Previous thread - Obvs the end of term is looming sooner for some than for others? I guess the Oxbridge posse will finish by the end of November or just into December?

I would definitely go by train to Lincoln

Piggywaspushed · 01/12/2019 09:09

Trouble wit train is getting to and parking at station our end.

Northernlurker · 01/12/2019 10:08

The Christmas market in York is horrific. We avoid it except early in morning, last thing in the afternoon. Lots of people come by train or coach though so I don't recall it impacting too much on the traffic. If coming to York don't get off the 64 at the fulford/a19 exit as that's a bit of a bottleneck with the designer outlet and skating rink but otherwise ok. Lincoln traffic is terrible. My parents live fairly nearby and have horrendous stories.

Dd is getting on fine. Absolutely no teaching for the last week as the whole department has been on strike. One of her friends has gone home and isn't coming back this term. She was going home to see family and it's a long way to go and return for one seminar.

Dd is planning to use the student union standard email to request some compensation for the lost time. I'm just glad we aren't paying York rates for accommodation for absolutely no purpose this week. She's getting on fine with the essay she needs to write and also her knitting is doing well......

She went in the CU weekend away last week and had a great time and also really enjoyed their carol service this week so that was nice.

Benjispruce · 01/12/2019 10:18

Oh I emailed the strike action contact person at Durham and got a reply to say that tuition fees are not directly related to contact time but are for the whole university experience. He added that the university will not benefit from the unpaid salaries of staff. Not impressed.

Ginfordinner · 01/12/2019 10:19

We went to the York one on a week day three years ago. I parked at the P & R at Askham and took the bus. We whizzed past all the queuing traffic as we were in a bus lane. It was the best way to get into York.

bigTillyMint · 01/12/2019 10:52

@Benjispruce, DD got into a lengthy email exchange with her head of department last time.... ultimately nobody cares that the students have lost teaching time that they have paid for.

bigTillyMint · 01/12/2019 13:36

Well latest from DS is that his wisdom teeth are coming through Grin He got his adult teeth in reception, so I'm not surprised they are early!

Benjispruce · 01/12/2019 15:37

Grin @bigTillyMint

simbobs · 01/12/2019 19:43

@bigTillyMint, I've never heard of adult teeth coming in at such a young age! DS is doing Business & Marketing. I decided to be upfront about having seen that he had an email from Student Services so thet I could be sure that he would read it. Mortified to learn that they are assuming that he has withdrawn from his course! Not only has he missed a week, but he has confessed that he doesn't always manage to scan himself into his lectures so they are unaware that he has been attending. Apparently the lecturers put up a QR code briefly at the beginning of the lecture. If his phone is out of charge, or he doesn't scan in before the code disappears they don't know he's there. He knows that he is, so did't think it was such a big deal. Words fail me sometimes - well, actually they don't, but I am trying to keep my stress level down.

bigTillyMint · 01/12/2019 19:51

Is he just bad at charging his phone or is it draining fast? Could he take a charged power bank?

I am glad I can't see DSs emails Hmm

Ginfordinner · 01/12/2019 20:29

It's important that he scans himself in because it impacts on his student finance for next year. DD just uses her lanyard pass.

ZandathePanda · 01/12/2019 20:34

Dd2 has just got her last adult teeth in year 11 (not wisdom teeth)! She got her first baby tooth at 15months after she was walking.

DD1s wisdom teeth (2 of them) decided to get infected the week before her A Levels. At least the antibiotics killed off a toe infection for a while. And then there was the anti-inflammatories for her injured writing hand...

She has now got another cold again but at least got the flu jab between colds.

Benjispruce · 01/12/2019 21:20

Why would scanning in have anything to do with student finance? DD has missed lots of early lectures but watches them online.

simbobs · 01/12/2019 21:31

DS not bad at charging his phone. The battery seems to be faulty, and shows charge, then just drops out. Can't afford to replace it at the moment.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/12/2019 21:53

At DD's uni and others in this town, students were very much involved in strike actions, special teaching sessions etc. as it is their future, too.

But then there are no fees.

Ginfordinner · 01/12/2019 22:02

Some universities monitor attendance closely and will withdraw anyone who falls below a certain threshold. If this happens then finance is withdrawn.

ZandathePanda · 02/12/2019 09:27

simbobs If you mean the phone is not charging correctly, I would tell your Ds to get the hoover nozzle on to the charging port. It could be that a build up of grot could be preventing a proper connection. If he can, shine a light into the port to see. I used a cocktail stick, very gently, to prise a clump of dust off my phone which was doing the same thing. It’s fine now. I got the tip from someone else on mumsnet so I will pass it on! (Of course I have a secondhand phone from my kids so I blame the grot on them).

Piggywaspushed · 02/12/2019 10:27

This is a big problem with my DS's phone. In the end he took it to a dodgy High Street phone shop and they fixed it for a tenner.

justasking111 · 02/12/2019 13:27

Just reading about the students who died in London during the terrorist attack. I really am not sure students with their lack of life experience are the right fit for rehabilitating dangerous prisoners. I understand their aims but not sure the programme is suitable for all.

simbobs · 02/12/2019 13:28

Thanks, I will get him to take a look. He seems to think that it is the battery that is at fault, as it shows itself charging and then after a good deal of time has very low charge. When it reaches 20% it goes dead. I know charging ports can be replaced as we did this for DD's phone a couple of years ago.

VanCleefArpels · 02/12/2019 13:53

justasking but they were not students - they had both done MPhil at Cambridge and carried on their association with the Learning Together programme after they graduated. The aim of the programme was not to rehabilitate offenders per se but formed part of the whole rehabilitation process which includes education

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-50623646

My daughter is studying criminology at a Different university and will have the opportunity to take part in similar education programmes with offenders. It’s a great scheme in my view

Piggywaspushed · 02/12/2019 14:07

It is a great programme and the events that unfolded so truly awful. It just feels like so the wrong people to target. That sounds crass; there are no right people but they did not deserve any anger vented on them. they were just sitting ducks.

They are on my local news all the time and it is so terribly sad.

Piggywaspushed · 02/12/2019 14:08

In fact, Jack Merritt was programme leader.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/12/2019 19:03

DD's accommodation for next year has been applied for and she has accepted the offered room. She wanted ensuite self catering again and, coincidentally, that's the only room type she was offered in her college area when she went online to apply. She's very happy, as are we. She very much wanted to stay on campus and, luckily, it was an option at York. And, as she has made her mind up so early, there were a few choices available for her. She is mostly happy that she will have all insurance/bills/broadband etc paid for her as well as being on the doorstep again for her college and the library. I'm happy, as she's not the most sociable girl, but having the shared kitchen has meant she has made a good group of friends. And she's relieved it's all sorted now - and making a list of the things we will do differently next year on the moving in days. :)

Now to see if there are decently priced, safe storage companies to save bringing absolutely everything home at the end of the year.

Benjispruce · 02/12/2019 19:34

That’s good @Dr will other 2nd years be with her or will she be with Freshers?
