there are fairground rides outside again!

SchrodingersKitty · 06/12/2019 22:35

So we're back home with DS after the most horrendous journey. We got there this morning very easily and then I did most of the packing and sorting having sent DH and DS off for a walk as the room wasn't big enough for all of us. He had been allowed to leave three boxes in the college store, and I used big zipped Ikea bags and just about squashed in all his bedding, towels, pillows, duvets, mattress protector, etc, with the aid of a lot of parcel tape. Crockery, kettle, etc went in a box. It still left a massive amount of stuff for us to lug back. I'm kicking myself for not going out and buying some larger storage tubs - most of the other students leaving stuff had huge tubs for their three items. By the time I'd realised this it was too late to head off to look for some and re-pack as the storage room was open for very limited hours.

The journey back was exhausting - we had everything divided into large backpacks, and more ikea zipped bags to spread the load, but it was really heavy and we had to lug it on and off three trains. Finally made it home at 8.30 this evening. I already have very clear plans about how we will do it differently next time - about half the clothes, one large rolling suitcase and a backpack. And some very large tubs sourced in Oxford at some point in the term if it looks like we'll still not be driving at Easter.

That aside, it is wonderful to have DS back. He was pretty tired and grumpy for most of the journey, but suddenly perked up near home and started waxing lyrical about his course. He ate a couple of bowls of pasta and has retired to bed and plans to spend the next few days sleeping and playing new computer games!

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2019 22:39

That sounds very stressful. Is it worth splashing out on a taxi for the return journey? We always use a taxi for airport runs and factor in the cost as part of the holiday cost.

ZandathePanda · 06/12/2019 23:37

SchrodingersKitty Shock do you have to take everything out of the room? How horrendous. Dd is planning on bringing a big laundry bag and a small wheeled hold-all bag back. That’s all she’ll manage but her room can be left in whatever state she wants!

simbobs · 07/12/2019 07:14

I never knew some students had to completely empty their rooms! The whole thing sounds horrendous. DD usually washes most of her stuff before bringing it, but I doubt DS will have done any. They are both back on 20th so DH and I will divide duties, one driving to airport, the other to pick up DS and friend. I still haven't done much Christmas shopping yet!

MarchingFrogs · 07/12/2019 07:27

'Only having to pay for accommodation for the very short term time' is often put forward as one of the extra advantages of Oxbridge over other universities.

Just think of the students who have no-one able or available to come and help them move in and out of their rooms every term.

When I moved to London to start my nurse training (pre 'all graduate profession' days), I sent a trunk on ahead via rail and on the day, just took a medium-sized suitcase. Our first accommodation move was from one nurses' home to another, so I think stuff was taken for us, but how said trunk subsequently found its way from there to my first flat share and onwards, my mind is a complete blankGrin.

Witchend · 07/12/2019 07:41

Whereas I didn't realise some students were able to leave stuff in their rooms!
It was a nice surprise when dd told me she could.

Actually it wasn't so bad. I had a trunk, and a hold all to stay and a rucksack to take home.
In the year I was furthest from the storage room I made a fur cover for the trunk and left it (with scout's knowledge) in the room over the holiday. It just looked like a seat.
